3 Sept/Oct Elul/Tishrei 5778 Each year, as we listen to the Hazzan and the choir sing with the congregation on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the famous poem, B yom Tzom Kippur ; I can t help but think intensely about the terrible events, both man-made and natural, during the past year. We sing who shall live, and who shall die, who by stoning, and who by fire? I ve always chosen to never literally interpret these words, but to look at them metaphorically. Now, however, they assaulted me with their literal meaning. I m wondering if the same experience happened to you. How do we respond to such tragedies? I have tried, many times, to offer some ways to begin to address these issues, but only time will tell if we can really learn from these events. In other words, will we be inspired to improve our society, our own family life, and our approach to Jewish tradition? Or will we be stunned into submission, calmly accepting what either man or nature has thrust upon us; will we learn to trust more, love each other more, and involve ourselves more with the world around us? We must put everything in perspective the strength of Judaism is that we can respond in a positive way to calamities that befall our society. We have all that we need in our tradition that will enable us to build in a spiritual sense that which is so necessary for us to live in a compassionate and loving community. We need each other to find the strength to accomplish this task. Let this be one of the main messages of these upcoming holidays, as we fully embrace On behalf of myself, Meira, Rabbi Ari & Rachel (with Jonah and Lilah), Rachel & Rabbi Dan (with Eitan), Dani & Nomi, Reena & Oren, and Eliana, please accept our best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year. 4 Sept/Oct Elul/Tishrei 5778 Religious School News Reba & Art Douglass Hebrew School begins Tuesday, September 4:00 pm at Temple Hesed. Our wonderful faculty is Rabbi Daniel Swartz, Rika Schaffer and Hilary Greenberg. Jaffe Family Torah for Tots/Mechina Temple Israel will be twice a month on Tuesday afternoons 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm beginning on September 26. Ann Monsky will be returning to teach the tots and we are happy to have Sam Myers join the faculty as our Mechina (1 st & 2 nd Grade) teacher. Sam has spent this past summer at Camp Ramah as a senior counselor working with that age group and is excited to continue doing so at Temple Israel. This program is open to members and non-members. Spread the word. The more the merrier! The mission of the Hebrew School is more than to just learn Hebrew and prepare for bar or bat mitzvah. The purpose is to prepare our children to participate in Jewish community and communal events, become comfortable in services, make Jewish values relevant to daily life, and to allow children opportunity to spend time with other Jewish children to develop a sense of community. Ideally, we hope families view the Hebrew school as an extracurricular activity for their children to enjoy and embrace Judaism and their connection to other Jewish children. Jenny Gell Honorable Menschens Todah Rabah to: Mark Berger At this time of remembering, the Temple Israel Cemetery Committee is pleased to announce the completion of a major restoration project in our Dunmore Cemetery. Under the leadership of committee chair, Lew Sare and committee board member, Iris Liebman, over 600 markers and 64 monuments have been lovingly cleaned and where necessary, rebuilt. This project was entrusted to Mark Berger and his staff at Fairview Monument Company. Mark and his team began their work last fall and completion occurred this Spring. Mark personally supervised every aspect of the restoration. The committee thanks Mark for his dedication, diligence and professionalism. We hope Temple members and guests will visit the Dunmore cemetery and embrace the beauty and spirituality of this special place. 8 Sept/Oct Elul/Tishrei 5778 This month I would like to share with you my thoughts concerning regarding the end of the current year and the beginning of the New Year The past year at Temple Israel has been full of many exciting and memorable events. I greatly appreciate all of the members who either planned or attended each of them. I would like to personally thank all of You for making 5777 year such a wonderful year here at our temple. Of course none of the above would have been possible without the full cooperation and hard work by Rabbi M. Saks, President Lou Nivert, the officers and the Board of Directors. Day to day, the office staff and maintenance kept everything running smoothly. I am so grateful to Fern Pollack Hart and the Temple Sisterhood headed by Marian Beckhorn for everything they do. We as a congregation are so fortunate to have had so many dedicated people doing so much throughout this past year. No one has done more various tasks than Karen Pollack who deserves the sincere gratitude of the entire Temple membership. As your Cantor it is my pleasure to tell all of you how much I appreciate those individuals comprising our High Holidays Choir, and my students and volunteer members who have contributed so much to our weekly Shabbat and all Holiday services. Right now my attention is focused upon the upcoming Musical Selichot Service on Saturday night September16, beginning at 9 pm. Pianist Linda Houck and violinist Mark Woodyatt will accompany our High Holiday choir. Do what ever you can to make sure you attend this fabulous evening. My family and I want to wish all of you a Healthy Sweet and Prosperous New Year. Shona Tova u Metukah Yad Squad Todah Rabah to: Our members who enriched our services this summer and for the High Holidays by reading Torah or chanting Haftarah. Howard Platt, Seth Gross, Richard Bishop, Ed Monsky, Ben Simon, Michael Mardo, Louis Nivert, Alan Firestone, Jay Schectman, Steven Sugarman, Jay Demerer, Howard Becker, Jeremy Sohn, Sam Myers Henry Litvak, Seth Pollock, Murray Fallk, Patrick Forrest, Lyndsey Cohen, Adam Vale, Jared Cohen If you would like to join the Yad Squad please contact Cantor Aronzon. Selichot: Prayers of Repentance These special prayers are recited during the month preceding Rosh Hashanah. The Mahzor Vitry, an 11th century work describing the yearly cycle of observances and prayers, tells us that it is a custom to begin on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah to rise early to the synagogue, before the sun rises, and beg for mercy. In the words of one of the poetic texts recited at this service: Selichot, prayers for forgiveness, are ancient prayers already mentioned in the Mishnah. They originated as prayers for fast days. The Mishnah describes public fast days and the order of prayer for such occasions as featuring a series of exhortations that end with the words He will answer us, recalling the times in Jewish history when God answered those who called upon Him. The Tanna deve Eliyahu Zuta, a midrashic work that dates at the latest to the ninth century, mentions a special service for forgiveness instituted by King David when he realized that the Temple would be destroyed. How will they attain atonement? he asked the Lord and was told that the people would recite the order of Selichot and would then be forgiven. God even showed David that this act of contrition would include a recitation of the Thirteen Attributes of God, a descriptive passage from Exodus that expresses God s merciful nature: The Lord! The Lord! A God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, rich in steadfast kindness, extending kindness to the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; yet He does not remit all punishment (Exodus 34:6 7). 13 Attributes Over the centuries, special poems embellishing this passage were added to the Selichot. The exact poems to be recited may differ from place to place, but the basic elements of the service have remained the same throughout the Jewish world. Because of its emphasis on God s forgiving nature, this text describing The Thirteen Attributes plays an important role in the Yom Kippur liturgy as well. A Moving Service The effect of a Selichot service can be quite moving. We sense the extraordinary nature of the prayer and turn introspectively within ourselves. The prayers themselves are pleas for mercy. The melodies are sad and full of longing. Properly chanted, they form an oratorio expressing the despair that accompanies separation from God and the desire to change and repent. The self deprecation contained in the words, which express the feeling of life s fleetingness, and the burden of vanity that motivates so much of what one does, all cause us to ponder how we can break the cycle of our lives and change ourselves for the better. The possibility of change and of a better life is inherent in these prayers: O Lord, hear our voice in the morning; in the morning we set them before You with hopeful expectation. Hear our voice It is always darkest before the dawn. Yet the dawn is not far off, both literally and figuratively. 8
