6 Page 6 October, Yom Kippur Message from our President, Carole Krassner Welcome---L shanah tovah and Shabbat Shalom. Because I have the need to take a deep breath, feel free to join me. Take a deep breath and think how blessed we are to be together today in this beautiful building, surrounded by the warmth of community, with our wonderful rabbi, in a natural setting provided by Mother Nature and feeling so close to God. In fact, let s take a moment to wish someone sitting close to you a l shanah tovah. I have to confess.after all, I have several more hours to fess up. Getting up and speaking in front of a large group of people does not come easy to me. Even at this very moment, I feel as though a flock of butterflies has invaded my body. I m sure that many of you can relate. Putting that aside, today I would like to speak to you about what I am very passionate about and what is extremely near and dear to my heart: our synagogue, our rabbi, and our Temple community together as a partnership. Last March it became very evident that as Jewish people, we were being challenged. YES, we were being tested AGAIN. Our financial situation was so dire that it was questionable if we would be here today, together in this space with our rabbi. We are not unique in this situation. There are synagogues in the Boston area that have been extremely financially stable in the past that are now experiencing great difficulty, but we are unique in that our Temple and our rabbi know how to come together as a community in times of crises. I put out a plea for help, and, without a moment s hesitation, Michael Behrendt, Steve Giguere, Paul Pasternack, Mark Rubinstein and Jeff Segil stepped up to the plate to put their heads together in an attempt to get us back on track. Thank you to all of them. As most of you, I am sure, are well aware by now, we then had the need for a congregational meeting. Volunteers came forward. In this year, we have had more volunteers than I can recall in my thirty plus years as a member of this Temple. This past spring, Rabbi Larry and Rhonda Karol organized the first Nosharama Food Festival here at Temple Israel. We had more than sixty volunteers out of this temple community and more than two hundred people showed up to support this event, many of them being from outside the Jewish community. Thank you, Rhonda and Rabbi Larry. This congregation was not going to sit back. We all have the same goal to keep our vibrant Jewish community alive in this building, with our rabbi, so that we can be together not just for us, but for our children and future generations to come, as Jewish people to leave a legacy here in Dover, NH. You should all have the opportunity to visit the temple when Religious School is in session under the direction of Rabbi Larry and see all the happy faces and listen to the laughter filling the building. Thank you to Rabbi Larry, the Religious School teachers and the madrichim for doing such a great job. Our temple community has shown we know how to come together and this is only the beginning. We have just begun! Just this past week, a purchase and sales agreement was signed by me as president with an extremely reputable developer to sell off a parcel of land that fronts Sixth Street. This well help us in reducing the principal on our mortgage. A great big thank you to Stuart Scharff, Larry Gray, Michael Behrendt and Heidi Krassner-Willette for working with the developer John O Neill to make this happen. On October 2 nd, our temple will have a fundraising booth at Apple Harvest Day thank you, Jane Liemer. There we will be a social/fundraiser here at Temple on January 29 th thank you, Ilese & Craig Stevens. This coming spring, there will be an Art Auction Fundraiser here at temple thank you, Alan Goldfarb. Please don t forget, instead of using Google, use Good Search and Good Shop. There is no cost to you, and the temple will benefit Thank you, Marianne Rechy. We also plan to have another Nosharama thank you, Rabbi Larry and Rhonda. You might ask what your role is in this. Donations are always gratefully appreciated. We need to increase our membership. We need more volunteers to participate and also people to support these events. We need our temple members to bring in people outside of the Jewish community to attend these events and to encourage unaffiliated Jewish people to join our temple. Jeff Segil and Alan Goldfarb will soon be speaking with more information on committees, events, accomplishments and how you can help. Being president of Temple Israel is one of the most difficult and challenging experiences I have faced in my life. Through all the stress and all the sleepness nights, I am so proud, so very proud to be Jewish and I am so proud to Continued on the next page

7 Page 7 October, part of this Temple Community. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our outstanding Board of Directors. Each and every Board Member is on at least one committee, something that hasn t happened for many years. A special thank you to Cathi Cherry-Lison for coordinating the honors for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Thank you, also, to Rabbi Larry and Tammy Fascetta, our Temple Administrative Assistant, for their tremendous support. It is on all of us to keep our vibrant Jewish Community alive. I ask that you take the time to think of others less fortunate, particularly in this economy. Please support our ongoing Mitzvah project providing for the Dover Food Pantry, not just at this time of year, but all year round. To our guests, we would love to have you as part of our temple family. You can call the office and Tammy will be happy to send you a membership form or you can download a membership form from the temple website. We make it very easy for you. I like to end my monthly message in the Kesher with this passage from our Friday night prayer book, Mishkan T filah: May it be your will, our God and God of our ancestors to lead us in peace and help us reach our destination safely, joyfully and peacefully. L shalom, Carole Community in The Hood The Sisterhood Now that the High Holidays are behind us and we have each come away with our own special thoughts and impressions of that time, I am going to take the liberty to say thank you to Rabbi Larry for beautiful and thought-provoking services. Also, thanks to all those ways choral and musical enhancement made the services so meaningful. The Yom Kippur break-the- fast also left an impression on me. This was the first time I ve had the pleasure participating as a Sisterhood volunteer in the set up of the Break-the-Fast. I have to admit I was quite nervous not knowing what to expect. When the challenge started to get under way, I was simply amazed watching a congregation unite like family, to accomplish what was necessary. The unity brought warmth and the warmth made the task exhilarating. The Sisterhood wants to thank the entire congregation for the camaraderie and all the wonderful appetizing food. Thank you to our able-bodied young men and women (young-in-age and young-at-heart) for speedily setting up the tables and chairs, and saving some of us women from broken nails and broken backs. Thank you, Ann Isacoff, for providing a helper to wash our dishes and make the kitchen sparkle. Above and beyond all, the Sisterhood and I are sure that the congregation thanks Stacy Smith-Jackson and her wonderful teens, Alexa and Jeremy Jackson, for performing such an amazing feat in the kitchen and set-up. They made the challenge go as smooth as soft butter on bread. From start to finish, their know-how and organization made for a beautiful, glitch free evening. A special thank you is also extended to The Bagelry in Durham, for the more than generous donation of bagels and cream cheeses. The High Holidays are now behind us and we have each come away with our own special impression of that time. Mine includes community. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo...of handcuffs. Hospital Visits: Please keep us informed! Due to national privacy laws, hospitals are not allowed to call congregations to inform them that their members have been admitted as patients. If you know you are going to be in the hospital in advance, please call the Temple office. If you find yourself in the hospital unexpectedly, please tell a nurse that you would like to see the hospital chaplain, who can call the Temple to let us know that you are there. Survivors of Nazi Slave Labor Camps Focus of UNH Holocaust Lecture on Tuesday, October 12 The history of Jewish slave labor camps in Poland and how the victims survived is the focus of the Hans Heilbronner Lecture at the University of New Hampshire Tuesday, Oct. 12, Presented by the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of History, the lecture Holocaust History and Survivor Testimony: The Case of the Starachowice Factory Slave Camps begins at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building, Theatre II. The lecture and following roundtable discussion are free and open to the public and sponsored by the Endowed Fund for Holocaust Education. Chistopher Browning, the Frank Porter Graham Distinguished Professor, Department of History, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will present the lecture based on his newest book, Remembering Survival: Inside a Nazi SlaveLabor Camp. The book is a study of the Jewish factory slave labor camps in Starachowice in central Poland and is based on nearly 265 survivor testimonies. A ro und tab le d iscu ssion, Crossing a Line: Why do Ordinary People become Murderers or Bystanders, will follow the lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Richards Auditorium, Murkland Hall. The roundtable will feature Browning, and UNH professors John Kirkpatrick, David Hiley, Vicki Banyard, and Ben Harris. The Hans Heilbronner Lecture is named in honor of professor emeritus Hans Heilbronner, who taught Russian history at UNH and who served the university with distinction from 1954 until 1991.

TEMPLE ISRAEL ART AUCTION Dear Members, I am writing to tell you about Temple Israel s major fundraiser scheduled for April 16 th, We have contracted with a major art auction house to come in and do an auction for the Temple with all the proceeds going to Temple Israel. If we do this right we can earn between thousand dollars. To do it right we will need some help from you, the members and your friends. We are looking for 15 people to help put this auction together. We will need someone to head up the ad Book, ticket sales, publicity, entertainment, refreshments, parking etc. This CANNOT be done without your help. We will need people to start selling ads and tickets at least 3 months prior to the auction. We will also need people the day of the auction to be recorders and cashiers. This will be our major fundraiser for the year. We will have an organizational meeting in September and maybe 2 or 3 more before the actual auction on April 16, 2011 at the Temple.
