The Beamer Page 2 A message from Rena Torah Question Of The Week Education Director and Service Leader Perhaps you ve seen the results of a recent survey by the Pew Research Center s Forum on Religion and Public Live. The Center surveyed a random selection of respondents across the country and concluded that Atheists, Agnostics and Jews have the most religious knowledge. On average, they correctly answer seven out of nine questions about religious knowledge, while other groups answer only five correctly. So what do atheists, agnostics, and Jews have in common? They come by their beliefs through intense searching and questioning, and in the process they educate themselves about religious stories, practices and beliefs. As a young student, I was daily exhorted by my teachers to find the questions, more than to learn the facts. What is difficult about this passage? they would say. In B reishit we read: God said, Let there be light, and there was light.. and God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day. Then we read: God made the two great lights, the greater light to dominate the day and the lesser light to dominate the night And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. What s difficult? they d ask again, coaxing us to ask, If the sun and moon were created on the fourth day, what was the light on the first day? And what, they d continue, is difficult about this passage: The woman replied to the serpent, God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree or touch it, lest you die? We were taught to have questioning minds, and that the questions and the act of searching for answers were more important than the actual answers. In fact, the questioning and the searching were the central facets of our religious education. In the spirit of that tradition, Congregation Ner Tamid is bringing a new segment to our Shabbat services, our Torah Question of the Week. The establishment of this segment is inspired by Jake Durshimer s request to dedicate time to exploration of the weekly Torah passages. All of you can participate, no matter what your previous knowledge of the Torah segments may be. Here is how it will go: Before each Shabbat service, I ll all of you the week s Torah CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 Join our interactive Shabbat service discussion on the week s Torah portion Here is the reading for our Shabbat service on October 22 nd : The book of Genesis, the section called Va yera (Genesis 18:1-22:24). Va yera is packed full of stories you will enjoy. First God visits Abraham who is recovering from his circumcision. Angels bring the good news that Sarah will have a child. God announces his intention to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham bargains to save the cities. Lot and his wife are saved from the destruction, Sarah is claimed by King Abimelech who thinks she is Abraham s sister, and Hagar and Ismael are sent into the wilderness. Isaac is born, grows up, and is brought to be sacrificed by his father. Here is the question we will be discussing: Is Abraham an admirable figure of good character? Next Torah discussion: November 5 th The book of Genesis, the section called Va yetzei (Genesis 28:10-32:3). In Va yetzei, Jacob dreams of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven. He marries Leah, then Rachel, and works for his father-in-law for 20 years, after which he leaves with 11 children, four wives, and his flocks. Here are the questions we will be discussing: In this Torah portion, people didn t just sit around and wait for God to do things for them; they made deals, they manipulated each other and the natural world to accomplish their goals. How does Leah manipulate Jacob? How does Jacob manipulate Laban? How does Rachel manipulate Leah and her father? To find the Torah online, go to then, on the top, click on "English Bible" then, on the line that starts with "Torah," click on Genesis.

The Beamer Page 3 From the Rabbi by Rabbi Barbara Aiello Rabbinic advisor, Congregation Ner Tamid Preparing for Thanksgiving 2010 Before you know it America s favorite holiday will be upon us. Thanksgiving Day this year falls on Novemer 25 and less than one week later we move from turkey to latkes as we light the first Chanukah candle on Wednesday, December 1. Oy vey, with so much to do, does it make any sense right now to remind ourselves of a teaching in the Talmud which, when you first hear it, sounds nearly impossible. "Every person should recite a hundred blessings every day!" Could that be right? Is that what our sages really meant? That one hundred times a day we are supposed to stop whatever we are doing and give thanks to God? That one hundred times a day we are supposed to identify the blessings in our lives and give thanks for them? Is this possible? Do-able? Are there one hundred things that we can find each and every day to be thankful for? What if it's a gray day? Or a dull day? Or a painful or a terrible day? What if nothing, absolutely nothing is going our way? Can we still think of a hundred good things? Our traditions say that we can. And if we were traditionally observant Jews, the traditions would do the job for us. You would say the Amidah three times a day which gives you 57 blessings right there. And if you said the Birchat HaMazon, the blessing after meals, you'd have 12 more. And if you made the HaMotzi over the bread, then add 3 more. Wait! If you wash your hands before making motzi" then you'd get 3 right there. Moving along, if you said the rest of the prayers in the Siddur -- the ones for the daily services of Shachrit, Minchah and Ma ariv, you'd be at 100 plus and you'd be over top! But for the most part, we don't pray this way. And there is a movement among rabbis of all Jewish denominations NOT to pray that way. For modern Jews we ve learned not to recite prayers a mile a minute, just to get them done. Instead we ve been taught to pray with focus, with what we call kavanah, to think about what we are saying and why we re saying it. Modern Jewish practice asks that we slow down, meditate and be reflective while we pray. I happen to agree. Kavanah is better than rote recitation. And if you agree with me, then we are faced with a dilemma. How do we find one hundred occasions to thank God and how do we do it every day? My colleague Danny Siegel comes to the rescue. Danny is a lecturer, author and poet and he's written so many books on making our religion relevant to modern life that he is sometimes called "The Pied Piper of Mitzvot and Tzedakah!" Danny Siegel wrote a wonderful book called "Healing." The book is filled with prayers and meditations that people can say in private or together, whether in times of joy and in times of trouble. In this book Danny shares two lists of one hundred things to be thankful for. Here are my favorites from his lists and a few of my own, as well: The sun, the rain, lungs, our hands, our hearts, a sleeping child, jackets, shoes, clothes that keep us warm, clothes that keep us warm and let us look good, too! Today, tomorrow and its possibilities, Torah, touch, birds, Tzedakah boxes, relief -- even if it's for only a minute, the smell of cut grass, Challah. Wisdom -- my own or any shared with me, being able to fix something (after hours of trying), fingers, the dawn... Noon, sunset, laughter, health, even if it's partial health, tears, tears shared with a friend, teddy bears, words in Hebrew or in English, words that we use in prayer, seeing and hearing even if they're not perfect, knowing someone who has a heart of gold, puppies, fun, sleep, Shabbat candles. Curiosity, the good that money can do, hibiscus in bloom, bifocals, passion. Louie Armstrong singing "It's a wonderful world." Noshing, memories, memory, presents wrapped in pretty paper with a bow on top, having something to live for. Baby buggies, our souls, surprises, balloons, jugglers, people who come to visit when we're sick. A good night kiss, nice finger nails, time, photographs, hearing the word "benign, soft things, pizza, the chance to sing the Sheyhechianu. People we admire, people we love, people who love us, stars, waking up in the morning, waking up to start over, especially after a defeat. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

The Beamer Page 4 Teens hold car wash to benefit JFCS school-related program Above, Ner Tamid teen Vajra Morano is surrounded by supplies purchased with money earned from the Carwash for Backpacks. At right, from left to right: Daz Cascio, Matt Cuffaro, Dillon Gates, Briana Lass, Brendan Leverenz, Vajra Morano (not pictured: Ethan Windham) at the car wash. When Jewish Family and Children s Services (JFCS) sent out a call for school supplies for its Homelessness Prevention Program, Congregation Ner Tamid rallied to help. At its Sixth Birthday Party on August 6th, backpacks, calculators, notebooks, lunchboxes, etc., were piled high. But that wasn't enough for Ner Tamid teen Vajra Morano and his friends from Southeast and Manatee High schools in Bradenton. The teens organized a Carwash for Backpacks on August 14th. After a morning of scrubbing, polishing and splashing, the teens raised money to buy ten more backpacks and a variety of other supplies. The teens will receive community service hours at their schools for their participation, but as one said to a curious bystander, "That's not why we are doing this. Sometimes we don't think about how lucky we are to have everything we need. This is a good way to help other kids who aren't as lucky as we are." Blanket drive under way In keeping with our long standing tradition of cooperation with the Stillpoint House of Prayer, we are once again asking for donations of blankets for Manatee County s migrant families. Please bring your donations with you when you come to school or services at Lakeside South, or contact Ner Tamid at for drop off information. Project MOT Chanukah Cards, puzzles for Jewish Troops Too early to think about Chanukah? It seems like it is. But in order to get cards ready to send to our Jewish troops who are serving in harm s way by the holiday season, we have to ship them out by October 22 nd. So look through your stationery and find those cards you didn t send last year, or go out and buy a packet now, and write a Chanukah message to our fine young men and women in the military. Remember the excitement of going to the mailbox and returning to the house with a fistful of cards that you couldn t wait to open? Share that excitement by bringing (or sending) your cards to our next Shabbat service on October 22 nd. We are also collecting crossword puzzles, word jumbles, and Sudoko (with the answers). 5 The Beamer Page 5 Jewish Living and Learning Hebrew School off to a great start Shalom! Apples and honey and bees! That was the theme of our first day of Sunday school. We had all kinds of fun activities for the first day and also for the Jewish New Year. It was fun to learn colors by tossing a bean bag onto different colored apple shapes (Avery won the prize). We played Apples to Apples, the Jewish version (it ll be fun at the Chanukah party later this year), we ate some of Morah Esta s homemade apple cake and we learned the blessings for apples and honey. Morah Rena taught us about similes and we wrote some on bee cutouts, spelling out Shanah Tovah. We all went to Dylan s Bar Mitzvah, to cheer him on and to see what we are going to be doing soon. He was great, but we re sure going to miss him on Sundays. Here are some of our similes: Bee Shape Similes S-H-A-N-A-H T-O-V-A-H Strong as an ant (Ashley) Hot as a desert (Peter) Awful as a burn (Avery) Noisy as cities (Peter) Amazing as a rainbow (Maddie) CNT Sunday school started with a flurry of holiday activity as Cassidy Jones, Ashley Manovich, Avery Manovich, Rose Semonick, Raine Stryczny, and Maddie Hazuda got to work making flags for their Simchat Torah service. High as the Empire State Building (Maddie) Tough as a wrestler (Raine) Enormous as an Olive (Raine) Ugly as a Vulture (Cassidy) Annoying as my brother (Rose) Hideous as a zit (Cassidy) L hitraot, See you next time! Simchat Torah: Rejoicing of the Torah at CNT a very sweet celebration Simchat = Happiness Simchat Torah = Happiness (or Rejoicing) of the Torah In our daily prayers we thank God for the gift of the Torah, and we celebrate it with weekly readings in the never ending cycle of study and devotion. On Simchat Torah we come to the end of the yearly cycle of Torah reading, as, at the end of D varim (Deuteronomy) we hear about the death of Moses, who was destined to see the Promised Land, but not to enter into it, and about the reins of leadership transferred to Joshua s capable hands. We rise to our feet and chant: Chazak Chazak v Nitchazeik Be Strong, Be Strong and be Strengthened. And then immediately we return to the very beginning, the story of Creation in the book of B reishit (Genesis). Ner Tamid celebrated Simchat Torah on October 8 th, with a special Children s Aliyah. All of the children were called up to the Torah and, standing beneath an outstretched tallit, they chanted the blessings for the reading of the Torah. Then, so that their study of Torah will be sweet, each child was presented with treats. A special yasher koach to Jake Durshimer for being a service coleader, Max Hazuda for being our Hagbah (Torah Carrier) and Ba al Yad (Torah pointer); to Mia Stryczny and Susan Skovronek for reading the Torah portions in English; to Rena Morano, our Baalat K riyah (Torah Reader); and to Morah Esta for helping the children make the Simchat Torah flags that were proudly carried during the Hakafah (Torah procession).

The Beamer Page 6 Richard Goldstein Memorial Scholarship Fund Started by Judy Goldstein in memory of her husband Richard, this fund is for the purpose of providing scholarships for children for Hebrew school, Bar or Bat Mitzvah preparation, or for summer camp. If you would like to contribute to this fund, send your donation to Congregation Ner Tamid, earmarked the Richard Goldstein Memorial Scholarship Fund. Your generous donations made Hebrew school possible for several young students this year. Adult B nai Mitzvah Why do people choose to have an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah? For some, it is the opportunity to celebrate a life cycle event that may have been missed in their teen years. For some, it is the fulfillment of the desire to affirm to the congregation their adult commitment to Judaism, family, and Jewish culture. For others, it is the wish to rededicate themselves by remembering as an adult the Torah study and prayers they did at their youthful Bar or Bat Mitzvah. For information on Adult B nai Mitzvah preparation and celebration, call Rena at Dylan Jones holds the Torah scroll as he is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Ner Tamid. Dylan's Bar Mitzvah ceremony, attended by family and friends, also included participation by his fellow CNT Sunday school students. Announcements WANTED: CAMERA AND PHOTOGRAPHER Congregation Ner Tamid is seeking donations toward the purchase of a digital camera to document all of our happenings. We also need a photographer to help capture those special moments. For more information, call MAH JONGG ANYONE? If you are interested in playing Mah Jongg, please call Elaine at or Adele Kaplan at NEW SOCIAL GROUP Interested in getting together with your CNT family? A new social group has been formed. The group enjoyed its first lunch at the Olympic Cafe on Manatee Avenue. The next get together will be Saturday, December 11th at 12:30 p.m. At the Riverhouse Reef and Grill, 995 Riverside Drive, Palmetto. RSVP to Adele Kaplan at FILING CABINET NEEDED If you have a filing cabinet, legal sized, that you no longer need, or know someone with one that they are willing to donate to CNT, please contact Rena at RSVP PLEASE Please help us continue to make CNT s events the successes they have been. Your RSVP s are important in order for us to accurately order food and supplies. And please honor those reservations and your financial obligations when you are unable to attend due to a last minute illness or other situation. ROOM RENTALWe are fortunate to have the Lakeside South Clubhouse available to us for our services and programs. We do have to pay a nominal rental fee for our use of the facility, so please come prepared to contribute $2 per adult (age 13 and older) to cover this cost each time you attend services. As you know, our membership fees are negligible, and we do not have a budget to cover room rental. Our congregation depends on you to help us maintain our arrangement with Lakeside South. So, please leave your $2 in the basket by the door. NOTARY SERVICES In addition to witnessing signatures, Florida notaries can also officiate at weddings, both civil and religious. If you need a Notary Public, please call Rena at

Was there something on the list that touched a chord? If so, then we can acknowledge that indeed we walk amidst wonders, and that, even in the midst of our troubles, there is so much to be thankful for. Take a moment now and finish the list. What are the wonders in your life that make your heart sing? What makes you grateful? What are the miracles and blessings that we get every single day that, because they are daily, regular things, they are so easily taken for granted. It s almost Thanksgiving Day and right after that we re searching for our Chanukah menorah and rushing out to buy candles. Yet before we find ourselves caught up in seasonal preparations, we can take a moment, either around the Thanksgiving table or in the glow of the Chanukah lights and say aloud those things we re really grateful for. Tell everyone you know just what things warm your heart. All the way back to the Talmud, our tradition require us to be grateful. Every worship service begins with Jewish prayers that include words of thanks. As we approach our own American holiday of thankfulness, we have the chance to infuse the Jewish spirit into our celebration. Make a group gratitude list, so that Thanksgiving will be a real Yontif. Why? Because it s the Jewish thing to do. Rabbi Barbara Aiello is the rabbinic advisor to Congregation Ner Tamid. She is resident rabbi of the Kobernick House/Anchin Pavilion in Sarasota. 8 The Beamer Page 8 Highlights from 2010 High Holidays 2011 High Holidays: Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown Sept. 28 Yom Kippur begins at sundown Oct. 7th The High Holy Days began with a blast, literally, as Ba'al Tekiah Vajra Morano, bottom right, sounded the giant antelope shofar at Congregation Ner Tamid Selichot services. The Selichot service offers an opportunity for reflection and meditation in preparation for the High Holy Day season The Congregation continued its High Holy Days observance with its traditional Rosh Hashanah service. Ba'al Tekiah Vajra Morano prepares to sound the shofar as Max Hazuda holds the Torah scroll, arrayed in its white holy day mantle, at far left. At bottom left, fish crackers complemented the symbolism as congregation members and students alike used them to "cast their sins away," during the traditional Tashlich ceremony. Pictured are Rose Semonick, Janet Hazuda, Peterr Semonick, Cassidy Jones and Maddie Hazuda. At top right, the plaintive Kol Nidre chant, sung by Cantor Joel J. Reznick touched the hearts of members and friends who filled the sanctuary to capacity for the first of three Yom Kippur services, which included the traditional break the fast. Thank you to all of the congregants and guests who participated in our High Holiday services. As always, it is your willingness to join in that makes our congregation a success, not just at the High Holidays, but all year long!

The Beamer Page 9 Consider making a Legacy Gift to Congregation Ner Tamid What is a Legacy Gift? A legacy gift is a way to assure that institutions and organizations that you believe in, that you dedicated your time and efforts to, will continue to thrive. A legacy gift to Ner Tamid means that your memory will be forever for a blessing to the little congregation that will forever appreciate your support. How do I make a legacy gift? Talk with your financial advisor. She/he will guide you as to how to include Ner Tamid by name in your will. Can my gift be specific? Yes, your legacy gift can be earmarked to support Ner Tamid's educational programs, rabbinical efforts or special events that will occur on a regular basis in your name. I'd love to do this but I can't make a big endowment. A legacy gift can be any amount that you choose and for any purpose that you choose. No amount is too small and each gift will be much appreciated as Ner Tamid continues to serve the Jewish community in your honor and memory. Thank you! A great big thank you to Bernie Teiger, Elaine Mittler s brother who give the congregation a sterling silver yad in honor of his wonderful experience celebration the High Holidays with CNT.
