4 Scholar-in-Residence Program on February 20 23, 2014 Dr. Jehon Grist, the Executive Director of Lehrhaus Judaica in Berkeley, is a well-known author, educator, and research archaeologist with field work in both Egypt and Israel. He has published articles about Biblical history, Egypt, Israel, and the Philistines. Dr. Grist s presentations include rich illustrations, text excerpts, and video clips (except on Shabbat). All presentations are open to the community. Contact adulted@beth-david.org for more information. Thursday, February 20, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Out of Egypt: Our Long Relationship with the Land of the Pharaohs Dr. Jehon Grist discusses the entangled relationship between Egypt/Egyptians and Israelites/Jews that has spanned across four millennia. This colorful talk helps us understand that our relationship with Egypt, ancient and modern, is much more complex and nuanced than we might imagine, something to ponder as we read Exodus, start thinking about Pesach, and try to assess modern Egypt's internal struggles and relationship to Israel Saturday, February 22 after Kiddush lunch (about 1:30 p.m.) Two Characters, One Divine, One All Too Human: Asherah and Josephus Dr. Jehon Grist reviews texts from Tanakh and Josephus works, giving us a sense of these two characters strictly from what is written. The subsequent illustrated sessions on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning will show what archaeology and contemporary non-biblical texts tell us about Asherah and Josephus, enhancing the limited view in the texts examined on Saturday afternoon. Surprises will emerge later, when we explore beyond these texts. Saturday, February 22, 7:00 p.m. Did God Have a Wife? - The Mystery of Asherah Dr. Jehon Grist illustrates the full story of God s wife before the Jerusalem Priesthood demanded their divorce. This presentation includes many images, video clips, and brief texts (following on those discussed Saturday afternoon). It delves into both positive and negative consequences of the first successful monotheism to imagine an Israelite religion with Asherah and divine feminine. Sunday, February 23, 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Flavius Josephus: Traitor or Hero? Shabbat Mishpaha (family) Experience Friday, February 28 th at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate Shabbat at our upbeat, family-friendly service where you can grab a drum, shaker or tambourine to enhance the spirit of the celebration. Service includes Humash presentation to Kita Vav (6 th graders). This community presentation recognizes pre-bnei mitzvah students who are embarking on tutoring and mentoring in preparation for this important rite of passage. Shabbat Shekalim (Donor Appreciation Shabbat) Saturday, March 1, 2014, 9:30 a.m. Join us for a special Shabbat service to thank all of the donors to our Annual Campaign. Your generosity helps to fund all of our many programs and is greatly appreciated! Heschel Havurah with Rabbi Ohriner Saturday, March 1, 2014, after lunch (about 1:30 p.m.) Descended from a prominent Hasidic dynasty, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was one of the leading Jewish theologians and philosophers of the 20 th century.
