Elementary Kids Club August 2016 Kids Club is an environment designed to compliment the primary large group/small group kids experience. Kids Club also allows parents to participate in serving, small groups and other Sunday morning opportunities. K-5 th graders who stay for two consecutive services may join Kids Club. The goal of Kids Club is to: Allow kids to review the main concepts they learned in large group/small group. Give kids opportunities to practice Bible Skills and learn memory verses Provide many different types of service experiences for kids Create opportunities for social growth as kids have fun together Each month kids will experience four or five different themed weeks that will repeat from month-to-month. Curriculum provided for each week will be enough for minutes of content. Themes will be as follows: Week 1-Serve Each month kids will have an opportunity to serve others as directed by their leaders. They may write notes of encouragement, prepare gift bags, go on prayer walks, etc. There also may be campus specific projects to join. Week 2-Grow Kids will practice Bible skills, and have a short discipleship moment followed by discussion/application. Week 3-Challenge Kids will demonstrate recall of scripture and Bible skills in several contest challenges. Campus leaders may choose to offer localized incentives for accomplishments. Week 4-Create Kids will create a fun craft from a pre-packaged kit that will also provide opportunities for discussion and review. Week 5-Party During months where there is a fifth week, kids will celebrate with a themed party (when appropriate). Kids can celebrate what they learned during the month, play fun party games, watch fun movies and eat snacks. Also, campus leaders will provide materials for localized free-time stations. Kids Club leaders should limit each child s time at these stations and encourage kids to rotate between free-time opportunities. Ideas for Free-time stations: Board games, video games, crafts, four square, etc. Suggested Schedule 10 minutes Kids arrive and begin rotation stations or free play minutes Weekly curriculum activities 20 minutes Directed rotation stations 5 minutes Dismissal
Week 1: Serve (August 7) Main Point: God gave us the world so we should take care of it Bible Story: God s creation (Genesis 1-2:3) Memory Verse: Fill the earth and govern it. Genesis 1:28b Prepare: Read the Bible story and be ready to help kids review it. Fill a small tub with water and grab some towels and wash cloths. Have a CD player ready to play some soft music as you wash feet. Make sure the video cue is ready to play. 2. Ask kids to re-tell the Bible story and help them fill in the blanks. 3. See if kids can already recite the verse from memory. Repeat the verse several times with them aloud. Tell kids that on week 3 (Challenge Week) kids can win challenges for memorizing the verse! Activity 2: Introduction to service (10 minutes) 1. Say, Each first Sunday of Kid s Club we talk about serving and do some kind of service project. Ask, Why do we serve others? Allow kids to answer. 2. Say, Jesus wanted us to understand how important serving is and so he demonstrated how we should serve others. Let s watch a video about how Jesus gave us an example of how to serve others. 3. Play the video from Youtube Review. Ask, Why do you think Jesus washed his disciples feet? How do you think the disciples felt when Jesus washed their feet? Do you think they had to think for a minute to take Jesus seriously and allow Him to serve them? Activity 3: Wash their feet. (10 minutes) 1. Say, Now I m going to demonstrate serving for you. Please take off your shoes and socks. Let s be very quiet as we watch and listen. 2. Set the stage for this and understand that some kids might be uncomfortable. Don t force kids to participate but, in humility, encourage their reverence and respect for the moment. Try to do this quickly and quietly. Play the CD for mood music. 3. Review. Ask, How did you feel when I was washing your feet? Do you think you can understand Peter s response to Jesus better now? Activity 4: How can we serve? (5 minutes) 1. Say, Jesus doesn t mean we should actually wash everyone s feet. There are many ways to serve people. Let s brainstorm and figure out some ways we can serve others even today. 2. Write down kids ideas to validate them. Pray and ask God to show kids many opportunities to serve and ask the Holy Spirit to encourage kids hearts to act. Activity 4: Rotation Stations (20 minutes)
1. Allow kids to split up into pre-determined rotation stations. If possible, choose 3 2. If necessary, encourage kids to rotate between stations until pick-up 3. As parents pick up their kids be sure to check their claim stickers. Encourage kids to Week 2: Grow (August 14) Main Point: God Loves Everyone, and So Should I Bible Story: Peter is summoned by Cornelius (Acts 10) Memory Verse: I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. Acts 10:34b Prepare: Make sure your room has enough Bibles for every child. Also, check your video/media ahead of time and talk with your children s minister about the best way for kids to watch. The Bible Skills portion will be a continuation and/or review for kids who have attended Kid s Club for the last few months, but it will be brand new to new kindergartners. This is a good time of year to begin again. 2. Ask kids to re-tell the Bible story. Help them fill in the blanks See if kids can already recite the verse from memory. Repeat the verse several times them aloud. Tell kids that on week 3 (Challenge Week) kids can win challenges for memorizing the verse! Activity 2: Video (10 minutes) 1. Say, Each 2 nd Sunday of the month we re going to grow in our Bible skills and discipleship. We have some new friends here today so let s watch these clips together to learn more about what s in our Bible. 2. Play these clips from YouTube. a. The First 5 Minutes B76&index=1 b. What is a Testament. 4B76&index=3 Activity 3: Bible Skills--Sections of the Bible Review (10 minutes) 1. The Bible is divided up into sections. Does anyone remember how many sections? Can you name them? (Old Testament--Pentateuch, Historical, Prophets, Wisdom, New Testament--Gospels, Acts of Apostles, Epistles, Revelation)
2. Say, Now let s take a look at which books make up those sections. Pass around Bibles and ask kids to take a look at the table of contents. Point out the following as they look at the table of contents: a. The Pentateuch contains Genesis-Deuteronomy, the first 5 books of the Bible. Why does Pentateuch mean? (5 Books, or 5 scrolls) b. The Historical books are Joshua-Esther. How many books are there in this section? (12) These books are arranged to tell a chronological story of God s people beginning when they arrive in Canaan. c. The Wisdom books are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (Solomon). These books contain poetry, songs, sayings and wisdom. d. The Prophets section contains Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel (Major Prophets, 5) and then Hosea-Malachi (Minor Prophets, 12). What s the difference between the major and minor prophets? (The major prophet books are longer and have much more history in them so they are called MAJOR. The minor prophet books are shorter and are usually about one or two events.) e. The Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Whose story do the Gospels tell? (Jesus s) What does Gospel mean? Good news f. Acts of Apostles is really only one book Acts. But sometimes people include the book of Luke in this section because it helps to set up the story of how God s church started. Name some Bible characters mentioned in Acts who were prevalent in the beginning of the church. (Peter, Stephen, Barnabas, Timothy, Slias, Saul/Paul, and others) g. The Epistles (or Letters) contains Romans through Jude. They are actually a collection of letters written to churches or individuals. How many Epistles are there? (21) How many did Paul write? (13 for sure, 14 if you include Hebrews, which many people believe he wrote, too) h. Revelation is the final section and includes just one book, Revelation. It s about the last days of Earth and how Jesus will return and take all his followers to Heaven. Who wrote Revelation? (John, the disciple) 3. As kids look through the table of contents say the books out loud together as you reveal which books belong to which sections. 4. As time allows, quiz kids on which books belong to which sections. Ask them to close their Bibles as you quiz. Activity 4 (optional): (10 minutes) If you have Bible review tools (Pie-pans/clothes pins, posters, etc.) feel free to use them. Activity 5: Rotation Stations (20 minutes) 1. Allow kids to split up into pre-determined rotation stations. If possible, choose 3 2. If necessary, encourage kids to rotate between stations until pick-up
3. As parents pick up their kids be sure to check their claim stickers. Encourage kids to Week 3: Challenge (August 21) Main Point: God Knows Everything I Do Bible Story: God knows everything about me (Matthew 10:9, Psalm 139:1-6; 13-18; 23-24) Memory Verse: O Lord you have examined my heart and know everything about me Psalm 139:1 *Some of the games will be repeats for kids who have attended Kids Club for several months, but new to upcoming kindergartners. Challenge is a special week where kids will compete to show their knowledge of scripture, how to use their Bible and Bible trivia. Please consult your Children s minister about how to carry this out. You could divide into teams and award team points for challenge victories. The winning team would win the big prize at the end (the losing team a lesser prize). You could also allow kids to accumulate points individually and earn their own rewards. Prepare: Talk with your children s minister about your plan to provide incentives for Challenge week and make sure you have all the supplies you need. You may also need to print the verses on large sheets of paper as a helpful reference as kids memorize. 2. Ask kids to re-tell the Bible story. Help them fill in the blanks See if kids can already recite the verse from memory. Repeat the verse several times them aloud. Tell kids that this week they can win challenges for memorizing this verse and verses from previous weeks! Challenge Game #1 Bible Trivia (Feel free to add your own questions!) 1. Name the four sections of the Old Testament. 2. Name the four sections of the New Testament. 3. How many books are in the OT? The NT? 4. Name Bible characters whose stories are told in Acts. 5. What does the word Gospel mean? 6. Bible Sections Game Play as time allows a. Name a random book of the Bible and ask kids to identify the Bible section in which it belongs. b. Name a section of the Bible and ask kids to name a Bible book that belongs in the section.
Challenge Game #2 Hot Potato (Genesis 1:28b) Have children sit or stand on the floor in a circle. The first child says the first word of the verse and rolls or bounces a ball to anyone in the circle. The child receiving the ball says the second word of the verse and so on. Challenge Game #3 Ping Pong (Acts 10:34b) This game can be played in pairs or in teams with the children facing each other in a line. A child calls out the first word of a verse, then another calls back the second word, and so forth. Challenge Game #4 Verse Relay (Psalm 139:1) Divide the children into two teams. Place a chalkboard, white board, or large sheet of paper at a distance from the starting line. Hand the first child of each team a writing implement, and on the shout of Go have him run to the writing surface and write the first word of the verse. Then have him return to his team and hand the writing implement to the second person. The team that finishes writing the verse correctly first wins. Memory Verse Challenge Now that kids have had a chance to practice and learn verses give them time to recite the verses to a leader. Award points for each verse they can recall from memory. *Take some time to reward kids for doing a great job in whatever way you and your campus kids minister have decided. But also help them understand that the short term pleasure they get from a prize is nothing compared to the joy of having God s word in their hearts for a lifetime! Activity 3: Rotation Stations (20 minutes) 4. Allow kids to split up into pre-determined rotation stations. If possible, choose 3 5. If necessary, encourage kids to rotate between stations until pick-up 6. As parents pick up their kids be sure to check their claim stickers. Encourage kids to Week 4: Create (August 28) Main Point: God is with me everywhere so I should talk to him all the time! Bible Story: Jonah tried to get away from God (Jonah; Psalm 139:7-10) Memory Verse: Never stop praying. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) Prepare: Read the Bible story and be ready to help kids review it. This month s craft is a sticker sheet that tells the story of Jonah. Prepare one sticker sheet ahead of time as an example for kids to see. 2. Ask kids to re-tell the Bible story. Help them fill in the blanks
See if kids can already recite the verse from memory. Repeat the verse several times them aloud. Tell kids that on week 3 of next month (Challenge Week) kids can win challenges for memorizing the verse! Activity 2: Create (20 minutes) 1. This week our project is a sticker sheet that will allow kids to review and re-tell the story. This is an easier craft that will work well or all kids, especially new kindergartners. 2. As you introduce the project, take a look at the available stickers and the scenes to decorate. Talk through what may be happening in each scene to help kids prepare to use their stickers well. 3. Give kids several minutes to work on their own as you float around to help and answer questions. 4. After most kids are finished allow them to present their projects to the class. Activity 3: Rotation Stations (20 minutes) 7. Allow kids to split up into pre-determined rotation stations. If possible, choose 3 8. If necessary, encourage kids to rotate between stations until pick-up 9. As parents pick up their kids be sure to check their claim stickers. Encourage kids to
