1 Th e Temple Isr ael Conn ec tion K ESHER F ebrua ry, 2010 Our Se venty-f irst Ye ar! I N T H I S I S S U E Calendar 11 Adult Education 4,7,10 Religious School 4 -,8, 10 Special Services and Programs 4-10 Yahrzeits 12 The Rabbi s Study Do not separate yourself from the community. This advice from the sage Hillel guides us to get to know our neighbors, to be active in local groups, to participate in events in our cities and towns and even to vote. As members of Temple Israel, we practice this teaching through our involvement in the Dover Friendly Kitchen, making donations to the Dover Food Pantry, attending Dover and other interreligious events, and planning programs that bring together our congregation, Temple Israel Portsmouth, and other groups or organizations. Our donations towards relief efforts in Haiti demonstrate that we see ourselves as part of a worldwide family, and that extending a hand in this way is a natural outgrowth of our tradition. As part of my own community involvement, I participated in two Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday commemorations in January, one sponsored by the Dover Area Religious Leaders Association and Dover Cooperative Ministries and the other at the University of New Hampshire, co-sponsored by the UNH Chaplains group of which I am a member. I was asked to share a song at the gathering, and I decided to present the song I created for the Dover Community Thanksgiving Service, based on the Hinei Mah Tov text, which reminds us how good it is to be together as a community. For some time, I thought the song needed a finishing touch. I completed it on the day before the event by quoting from several sources, including a well-known declaration by the prophet Amos, a line from My Country, Tis of Thee, and a statement made by Theodor Herzl, the early leader of the Zionist movement: Let justice roll down like waters Let it flow like a mighty stream Let peace and freedom ring all over the earth If you want it, it is no dream! One of the best ways that we have to create justice, fairness, peace and freedom in our society is by building bridges that foster understanding. For many years, in my previous congregation, we held two special Shabbat services each year with that goal in mind: Teacher s Night, a Sabbath service at the end of National Education week in November, to which students could invite teachers from their weekday school to attend a Shabbat service that featured explanations of our prayers and Jewish practices and a question-and-answer period before the end of the evening; and Neighbor Night, in February at the end of Brotherhood/Sisterhood week (a program initiated by the National Conference of Community and Justice), to which congregants could invite friends, neighbors, co-workers, classmates and other guests to come to a service to learn about Judaism. We will hold our first Neighbor Night service this month on February 19. Please invite someone that you feel would enjoy this opportunity to broaden their knowledge and horizons! There is much that we can do to be a part of the community and to engender common ties and understanding through what we do at Temple and in our daily lives. Let us remember Hillel s words when we think of our own place in our neighborhood, our nation and in the human family. Each of us can make a difference! The deadline for submission is the tenth of the month for the following month s issue of Kesher. Tammy Fascetta TempleOffice@dovertemple.org Rabbi Larry Karol lpkarol@aol.com Rabbilarry@dovertemple.org From our Co-Presidents, Margie Fisher and Carole Krassner Dear Friends, Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. (Martin Luther King, Jr.) It s hard to believe, but in accordance to the secular calendar Spring is only 6 ½ weeks away. With all our grumbling and complaining of shoveling, scraping ice off windshields, the extremely cold temperatures lately, Mother Nature has been relatively easy on us this winter, although I m sure before, it s all said and done, we will be saying differently. We are so fortunate to live in New England, considering what other parts of the country have been going through with tornadoes, flooding, mudslides, etc., and, most of all, the heart wrenching tragedy in Haiti. We take so much for granted whether it be taking that warm shower, trying to drink those eight healthy glasses of water each day, relaxing on the sofa each evening and perhaps looking through the fridge or cupboards for that little snack. Imagine not having a faucet to turn on or any water to drink, for that matter, and not having a bed to sleep in or a place to call home. We URGE you to please support Haiti by sending in a donation through one of the organizations that Rabbi Larry has listed in the Kesher. No matter how small a donation, it all adds up. To quote from the song written by our very own Rabbi Larry, Kol Ha-umim, based on Psalm 117: With caring hearts, with smiling faces, be neighbors, not strangers who strive to be kind! As we seek out peace by working together, the trust we are are building will open our minds. From every corner, we ask God s blessing, stand by us and guide our way. We are your children, a single people, unite us all over the world each day! At Temple, we have lots to look forward to in addition to our very heartwarming services each Friday evening. We look forward to your support in attending the Snowflake Soiree to be held this coming Saturday evening. Purim will be celebrated during religious school hours on March 3 and Shabbat Across America on March 5. Please check the Kesher for more information on these events as well as others, including two films related to Israel and the Middle East on February 11 (with a question-and-answer period with one of the producers) and February 18. A great big thank you to Maschi and Glicka Kaplan for sponsoring the Tu Bish vat Seder this past week during religious school hours. Thank you to Vickie Fisher for stepping up to chair the new Social Committee. The library committee is beginning the huge project of weeding out and reorganizing the Temple Library. Watch for our new updated look in addition to a new system to sign books out.. Please don t forget our ongoing Mitzvah Project to support the Dover Food Pantry all year round. There are bins in the foyer at the temple to leave non-perishable items. Please let us hear from you not only to let us know how we are doing, but also with any ideas that you might have for social events or perhaps a combination of social/fundraising. Our operating budget is EXTREMELY lean and we are looking for ways to raise money. We are looking forward to hearing from you. 7 Page 7 Febru ar y, Join us for a screening of the film Encounter Point, followed by a discussion led by Nahanni Rous, one of the film s producers on Thursday, February 11 at at Temple Israel Encounter Point is an 85-minute feature documentary film that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the conflict. Their journeys lead them to the unlikeliest places to confront hatred within their communities. The film explores what drives them and thousands of other likeminded civilians to overcome anger and grief to work for grassroots solutions. It is a film about the everyday leaders in our midst. Producer Nahanni Rous has been an integral member of Encounter Point's team since the initial research stages. She played a key role in selecting, interviewing and building relationships with Encounter Point's film subjects, and in shaping the film throughout the editing process. Nahanni has presented Encounter Point for the "Celebrating Nonviolent Resistance" international conference in Bethlehem, Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the New Initiative for Middle East Peace (NIMEP) at Tufts University, the Network of Arab American Professionals and American Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee in Boston, Brit Tzedek V'Shalom/the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace, alumni of the Bronfman Youth Fellowship and the Dorot Foundation Fellowship in New York, and the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. Nahanni was a producer, writer, and reporter for WBUR Boston and WRNI Rhode Island public radio stations, and traveled across the United States in the fall of 2001 interviewing Americans about their reactions to September 11. She also served as assistant to National Public Radio's Jerusalem-based reporter Linda Gradstein. Nahanni is the Washington DC-based Project Co-Manager at Just Vision, a non-profit that widens the influence of Palestinian and Israeli grassroots peace builders.
