1 Th e Temple Isr ael Conn ec tion K ESHER No vember, 2010 Our Se venty-se c ond Ye ar! I N T H I S I S S U E Calendar 11 Adult Education 1,,4,6,10 Religious School/Family Events 4,6,7 Special Services and Programs 4-12 Yahrzeits 14 The Rabbi s Study In around 1975, a rabbi went to visit one of his long-time congregants whom he hadn t seen at Temple during his two years at the congregation. The woman told him that she hadn t come to services or other events for many years because she was still angry about the building fund. The rabbi calmly replied, Well, that was in Wouldn t it be all right to come back to Temple now? The member firmly responded, Rabbi, I was not talking about the building fund of I was talking about the building fund of 1925! The story, from another congregation, is absolutely true! From my own upbringing, I very much understand how someone might hold on to a feeling for 50 years in a congregation. I also know that refusing to relinquish that emotion kept that woman from experiencing the positive aspects of community which were very much present in that congregation. I know how many times my parents were not happy with approaches and behaviors they saw among some Temple members, but they remained active and reaped the benefits of being part of a Temple family, something that was very much evident in all the years that they were members and in the support our family received at the time of our parents deaths. An article in the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle on October 24 ( it should still be there) focused on the many rabbis confirmed at my home Temple over the last 70 years, including my brother and me. The nurturing of leadership of members of all ages in a congregation comes from successfully navigating through difficult challenges and taking time to celebrate milestones and major accomplishments. At the foundation of all relationships in a Temple must be mutual respect, a sense of openness to new possibilities even when change may not be preferred or welcome, a constant acknowledgement of being part of a team, a reverence for the sanctity of a Temple and its purpose, and a commitment to support the congregation through whatever means are personally within reach because of a belief in the power of community. Beyond all that, I have learned that persistence is key, as well as an ability to see the glass as half-full. In the Torah reading for the last weekend of October this year, Chayei Sarah, Abraham s servant (named Eliezer by the rabbis) went to find a wife for his master s son, Isaac. When he arrived at his destination (among Abraham s relatives), he prayed that there would be one woman who would instinctively know to offer him water AND to offer his camels water to drink as well. He was looking for a woman who would show both initiative and kindness. It happened that one woman did exactly as he had hoped Rebekah, whom we mention in every service. Eliezer knew that she would be able to take charge of Isaac s household with confidence and goodness. Like Rebekah, we have the opportunity at Temple Israel to demonstrate kindness, respect, initiative, and a warmth that will draw us together and sustain our ties as fellow congregants through trial and disagreement and, hopefully most often, times of success and satisfaction. I look forward to your continuing partnership as we continue to move towards the future with determination and hope! (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Can you believe it s October 28 th and it s 72 degrees outside? Can you believe that, in a few more days, it will be November and we will soon be turning our clocks back to Standard Time? Although there are no Jewish Holidays in the month of November, it is Jewish Book Month. Please support the Book Fair at Temple, which begins on Wednesday, November 3 rd. It s a good time of the year to stock up on a few good books for the winter months. There are two very meaningful holidays in the month of November on the secular calendar, the first one being Veterans Day. These days, most children have absolutely no clue of the meaning of Veterans Day. They only know that it means a day off from school. With all of our daily gripes and complaints, we should never forget that many men and women sacrificed their lives to gives us the freedom that we have today. It is up to us to educate our children and grandchildren on the meaning of Veteran s Day which also brings to mind that we have the freedom to vote for any candidate of our choosing. Please don t forget to vote on Tuesday, November 2 nd. Another observance is Thanksgiving Day. We will soon be planning our menus for Thanksgiving dinner, doing our grocery shopping for the meal and wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Why not give more thought to the meaning of Thanksgiving and those that are less fortunate and unable to provide a nice meal for their family? This is a good time to reinforce as Jewish people, doing mitzvot, including acts of kindness and tzedakah. There are many congregations and organizations that take donations to provide people with turkeys and all the fixings. To practice our Jewish values, let s do our share. You can also join others in giving thanks at the Dover Community Thanksgiving Service on November 21. It s also a good time to bring to mind the support that is needed by the Dover Friendly Kitchen. You can offer your support by volunteering your time the first Thursday of the month or by giving a monetary donation. A huge thank you to Andra Welch for coordinating each month on behalf of the Temple. You can contact Andra at abbwelch@yahoo.com or A great big thank you to Jane Liemer for coordinating a booth at Apple Harvest Day. Thank you to all Temple members who volunteered their time as well. A great big thank you to Ilese Stevens for her fundraising efforts to sell approximately 120 challahs and babkas and taking the time to drive to Brookline, Massachusetts to pick them up. All absolutely delicious! Watch the Kesher for further information on a social fundraiser chaired by Ilese and Craig Stevens to be held right here at Temple on January 29th. Also, watch for further information on the Art Auction to be held on April 16 (chaired by Alan Goldfarb) and the Nosharama on May 15 (chaired by Rhonda Karol and Rabbi Larry Karol). In order for these events to be successful, it is important for everyone to sell tickets to people outside of the Jewish Community. We appreciate and welcome your help and participation! Friday, November 12 th is the New Hampshire Rabbis Pulpit Exchange. Join us in extending a warm welcome to Rabbi Robin Nafshi of Temple Beth Jacob in Concord who will be leading services here at T.I. Congratulations to our very own Rabbi Larry receiving the Wentworth- Douglass Hospital Spiritual Care Award. We are so proud of our rabbi! Watch for an upcoming edition of the Jewish Reporter. You may very well see a recipe and article on your Temple president. Please don t forget our ongoing Mitzvah Project, providing for the Dover Food Pantry. I welcome hearing from each and every one of you with any suggestions or recommendations. Don t forget to get out and vote and have a Happy Thanksgiving! L shalom, Carole TEMPLE OFFICE HOURS: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 am 1:30pm 1:30-6:00 pm when Religious School is in session

7 Page 7 Novemb er, VOICES OF TEREZIN Smoke of Home By Zdeněk Eliáš& Jiří Stein, translated by Dorothy Elias Prologue and Epilogue by Barbara Korner; Directed by Raina Ames Original production conceived by Gail Humphries-Mardirosian Voices of Terezín incorporates the play Smoke of Home, a powerful piece written by two remarkable Czech Jews, Zdeněk Eliáš& Jiří Stein, who were imprisoned at Terezín, a fortress town that was transformed into a concentration camp in what is now the Czech Republic. Terezín served as a collection camp for inmates on their way to the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Prisoners found release from their unbearable circumstances through artistic creations ranging from operas and cabarets to concerts and covertly produced drawings that collectively recorded the truth of the camp. Although Smoke of Home is a play about prisoners of the Thirty Years War, its themes paralleled the longing for home of those interned at Terezín. It was never performed inside the camp.
