The roundtable provides a unique opportunity to talk with Rabbi Allen as she leads an informal and interactive discussion focusing on topics of contemporary Jewish interest.

4 Page 4 THE SHOFAR Our Congregation Beth Sholom members are truly a phenomenal group of people! We are blessed with a diverse, gifted, generous, dedicated and active roster of members, enriched by the future members who often come to us initially as guests. Their activities and contributions to the congregation are visible everywhere at services, educational and social events, where they prepare the building, the grounds, utilities, food, sanctuary, prayer books, Talleisim and even the Torah (members and guests regularly help me to ready the Torah for the next Saturday service). They teach, they lead and they give. This volume of the Shofar is filled with the proud accomplishments of our members, both in the synagogue and at outside venues. They sponsor Oneg Shabbat and Kiddush refreshments, whose home cooking and baking distinguish our congregation s special flavor. Barry Wright s article in this edition highlights the continuing generosity of our members to the Food Bank, and reminds us of the urgent need for all of us to continue supporting the work of this invaluable community resource, as well as the many other worthy charitable projects brought to us by our members. These provide a wonderful opportunity for us to fulfill the mitzvah of tithing, tzedakah, to which we are all obligated. During this holiday season in particular, our donations become an integral part of our spiritual experience. They uplift our hearts as they benefit the lives of others. Our gifts to the congregation itself are also an important form of tzedakah. So many of the special things we enjoy in our beautiful, unique and historic synagogue have originated in the very personal, heartfelt and even handmade contributions of our members. From the books, to the ritual objects and artwork, to our precious building itself, its landscaping and all of its well-loved contents, everything we touch in our communal life together elevates our prayers, our celebrations and our relationships. Thank you all for everything you do, and everything you give. Our leadership is rich with the hearts of those who share themselves with Congregation Beth Sholom. Our members have all made this a sweet and happy holiday season for me, and I wish for every one of you to be inscribed and sealed for a joyful, healthy and fulfilling new year ahead shanah tovah u m tukah tikateivu and a g mar chatimah tovah with love and blessings Rabbi Karen Allen

5 September/ October 2018 Page 5 As the holidays approach, I want to take the opportunity to tell our guests and remind our members why Congregation Beth Sholom is so unique and special. The congregation is over 60 years old. It began in the early 1950s when a few Jewish families in Leesburg gathered in homes to celebrate Shabbat and the Holidays together. By 1953, Congregation Beth Sholom was incorporated and was in the process of erecting the synagogue. It is 64 years since the first service was held in our sanctuary, and 24 years since the social hall addition was completed. We own our building, there is no building fund. We have a wonderful Rabbi, Karen Allen, whose magnificent voice and warm, welcoming style make every one of our services and observances special. Although she works for us part time, in addition to leading our services, Rabbi Allen conducts the Rabbi s Roundtable discussion group, inspires us with her articles in the Shofar, and is available to help congregants through any life events. We celebrate Sukkot, Chanukah, Tu B Shevat, Purim, and Passover, often sharing a meal or snack together as we enjoy the customs of each holiday. We socialize together. After every Shabbat service we enjoy an Oneg Shabbat or Kiddush in the social hall, lingering to chat after the food is eaten, and we get together just to get to know each other on our Social Sundays. We are The Synagogue that Feels like Family. We know each other. We care about each other. And we love spending time together, at our wonderful Shul. If you are visiting us for the holidays, I hope you will consider becoming a member. We have so much to offer. If you are already a member, I hope that you will invite your friends to spend the High Holidays with us so they can see all that Congregation Beth Sholom has to offer. I look forward to seeing you at High Holiday services, Shana Tovah U Metuka May you have a good and sweet New Year Linda President-at-BethSholomFlorida.org (replace at

Contact Dave Englander at for more information. S lichot Saturday September 1st 7:00 PM Rosh Hashanah is celebrated in the Hebrew month of Tishrei. However, the process of reflection begins in the month prior. On Saturday September 1st at 7 PM, Marsha Stemerman, our Gabbai, will lead us in a special S lichot program. It will begin with the beautiful Havdalah ceremony marking the end of Shabbat. We will then have a short S lichot service which will start us reflecting. This is a time of introspection, reconciliation, and heightened spirituality. Experience the magic of the ceremony transforming our bima and Torah covers from everyday color to High Holy Day white. The evening concludes with the blowing of the shofar. Refreshments will be served. Please join us for this memorable evening of spiritual preparation and dedication.

7 September/ October 2018 Page 7 Celebrate Sukkot with us on Sunday, September 30 at 1:00 Bring your favorite dish (as long as it does not contain meat of any kind) to share. Salads, dairy foods, fish (but not shellfish), vegetables, breads, fruit, and desserts are all needed. After we eat we will begin the service with the mitzvah of shaking the lulav and the etrog. The service will celebrate the holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Call Edith Freiwirth at to RSVP Dan Hirschfeld created this beautiful spice box and donated it to the synagogue. Dan and Eileen dedicated the spice box in memory of their daughter, Deborah. Donate your Jewish Books to The Library of Judaica at University of Florida During the months of October and November we will be collecting books for the Library of Judaica. If you have Jewish themed books that you wish to donate, contact Fred Jacobs at after October 3rd. SEND A CARD AND SUPPORT THE SYNAGOGUE There are lots of reasons to send cards: birthdays, anniversaries, get well, condolences, congratulations. Your donations can benefit the synagogue and let someone know you care! Mail your donation to the synagogue, along with your message. For more information contact Dave Englander at He will send the card on your behalf, and your good wishes will appear in the Shofar.

13 September/ October 2018 Page 13 By Barry Wright, Congregation Beth Sholom Director I have now been working at the Leesburg Food Bank for 2 years and understand the lows and highs of the flow of food. The food bank is just a few blocks from the synagogue and on Thursday s, I go to the shul first to collect any items that have been left there by our members and guests since the last time and then take them over to the food bank. After that I work in the warehouse area dealing with the food until noon. It is now August and the striking thing that you observe in the Food Bank is the number of empty food crates, where we normally collect and store the food on the shelves. I would guess there are probably at least 100 empty crates. During the winter months when the snow birds are back, there are days when we cannot find an empty crate. This summer has been exceptionally bad since the Post Office in Orlando messed up the distribution of materials for the annual food drive. The Food Bank this year got around 7,000 pounds of food from the Post Office versus the normal food drive that collects around 35,000 pounds of food. The food bank gives out approximately 35,000 pounds of food a month to its clients. An important note, no one at the food bank gets paid from the President to the daily volunteers. The key people are very conscientious and hard working people. Most of them work at least 4 days a week. As an example, the person who does the pick up of the food from the food stores gets up at 3:30AM every day to do this pick up and has done this for years. The Food Bank takes in food, clothes and furniture and anything else that may be useful. Do you use all the cooking implements in your kitchen? When was the last time you went through your closet and got rid of clothes you no longer wear or that no longer fit. Remember someone else could use them. They also take magazines that are oriented to the home. Remember they provide all this to the people they serve totally FREE of charge. The Leesburg Food Bank is located 2 blocks north of the synagogue at 503 N.13th Street. The Food Bank is nondenominational. They serve the community from 10AM to 12PM Monday through Thursday. You may drop off food, clothing, furniture, books, etc. from 8:30AM till 12PM Monday through Thursday. If it is too big to bring yourself please contact them at and they will pick it up. Pick up is Monday thru Saturday. If you have small items you may also drop them off at Beth Sholom and they will be taken to the Food Bank. The Food Bank does not charge any fees for the items they provide to their clients. They handle families a day. They also work with seniors and the homeless. Take advantage of the BOGO specials at Publix when you go and pick up the extra one for the food bank. Please provide reasonable size food items, because they have no way to break them down. Thank you to everyone who has donated clothing, food, and household items to the Leesburg Food Bank.
