2 FROM THE RABBI Rabbi Sandford R. Kopnick I hope you have a joyous Chanukah and a wonderful secular new year! Faithfully, Why Not Study with Us? Others have called us "the people of the book." Our long tradition as a people that values education has led us to wonderful places in our history. Soe in our tradition even suggest that study is akin to prayer-thus aking our tradition of study on Shabbat even ore iportant. Ours has been a tradition where we try to educate everyone in our counity-not just the privileged. Throughout our history Jewish people of all walks of life sat with each other around the Rebbe's tisch (a table where the rabbi sat with students) to learn about the week's Torah portion, a lesson fro Talud, or another Jewish concept. Our adult education coittee and I are trying to develop as any different types of learning situations for our adults as possible. In January, we will be sending our next adult education brochure. In addition to a three-week presentation by Dr. Gary Zola, Executive Director of the Jacob R. Marcus Center of the Aerican Jewish Archives, we will continue our Hebrew classes, and offer two different seinars of 4-weeks each (details to follow). There are two opportunities, however, that I wish to invite you to-iediately. Most Saturday ornings we gather at 9:30 a.. to study the weekly Torah portion. When we gather, we assue no prior experience and have a spirited discussion not just about the Torah portion, but whether it applies to our lives. We consider the voices of our tradition through the idrash and coentaries-and soe odern thinkers, too. It is a wonderful discussion-and we want you to join us! You need not ake a coitent to be there every week. Join us once, onthly, or weekly-we'd love to have you! The second opportunity is our Lunch and Learn progra. On the first Thursday we eet in the conference roo of Office Suites plus on Reed Hartan Hwy in Blue Ash. The Second Thursday of the onth, we gather in a law office in the Bartlett Building in Downtown Cincinnati. We discuss current issues confronting the Jewish counity, the state of Israel, rabbinic response to edical ethics, business ethics, and refor Jewish practice. This is a wonderful chance for you to apply Judais to odern issues and your life! It is an iperative of Jewish life that you learn throughout your life. The exaple we set for our children and grandchildren is wonderful. The greater depth that we achieve when looking for eaning in our own Jewish identity is profound. The tie is now. Sandford R. In October, the students in grades 7-8 spent an over-night at the Goldan Union Cap outside of Indianapolis. With Indiana University students as songleader and counselors, the progra was wellplanned by our rabbinic intern, David Locketz. Rabbi Kopnickjoined the group on Saturday. In Noveber, Grades 4-6 went to GUCI for a day-long Shabbaton. Also well attended, this day-long retreat featured services, educational prograing on the thee, "prayer," and lots of tie for fun. Our faily education progra is now in full swing.
