Te tragedy in Pittsburg is still fres in our minds and leads our focus toward te rising tide of anti-semitism and te overall security for te Jewis people not only in Israel, but now in America too. Te oliday of Tu B Svat, wic is on January 21 tis year, is a reminder of our obligation to be partners wit God in making sure tat te world trives for many years to come. 4 From Micael Wolf Director of Spirituality and Outreac Parasat Yitro includes te Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-15), arguably te most famous section of te entire Tanak. Tradition teaces tat at te moment God revealed te commandments to Mose, te entire world was silent and still. Te first word God utters is Anoki, I and it begins wit te silent letter alef. It may seem strange tat God begins te most important part of te Tora wit silence. But it is te silence of te initial alef tat forces us to listen closely to God s words. One of te most beautiful aspects of our tradition s understanding of te revelation at Sinai is tat it was not limited only to tose present. Every one of us stands at Sinai wen we study Tora and wen we live Tora. If te revelation were for te select few tat were actually pysically present at te base of Mt. Sinai, Judaism would ave died out a long time ago. Because te possibility to experience revelation as never ceased our religious tradition as endured. It is tis ongoing revelation tat as granted te Jewis people an eternal future. Week by week, parasa by parasa, we read troug te entire Tora over te course of a year. And ten, wen we finis, wat do we do? We start te process all over again. Wat a curious custom. Wy do we boter to read te same words every year? At some point don t we know wat te Tora says? Wat we realize, of course, is tat te words of te Tora do not cange. We do. Our experiences sape our lives and our understanding. Every time we learn someting new and every time we ave some new insigt, we are experiencing revelation. A new perspective and new understanding is te result of our personal experience of God s revelation. Seuda Selisit January 12 between Minca and Maariv. As te sky stays ligter...starting on Monday, February 4, we will be switcing te evening minyan back to 6:00 P.M. Morning remains at 7:30 A.M. during te weekdays and 8:30 A.M. on Sundays. Hope to see you! Tank You to te Friends of te IDF Tis past February we ad te wonderful experience of going to Israel wit a terrific group from Adat Salom Synagogue led by Rabbi Aaron and Rut Bergman. It was a fantastic trip wic I igly recommend for anyone wo as traveled to Israel or as never ad te opportunity. Tere is truly noting like it. Among te many igligts, one tat stands out above all was our opportunity to visit te IDF 75t Battalion of te Armored Brigade base near te Lebanon border, arranged by te Friends of te IDF Micigan Capter. We spent an afternoon wit te very talented young men and women wo put teir lives at risk daily defending te State of Israel, and we were able to acieve a better understanding of te many dangers and callenges tey face. We ad te opportunity of visiting wit soldiers and learning muc about teir daily lives on te base and were afforded time for Q&A wit army officers and soldiers. Afterward we were sown te latest and greatest tecnology in teir tanks and maneuvers and a special rare opportunity of seeing teir doctors and medics in an actual medical emergency exercise! We would like to tank te IDF for teir ospitality and for everyting tey do and are pleased to make possible a gift of $3,000 to te Friends of te IDF for te construction of a muc needed mobile leisure corner, a place for te soldiers to take a break from teir everyday surroundings, relax and recarge teir batteries during teir down time on te base. Te conditions on te base are sparse, to say te least, and tis will provide tem wit a place tey can feel at ome and just cill in a comfortable casual setting to take teir minds off of te everyday dangers tey face. Kol Hakavod to te IDF, te Friends of te IDF, and a special tanks to Rabbi Aaron and Rut Bergman and everyone in our group for teir contribution in making tis project a reality. However, wat people rarely remember is tat approximately 15,000 were safely evacuated from te towers. Wile te man was clearly devastated tat is wife wasn t among tose wo survived, e said tat wat as kept im going in te interim seventeen years is focusing on te brave individuals wo risked and sometimes lost teir lives in order to save te lives of oters. He focuses on te fact tat if te attacks ad appened later in te day, te towers would ave ad tousands more people in tem. Eac day e cooses to focus on uman dignity rater tan uman depravity. He cooses to onor is wife s legacy by creating a world were ligt eclipses darkness and love stamps out ate. Te word Canuka means dedication culminating our trip on te first nigt of Canuka, te group dedicated ourselves to doing te same. HAZZAN GROSS (continued from page 3) Tis is often te case wit te Bar/Bat Mitzva preparation process. Learning and applying trope to te ancient words of our tradition often seem irrelevant to B nai Mitzva students in tis day and age. However, wen te big day as arrived and it s time to cant from te bima in front of family, friends and te congregation, te inevitable emotions of accomplisment and pride our B nai Mitzva students feel are evident and visible on teir faces. Seeing my son prepare for is Bar Mitzva as been very special. It was 29 years ago, immediately after my Bar Mitzva service, tat Rabbi Epraim Zimand (z l) said to me, You know, Daniel, you are very good at tis and ave a gift for canting. I d love to see you do it again in te future. It was wit pride, years later, tat I was able to inform Rabbi Zimand of my decision to pursue te cantorate, and prouder still to ave te opportunity to pass on te tradition of canting trope to my firstborn son and countless oters. Please join Lauren and me as we celebrate our son s Bar Mitzva on Sabbat morning, February 2, 2019.
