3 MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENT, KEN GOSS HARD TO SAY GOODBYE As I begin te task of writing my final Voice article as President, I recall many memories of tese past two years. I apologize in advance if tis last article is a bit selfcentered. Words can not describe te sense of pride and satisfaction I feel aving served te sul. Adat Salom is a ome, and te people are like family. Working wit our clergy wo are warm, caring, engaging and compassionate as been an onor. I ope I ave offered tem as muc support and guidance as tey ave given me. Te administration ere manages te budget and facility to suc a ig level, we all can be proud. Our professional staff s dedication to te synagogue is an inspiration. Tey constantly go above and beyond during teir days ere at work. To tem, tis is teir ouse and teir family. It would be ard to find a scool were cildren feel more welcomed and inspired. Te education and yout staff work ard to instill yiddiskeit in our cildren. Our custodial personnel always want te facility to be in presentable condition. Working wit our Executive Committee as been a pleasure. Tese eigt people give so muc of teir time, sacrificing bot family and work to keep us moving forward. Te Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated and involved congregants wose input is always valued. Being president of a sul offers a unique sense of satisfaction as we touc peoples earts and souls. Programs reac all ages Continued on page 7 FROM HAZZAN DANIEL GROSS SHAVUOT: A HOLIDAY FLOWING WITH BLINTZES AND CHEESECAKE Every major Jewis oliday is associated wit food. For Ros Hasana apples and oney; Yom Kippur no food at all; Sukkot etrog; Canuka latkes and sufganiyot; Purim amentasen; Passover matza. For Savuot, it is dairy. Tere are a variety of explanations as to wy we eat dairy foods on Savuot wic celebrates te receiving of te Tora wen Moses came down from Mt. Sinai. One explanation as to do wit kasrut. During te revelation at Mt. Sinai, te Israelites learned te laws of kasrut, wic includes te proper way to slaugter animals and te proibition against consuming blood. After leaving Mt. Sinai, tey returned to teir camps only to realize tat neiter teir meat nor cooking vessels were koser. Tey ad no coice but to eat a dairy meal! Anoter explanation comes from a medieval collection of Jewis ritual and civil laws called Kol Bo. Here it claims tat te prase oney and milk under your tongue from Song of Songs is an allusion to te Tora, wic is sweet and nourising for our spirits. Some people ave te custom of eating two blintzes, wic symbolize te two tablets containing te Ten Commandments. A tird explanation for eating dairy comes from gematria (numerical value). Te numerical value of te Hebrew word for milk, calav, is 40, a number wic figures prominently in te story of receiving te Tora. Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai receiving instruction in te entire Tora, 40 days praying for forgiveness for te Golden Calf, and 40 more days on Mt. Sinai before returning wit te new unbroken set of stone tablets. Continued on page 7 FROM RABBI AARON BERGMAN WHICH FUTURE WILL WE GIVE ISRAEL? David Ben-Gurion declared Israel's independence on May 14t, It was te first time tat tere was a Jewis state in two tousand years. We as a people ad been in exile since te destruction of Jerusalem and te Second Temple by te Romans. We never stopped dreaming of a return to our omeland. We never lost ope. We never forgot wo we were. We came back and built our land again. We are living te dream of our ancestors. For seventy years, Israel as been strong and independent, growing better every year. It as been te fulfillment of te Prayer for Israel tat we sare eac Sabbat morning, in wic we say tat Israel is Reiseet Tzmicat Gaulateinu, te beginning of te flowering of our redemption. I ope wit all my eart tat Israel remains tat way. Let me sare wat keeps me up at nigt. Tere ad been an independent Jewis state for only one undred years between te destruction of te First Temple in 586 BCE by te Babylonians, until Tat was te period of te Maccabees in te Second Century BCE. One undred years out of two tousand six undred. Tat century of independence ended because we as a people fougt eac oter. We could not see te oter's point of view on difficult issues. We lased out instead of listened. We weakened ourselves so muc tat we lost our land for two millennia. We ave serious differences as a people on a large variety of issues today. Arguing is fine. Figting and vilifying eac oter is not. If we forget tat we are a people, we will lose te land again, and tere will be no return in our lifetimes, or tose of our descendants. We ave a coice today. Are we seventy years into anoter one undred year anomaly of istory, or are we truly at te dawn of redemption? It is up to us. FROM RABBI RACHEL SHERE HAPPY BIRTHDAY ISRAEL Wen I am talking to kids about stories in te Tora, tey often ask me, wy aren t tere any miracles today? So many people born after te middle of te twentiet century fail to recognize tat a miracle of biblical proportions as unfolded over te last 70 years. Peraps tat is because for tose of us wo never knew a world witout Israel, er existence is a foregone conclusion. Yet for most of Jewis istory, tis was not te case. In onor of Israel s 70t birtday, ere are some of my favorite tings about our omeland: For nearly two tousand years, Hebrew was only found in oly books and Tora scrolls; it is now te language of business negotiations, rap music, lovers quarrels and street graffiti te only dead language to ever be successfully resurrected. Tzedaka boxes are often posted at bus stations as are signs tat quote Leviticus 19:32, You sall rise before te aged and sow deference to te old. Continued on page 15 3

4 Offering you nourisment for your mind, body & spirit ADULT LEARNING Jodi Gross, Director of Adult Learning From Micael Wolf Director of Spirituality and Outreac Traditionally, many people mark tis time of te year by counting te Omer, a ritual tat involves counting te days and weeks leading up to Savuot. More recently, te custom as developed tat people read one capter of Pirkei Avot on eac of te six Sabbatot between te end of Pesac and Savuot. After te Jews left Egypt, tey embarked on a period of self-refinement and caracter improvement. Tis was critical in order tat tey be worty of receiving te Tora on Savuot. Wile counting te Omer, we, too, try to perfect our caracter. Pirkei Avot is a tractate in te Misna tat is devoted to piety, umility, kindness and etics. Many continue te custom of studying Pirkei Avot trougout te summer monts, until Ros Hasana. I ope you will join us at evening Minyan as we learn Pirkei Avot during our One Minute of Fun! We learn in Capter 4, Misna 17: Rabbi Simon used to say: Tere are tree crowns te crown of te Tora, te crown of te priestood, and te crown of kingsip, but te crown of a good name surpasses tem all. Te Hebrew word for soul is nesama. Central to tat word, te middle two letters, sin and mem, make te word sem, Hebrew for name. Your name is te key to your soul. In Gematria (eac Hebrew letter as a numerical equivalent), Sem equals 340 wic is te same numerical value as te word for book, sefer. Names are a book. Tey tell a story. I would like to know your story or at least your Hebrew name so I can call you up for synagogue onors! MEN S CLUB MUSINGS... BY ALAN CHANDROSS Two years ago, I accepted te role of Men s Club President wit onor, appreciation, and a little trepidation. Te role as always been filled by strong leaders wo took te club from strengt to strengt, adding teir own flavor of leadersip, Judaic values, and integrity to te role and te organization. Stepping into teir soes was not someting I did ligtly. Two years later, I ope tat I ave lived up to te standards set by oters. Wit te support of te Executive Board, te Board of Trustees, and many of our general members, we ave introduced new programs and a new young men s coort. We ave listened to your feedback and added new programming in some areas, and refined existing programming in oters to more closely align wit your interests. And we ave made every effort to be more and more inclusive and to never stop listening. We ave not always succeeded, but I m proud of te progress we ve made. Our success was enabled by significant ard work by te entire club. Our Executive Board worked tirelessly to support me mont after mont, by running programs, supporting communications, and volunteering countless ours during events and planning beind te scenes. Te Board of Trustees, as well, contributed significant effort designing, running, supporting, and filling in were necessary to ensure every program was a success. Many non-board members contributed troug leading, volunteering and, of course, attending our events, to make tem successful. I appreciate every our volunteered, every sent, and every event attended. Your elp made, and continues to make, te club as successful as it is, wit a program slate tat is enviable at a national level, and a membersip roster among te igest in our region. Kol HaKavod to all of you. If I ve been fortunate to ave found success, it is entirely due to you. Finally, I d like to tank te clergy, administration, and maintenance staffs, tat ave selflessly and generously supported our efforts over te past couple of years. You ave brougt us new programs, supported existing ones in a myriad of ways, and peraps most importantly tolerated my mistakes as I slowly crawled up te learning curve. I am ugely grateful for your support, kindness, and flexibility as we planned, executed, and extended our programming. You are te best synagogue partners a club could possibly ope for. Transitions are bittersweet. Altoug I m proud of wat we ve accomplised, I feel we still ave more work to do. Altoug my role will sift, I look forward to continuing to work wit te club and to bringing new and exciting programming to te synagogue. Tank you all for your support, confidence, and feedback troug tese last two years. I am onored to ave filled te role, and grateful to ave ad te opportunity to lead te club. Salom, Alan 6

And lately, Israeli cookbooks are getting to te ead of te foodie list. Recently, te FRIENDS got togeter for an evening tat focused on Israeli cooking popular Separdic dises and a variety of Middle Eastern specialties at te ome of Selly and Eugene Perlman. Rabbi Racel Sere sared er knowledge of food in Jewis tradition. Selly and Carmley Levine bot great cooks in teir own rigt planned te event, wic began wit dinner and continued wit a look at Israelis multicultural romance wit food. Tey agreed to sare tis easy recipe wit VOICE readers: Taini Cookies 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 cup best-quality taini 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder Place butter and sugar in large bowl of a stand mixer. Cream butter and sugar until ligt and fluffy. Beat in te taini. Add flour and baking powder and beat to combine. Let doug stand 1 our. Place rack in center of te oven and preeat to 350 degrees. Form doug into 1 1/2-inc rounds. Arrange rounds uncrowded on baking seets and bake until sligtly brown, about 20 minutes. Let cookies cool for 2-3 minutes on baking seets. Transfer to rack to cool completely. Store in airtigt container. Hazzan Daniel Gross wit our community of cantors Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $37-$45 Berman Center For Te Performing Arts teberman.org/cantors FROM HAZZAN GROSS (continued from page 3) An additional wordplay explanation is found in Psalm 68, wit regard to te revelation of te Tora. It describes te mountain of God (Mt. Sinai) as a mountain of peaks, ar gav nunim. Te Hebrew word for ceese, gevina, as te same root letters. So te mountain was made of ceese a great excuse for ceesecake! A more serious explanation as to do wit self-control and discipline. By limiting ourselves to a dairy meal, we stress te spiritual value of a life guided by moderation and temperance rater tan by te seeming freedom of limitlessness and gluttony. Tis explanation is definitely spiritual and powerful, despite te seeming contradiction of our indulgence in te traditional ceesecake. Peraps one or more of tese explanations will resonate (and opefully digest) wit you. If not, I urge you to come up wit your own rationale for connecting dairy and Savuot. Please join us for our Tikkun Leil Savuot at 8:00pm on May 19 wen we will explore our new Siddur Lev Salem and enjoy some dairy delicacies! FROM KEN GOSS (continued from page 3) EMPTY NESTERS A group from Adat Salom got togeter for a fun-filled nigt of games celebrating te conclusion of Passover. and run te gamut of religious identity. Working to inspire people to find teir comfortable place in te Adat Salom family was not difficult. In my first Hig Holiday speec I mentioned tat my late fater never wanted to be a synagogue president, altoug e eld every oter board position. Today I can certainly tell im tat e missed out on an onor and privilege tat is not easily duplicated. Let me say tank you to everyone for your support and guidance. I especially want to tank Karen wo gives me inspiration and love, and supports me in my volunteering. 7

9 THE LEARNING COMMUNITY y 4 JEWISH FAMILY EDUCATION Family Education programs are endowed in memory of Jeanette & Oscar Cook Savuot is known as te Feast of Weeks. It started as an ancient grain festival and as become a celebration of receiving te Tora. Tere are different customs surrounding Savuot and below are some of tem in a family friendly format. It s traditional to stay up all nigt and study Jewis texts. An allnigter is not realistic for little ones, but consider staying up late and reading PJ Library books togeter, or dressing up and acting out Moses coming down te mountain wit te Ten Commandments. One suggestion is Sylvia A. Rouss s No Rules for Micael - wic can be followed by coming up wit your own ouse rules. We also read te book of Rut on Savuot morning. Some cildfriendly versions of tis text are Rut and Naomi, by Jean Marzollo and Te Story of Rut, by Maxine Rose Scur. We will be reading togeter at PJs and Stories on te second morning of Savuot, before Yizkor services. We begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21 and will be joined by Rabbi Bergman as our guest storyteller. Savuot celebrates te Land of Milk and Honey and we traditionally eat dairy foods on tis oliday. You migt find and make a new dairy recipe togeter wit your cild and ten taste it on Savuot. You migt try ceesecake, blintzes, or even an ice cream sundae bar! Decorating wit flowers is also a custom of Savuot. In Israel, cildren wear flowers in teir air as tey bring baskets of fruits symbolic of te first fruits brougt to te Temple to kindergarten. 10 Wat s New in Teen Education? Trougout tis year, as part of my culminating researc project for te Jewis Teological Seminary, I ave worked on an action researc project in te area of Jewis teen education. I ave learned quite a lot from te teens wo are engaged in our programming. As we move toward developing teen education furter, and given tat one of te top factors in weter teens participate is teir scedules, not weter or not tey find te program interesting, multiple coices for participation are key. If we look at total teen participation, ten out of te 185 teens on our outreac list, 62% are eiter involved in one of our educational programs or attend a local day scool. Teen interest in learning falls into tree main categories: 1) social connectivity; 2) life skills and personal goals; 3) Jewis knowledge and te modern world. Te students wo self-selected to attend our Monday evening program were overwelmingly comfortable in te synagogue setting, noting tat wen tey are present tey feel safe, appy, included, supported, and at ome. Te tings tey love best about coming to class are - equally - seeing [teir] friends and learning new Jewis tings. Students want to know ow to be a Jewis teen/adult. Students expressed teir desire to not only learn about Jewis istory and culture, but also ow to apply it to teir lives. Wen asked wat was difficult about being Jewis, students pointed to anti-semitism or being bullied. Developing from adolescents into adults requires learning to take risks, being more responsible, building academic skills, balancing scool/work and personal demands, and dealing more effectively wit stressors. Teens made a difference during teir involvement in te Teen Volunteer Corps. Tey enriced teir minds during Nos & Dras. Teens explored teir Jewis identity and connections to American Jewis istory during our trip to Piladelpia. Tey were also madricim (teacer assistants) and positive Jewis role models for kids during Hebrew scool. Join us Sunday, May 6 For more information visit: WalkForIsrael.org FROM RABBI SHERE (continued from page 3) Unlike in te U.S., Memorial Day isn t a time for picnics and sales. On Yom Hazikaron in Israel, te radio stations play only sad music and at 11:00 A.M., a two-minute siren blasts and te country comes to a complete standstill. Traffic on te igway stops as people get out of teir cars to remember tose wo ave fallen. In suc a small country, everyone is personally affected. Peraps because of teir familiarity wit tragedy, Israelis are always amongst te first responders to disasters no matter were in te world tey strike, and Israel as opened its borders to more refugees per capita tan any oter nation. Tere is a national teatre troupe composed entirely of blind and deaf actors; Israeli paper currency contains Braille for te vision impaired; and people wit autism are recruited for a selective intelligence squad in te Israeli army were teir differential strengts are considered an asset. Israel was te tird country in te world to ave a female prime minister and te first country in te world to require its fasion models to maintain a ealty weigt. Israel was te only country to enter te 21st century wit more trees tan 100 years prior, and solar powered water eaters are ubiquitous in Israeli omes. I was recently at a conference were Israelis demonstrated a new tecnology tey ave invented to literally create water out of tin air. Minyanim meet nearly everywere at gas stations, by te kibbutz pool, even in bars. Even te least observant Jew knows wen te Jewis olidays are because te year is measured by and ordered around tem. Te work week begins on Sunday because most people, even tose wo aren t religious, take a sort day on Friday to prepare for a nicer family meal on Friday nigt. Most ovens sold in Israel ave a Sabbat setting and observant Israelis can buy discounted car insurance tat doesn t include Friday nigt or Saturday. David Ben-Gurion famously said, In Israel, in order to be a realist, you must believe in miracles. Happy Birtday Israel. A great miracle as appened ere.
