1 Catechist HANDOUT Week 11 12/9/2018 Bible Study 2 SET THE WORLD OBJECTIVES OVERVIEW 1. 4 pm Mass 2. 5:00-5:15pm- Gather in the Narthex 3. 5:15-5:45pm- Large Group (Attendance and short presentation in the Chapel) 4. 5:45-7:00pm- Small Group Lesson Plan This lesson corresponds to Hamm pages 14 to 16. LESSON COMPONENTS A. Opening (15-20 minutes) 1. Covenant Prayer and sharing 2. Community Builder B. Bible Study (40-45 minutes) 1. Reading of the passage 2. Discussion 3. Close with a prayer C. Response to Scripture text (20 minutes) 1. Skit, poem, journaling, art piece, half-page class response in parish Bulletin D. Announcements Today s passage is Acts 1: P a g e
2 Covenant Prayer Review and pray covenant prayer as a class. Discuss the components of the prayer that everyone talked about and if everyone is on track with the covenant. Fun Review This is a video that does a review of the major points of the verses from the last 3 weeks! You can go to or search Children's Ministry Deals Acts 1 1 to 11 Bible Trivia Countdown Video. Community Builder 1. Games Discussion Questions o What are some board games that you liked to play when you were little? Did they involve luck of the draw, taking risks or strategy? o What is your favorite game now? Why? Have the teens play the card game War. You can have two teens play and demonstrate for the class, or you can have each teen play against someone else in the class. o Discuss: Does this game involve luck of the draw, taking risks or strategy? Why would you play a game that s all luck? Do you ever feel that sometimes what people call luck or fate is really God s work? What s a time when you felt like you were lucky, but it was really God? 2. Today, we are reading about what happened when there were only 11 apostles and there was a need for another. What are some things that need everyone or everything? What happens if they re not there? Some examples if you need ideas: Sports team- What if you re missing a whole position? Band- What happens without a flute section? Puzzle- What happens if you re missing a piece? Ikea furniture- What happens if you re missing a chair leg? Book- What happens if you re missing a chapter or a page? Class- What happens if you re missing the teacher? Or a student? Medical team- What happens if you re missing the doctor? 2 P a g e Or a nurse? This video pairs with the video at the end of the lesson! You will need cards if you choose to do this activity! Introduce the concept of the 11 apostles not being a whole team either before you ask for examples. Help them to make the connection between the apostles not being complete and these other things!
3 Bible Study o Acts 1:13-26 Read it through twice, breaking it up by section and switching off readers Discussion questions: o How many apostles were there? Why were there only 11? 3 P a g e Who else was with them? What women do you think were there? Are the brothers Jesus biological brothers? Who are they? Why weren t the women mentioned by name? (they weren t as important) Why was Mary named? (she was an important figure to the new church) How do we dismiss people today? How do we make them feel less important? Have you ever felt less important? How did you feel? o 15 Peter as a leader We know that Peter denied Jesus 3 times. How do you think the others felt about Peter after that? Would he want him to lead them? Read John 21:15-19 to see why the others may have trusted him again. 120 people gathered, 120 brothers gathered, what does this tell you about Jesus brothers? Note: 120 is a multiple of 12. Why is this important? Where else do we see 12 in the Bible? In life? o Book of Genesis states there were 12 sons of Jacob and those 12 sons formed the 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus had 12 apostles. The Book of Revelation, the kingdom of God has 12 gates guarded by 12 angels. o The 12 months of the year and the 12 constellations of the zodiac. o Who was Judas? What did he do before the crucifixion? What did Judas do in this passage? What does Acts say that Judas did with his money? What do the verses that Peter chose to recite from Psalms mean? o What two men does the group propose? Why these two men? How do they choose the new apostle? Who chooses? What does the prayer said before that moment tell us?
4 Who becomes the 12 th? Why him? How did the disciples make their decision? What was the process they went through? How would you choose the new 12 th apostle? What would be the requirements? Who would be in the running? How would you make the choice? o Challenge the teens: Choose women? Choose newcomers? Choose old people? What was the role of Scripture, prayer, discussion, and trust in God when the disciples selected a replacement for Judas? Do you feel like there was any luck in the choice? How was that luck really God s will? What are some choices that you have to make in your life? What are some big choices? (classes to take, instrument to play, team to try out for) What are some smaller choices? (clothes to wear, breakfast to eat) How does this pattern of decision-making compare with the way you make important decisions? Out of the four ingredients (Scripture, prayer, discussion, and trust in God), which do you use the most? Which could you utilize more of? What is the casting of lots? What are ways that we cast lots today? o Drawing straws o Rocks of different colors (like on Survivor) o Rock-Paper-Scissors o Roll dice o Choose a number o Flipping a coin o Randomizer App o Eenie, meenie, miney, mo o Cards parallel back to War if you played earlier o 24- Lord, you who know the hearts of all.. What does this passage mean? Do you think Jesus knows our hearts? If Jesus were to look into your heart right now, what would he see? o Overall How do we choose who represents us today? In government, in class presentations, as sports captains? How does this compare to the way that the disciples chose? Practice casting lots! Have the teens roll dice, choose rocks, draw straws, pick a card, etc. Give teens a point every time they win each type of lot, and give the winner a small prize. 4 P a g e
5 Fun Review This is a video that does a review of the major points of the verses! You can go to hzs7cfpxccfo4ckwf&index=5 or search Children's Ministry Deals Acts 1 12 to 26 Bible Trivia Countdown Video. You can have the teens work individually or in groups! It s a 5 minute video that will get them moving and thinking! You can do this activity before or after (or during!) your discussion questions. Closing Prayer Take some time as a group to reflect on the reading and how it applies in your own personal life. Form this discussion into a prayer. Response to Scripture Text You should spend some time at the end of class coming up with a short presentation. These can be a skit on what we learned, skit reenacting the verse, skit putting the verse in modern times, poem, rap, journaling, art piece, half-page class response in parish Bulletin. It should be something that will take about 5-8 minutes to present to other groups in the chapel. 5 P a g e
