January 19-20th 3.3 Kinder Lesson Plan Jacob s new name Bible Passage: Genesis Story Point: God changed Jacob s name to Israel. Key Passage: I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. Genesis 28:15 (NIV) Big Picture Question: Does God keep His promises? God always keeps His promises. INTRODUCE THE STORY TEACH THE STORY EXPERIENCE THE STORY (15-20 Minutes) (10-15 Minutes) (20-25 Minutes)
The BIBLE Story Jacob s New Name Genesis Jacob took his family and everything he had, and he headed home to Canaan. Jacob was afraid to see his brother Esau again. What if Esau was still angry? Jacob sent messengers ahead to tell Esau that he was coming. The messengers came back. Esau is coming to meet you! they said. He has a big group of people with him! Jacob was very afraid! Was Esau coming to hurt him? Would all those people hurt Jacob and his family? Jacob made a plan to stay safe. He told part of his family to go one way, and the other part to go another way. If Esau fought one group, maybe the other group could get away. Then Jacob prayed. He asked God to keep His promise. Please rescue me from my brother, he prayed. Then Jacob sent gifts to Esau many animals like goats, sheep, camels, cows, bulls, and donkeys. Jacob hoped Esau would be happy with the gifts. Maybe then Esau would forgive him. That night, a man appeared to Jacob. (The man was God!) The man wrestled with Jacob all night. Jacob would not give up, so the man hurt Jacob s hip. Let Me go. The sun is coming up, the man said. But Jacob did not let Him go. I will not let You go unless You bless me, Jacob said. Your name was Jacob, said the man, but now your name will be Israel. You wrestled with God and with men, and you have won. The man blessed Jacob. The sun came up, and Jacob limped because his hip was hurt. Now Jacob saw Esau and the big group of people coming toward him. Jacob went to meet Esau. He bowed down to show respect. Esau ran to Jacob and hugged him. Esau was not angry anymore! Esau went back to his home, and Jacob traveled a little farther. Jacob bought land for his family to live on. He was finally home in the land God had promised to give him. Christ Connection: God changed Jacob s life and gave him a new name, Israel. By dying and rising from the dead, Jesus made the way for us to be adopted into God s family. When we are adopted into God s family, we get a new name, too children of God. (John 1:12) 2
INTRODUCE the Story WELCOME TIME: Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Have one leader stand by the door with the clipboard to greet children by name and welcome their parents as they arrive. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group.. Prompt kids to talk about any nicknames they have. How did they get their nickname? Is it a shortened version of their normal name? Is it because of something they said or did? Say People will often use nicknames to refer to their friends and family members. Nicknames can also be a way to show a difference between two people with the same name. In our story today, we will hear about a time God changed Jacob s name. Why do you think God would change Jacob s name? ACTIVITY PAGE Guide children to use the key to find and circle Jacob and Esau in the crowd. SAY Do you remember when we heard the story of how Jacob stole his brother Esau s blessing? Esau was so angry, he wanted to hurt Jacob; so Jacob went to his uncle Laban s. Jacob had been gone for many years. Now God told him to go home. Jacob was afraid to see his brother again. Let s find out what happened when they saw each other. ACTIVITY: Thumb wrestling Show the kids how to thumb wrestle. While facing one another, each competitor should hold her thumb straight up and grasp her opponent s fingertips with her own fingertips. After a brief countdown each player will try to hold down the opponent s thumb with her own thumb. Form pairs of kids and encourage them to play three thumb wrestling matches. The first kid in each pair to win two matches moves on to play a winner from another pair. Continue matches until one kid wins overall. SAY Thumb wrestling is fun, and quite a bit safer than real wrestling. Today we will learn about a time Jacob wrestled with a mysterious stranger. Jacob demanded that the stranger bless him. Who do you think the stranger could have been? WORSHIP: While the children finish playing or coloring, get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. SAY It s large group time! Come sit on the rug with us! We re going to sing some fun songs together that worship God! Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) 3
TEACH the Story TRANSITION TO THE STORY: To gain the attention of all the kids to move them to Bible study, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Place a bookmark at Genesis in your Bible. Invite a kid to open it and reverently display the open Bible. SAY God speaks to us through the Bible. Everything God says in the Bible is true. Today s Bible story comes from the very first book of the Bible, Genesis. Point to the Bible story picture. Remind children that all the stories in the Bible fit together to tell an even bigger story. The Bible tells us the big story of how God rescues sinners through His Son, Jesus. TELL THE BIBLE STORY: Show the Bible Story Video and then recap the Bible story by reading the words below. SAY How wonderful that Esau was not angry with Jacob anymore! But even more wonderful that God appeared to Jacob! Jacob would not let God go until He blessed him. God changed Jacob s name to Israel. By dying and rising from the dead, Jesus made the way for us to be adopted into God s family. When we are adopted into God s family, we get a new name, too children of God. PRACTICE THE KEY PASSAGE: Cut out the Key Passage Marker and place it at Genesis 28:15. Invite a volunteer to come up and open your Bible to the key passage. Read the key passage aloud. Practice the motions you created for the verse. SAY This key passage comes from the Book of Genesis. God promised Jacob that He would be with him wherever he went. Does God keep His promises? God always keeps His promises. God had big plans for Jacob s family, and God s plans always come true. We can trust God. MISSIONS MOMENT: Say ( Distribute DJ s family prayer card) Form a circle. Toss a beach ball into the air and challenge preschoolers to keep it aloft without moving their feet. When the ball falls to the floor, prompt preschoolers to suggest one specific way to pray for missionaries like DJ s family. Share DJ s Family Prayer Card and remind preschoolers that we can partner with DJ s family through prayer. 4
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: Break into smaller groups with one leader in each group. Ask the question and open up for discussion. Remind preschoolers that Jacob sent animals as gifts to Esau. Jacob hoped Esau would be happy with the gifts. Maybe then Esau would forgive him. Display the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions. Retell portions of the Bible story as needed: -Why was Jacob afraid to see his brother Esau? (Jacob had stolen his father s blessing from Esau.) -Why did Jacob tell part of his family to go one way and the other part to go another? (If Esau fought one group, maybe the other group could get away. ) -Whom did Jacob wrestle with all night? (God) -What did God change Jacob s name to? (Israel) -Was Esau happy or angry to see Jacob? (happy) - Does God keep His promises? God always keeps His promises. PRAY TO CLOSE: SAY Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Ask the group if anyone has any prayer requests and pray together as a group. SNACK: Gather preschoolers for snack time and have them wipe their hands with a sanitizing wipe. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Serve animal crackers as a snack. Remind children we can trust God because He is faithful. EXPERIENCE the Story ACTIVITY 1: Move your body Print, cut out, and assemble the Movement Cubes. Invite preschoolers to take turns tossing the cubes. Read the movement and the body part on the top of the cubes to children. Lead preschoolers in performing the action. Each time the cube lands on hips, remind children of how God hurt Jacob s hip when they wrestled. SAY God hurt Jacob s hip when they wrestled. God told Jacob that he wrestled with God and won. Was Jacob stronger than God? No way! God is most powerful. God said Jacob won because he would not let go of God. Jacob learned that he needed God most of all. God changed Jacob s life and gave him a new name. God changed Jacob s name to Israel. God was going to bless the whole world through Jacob s family. ACTIVITY 2: Name art Write the name Israel on a sheet of colorful paper for each child. Provide crayons, markers and stickers for them to decorate. Write the story point on the art. SAY God gave Jacob a new name: Israel. God sent Jesus through the people of Israel. GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES. 5
TRANSITION AND DISMISSAL: For the remainder of the time, kids may color the Bible story coloring page, play a simple game to practice the key passage, or sing another song together. CHECKOUT PROCEDURE: As parents begin to arrive, open the door and have one leader stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet. Take the parent s security sticker and call loudly for the child to come. While you wait for the child to come, tell the parents something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the service and distribute the preschool big picture cards for families. Before you let the child leave the classroom, look to see that the parent and child security codes match and remove the sticker from the child s shirt as they leave. Note: If a parent lost their security sticker, send them to the check-in desk for approval; never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security sticker. 6
