Even the wind and the sea obey him! (Mark 4:41) Did You Know? crowd had gathered around Jesus again. People were following him, hoping to be A healed or to see a miracle. Jairus, a leader in the synagogue, found Jesus. Jairus held a very important office which was usually given to wealthy people who could afford to provide or maintain the synagogue. Even with his status, he fell at Jesus feet. Jairus humbly asked Jesus to save his daughter who was very ill. In faith, Jairus asked Jesus, My daughter is about to die. Please, come and place your hands on her so that she can be healed and live. The laying on of hands was an action Jesus used frequently when he healed someone. Jesus went with Jairus, but before he could get through the crowd, a woman touched him and was healed immediately. Jesus stopped to tell the woman, Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace, healed from your disease. While this was happening, messengers came to Jairus to tell him his daughter was dead. Jesus calmly told Jairus, Don t be afraid; just keep trusting. Peter, James, and John went with Jesus to Jairus s house. A crowd had gathered at the house, and they were crying and mourning loudly. Often professional mourners were hired for occasions like this. Jesus asked them, What s all this commotion and crying about? Then he said, The child isn t dead. She s only sleeping. The mourners laughed at that, and Jesus threw them all out. Taking the child s hands, Jesus said to her, Young woman, get up. Life returned to her, and she got up and walked. Jesus told her parents to give her something to eat. The simple act of eating showed the crowd that she was truly alive, because ghosts or spirits were believed to be unable to eat food. Jairus had faith Jesus could heal his daughter even from the dead, and Jesus honored his faith. 2 JUMP IN! The following activities may be done in learning centers as the children arrive or with the entire group. ASSEMBLE THE CREW Supplies: Resource Pak p. 2, Adventure DVD, DVD player, offering basket Greet each parent and child as he or she arrives. Display the Attendance Chart (Resource Pak p. 2). Show the children where to place their offerings on the worship table. Play Let s Go Deep Blue on the Adventure DVD. HIDDEN WORD Supplies: Reproducible 13b, crayons Photocopy Hidden Word (Reproducible 13b) for each younger child. Give each younger child a copy of Hidden Word. SAY: Color the sections on your paper with o s a dark color. Color the sections on your paper with x s a light color. Then you will find a word that has been very important in all of our stories this month. When the younger children have finished their pages, go over the word they found. ASK: What does the word power mean to you? Whose power have we been talking about this month? In what ways did Jesus show God s power? CROSSWORD PUZZLE REVIEW Supplies: Reproducible 13c, pencils Photocopy Crossword Puzzle Review (Reproducible 13c) for each older child. Give each older child a copy of Crossword Puzzle Review. SAY: The questions on your puzzle are from the stories this quarter. Fill in your answers. Allow the older children time to finish their puzzles. Go over the answers with the older children. AFRICAN DRUM Supplies: Reproducible 13d, large sturdy paper or foam cups, masking tape, markers, crayons, large round balloons, rubber bands, twine or string, scissors Photocopy African Drum (Reproducible 13d) for each child. 3 SAY: A favorite instrument used in Kenya is a drum. Let s make our own drums to play with our songs. Cut out the bottom of two cups. Poke a hole in the bottom to get started. Then carefully tear out the rest of the bottom. Place one cup upside down on the table. Place the other cup right side up on top of the first cup. Tape the two cups together. Cover both cups from bottom to top with strips of masking tape. Also, cover the opening of the bottom cup with masking tape. Using markers or crayons, decorate your drum in a fun African design. Cut a circle out of one side of a large round balloon and stretch it over the top of the cup. Use a rubber band to secure it to the lid if needed. Wrap twine or string around your drum to decorate. Practice playing the drums to music. FUTBOL KENYAN SOCCER Supplies: masking tape Photocopy Futbol Kenyan Soccer (Reproducible 13f) for each child. Using masking tape, lay out a large square in an open space in your room. If possible, allow the children to play this game outside or in a gym. Give each child a copy of Futbol Kenyan Soccer. SAY: Futbol is the most common game Kenyan children play. The rules are similar to soccer. Often they make their own ball by rolling newspaper and plastic bags together into a ball and tying string around the outside. Before we play, let s go over the rules. Mark off a large square with masking tape. Divide the group into two teams with mixed ages on both teams. The older children can hit the ball with their feet or heads. The younger children may also use their hands. Start the game with two teams facing each other in the middle of the square. The leader will throw the ball into the middle of the teams. The first team to hit the ball will take control of the ball. Your goal is to keep the ball moving toward your line and keep it away from the other team. If the ball goes outside the lines on the sides, the game stops and the ball goes to the other team. When a team is able to move the ball across the end line that they are facing, play stops and the leader will begin the game again like the beginning. 4 MANDAZI KENYAN DONUTS Supplies: warm water, baking powder, all-purpose flour, sugar, vegetable oil, salt, mixing bowls, mixer Photocopy Mandazi: Kenyan Donuts (Reproducible 13e) for each child. It won t be practical to have the children make these during Sunday school. You could make them at home and bring them to Sunday school, or enlist an adult in the church to make the donuts, or just send the recipe home with the suggestion that the children make these with their parents. SAY: Almost every country has its version of a donut for dessert. In Kenya, the donut is called mandazi. Mercy shared some mandazi with the Deep Blue Kids. You can take the recipe home and ask your parents to help you make some. DIVE DEEPER DEEP BLUE BIBLE ADVENTURE Supplies: Adventure DVD and player SAY: It s time for the Deep Blue Kids to leave Kenya, but they share one more story together. Watch today s episode from the Adventure DVD. ASK: Do you think it was hard for Jairus to ask Jesus to heal his daughter? What do you think you would feel if you had been in the crowd at Jairus s house? Do you think Jairus had the same thoughts as the crowd about Jesus ability to heal or even bring back to life his daughter? Why or why not? LEARN AND SERVE WITH THE DEEP BLUE KIDS CELEBRATION DANCE Supplies: music, drums made earlier If possible, find some Kenyan music to play for the celebration. SAY: We have had a wonderful time this quarter in Africa, but it is time to say goodbye and travel to another country. For our last day in Kenya, let s do a celebration dance. Kenyans dance and play music for many different events, but it is always a celebration. Play the the Kenyan music you have found. Allow the children to dance to the music. Also allow the children to play their drums they made earlier as they dance. SAY: We have made many new friends in Kenyan. We celebrate our new friendships. Winter Session 13 deepbluekids.com 93

5 READ THE BIBLE STORY Supplies: CEB Kids Bibles Ask an older child who is a confident reader to read the Scripture from the Bible or a teacher or helper can read it. You may also ask a younger child to read the story from the Deep Blue Bible Storybook. Ask the children to find Mark 5:21-24, The older children can help the younger children find the Scripture in their own Bibles. Even if they can t read the Scripture, they can learn to find books of the Bible and follow along. Encourage them to bring their own Bibles and learn how to use them. JAIRUS S DAUGHTER Supplies: Reproducible 13a Photocopy Jairus s Daughter (Reproducible 13a) for each child. Give each child a copy of Jairus s Daughter. Ask for volunteers for the different parts: News Anchor, Reporter, Person in Crowd #1, Person in Crowd #2, Person in Crowd #3. Allow the group to read through the parts. SAY: The Capernaum News crew is going to report the most amazing event that occurred in Capernaum. We interrupt our broadcast to bring you some breaking news: A Young Girl Is Raised from the Dead! Allow the children to act out the news report. If time allows, have them go through it a couple of times and add more action to the story each time. ASK: Which of Jesus miracles that we ve talked about do you like the best? Why do you like it the best? Which character in the different stories would you most like to be? Why? How would you answer the question, Who is Jesus to you? GROW STRONGER MISSION PROJECT SAY: Our mission for this quarter has been the ZOE Project which prepares children to help themselves. Children begin their journey to empowerment by joining a supportive ZOE working group of of their peers. For three years, ZOE empowers each group with skills training and resources. Once-vulnerable children then graduate as self-reliant young men and women able to provide for themselves and their siblings. Through ZOE, these children will find hope, become empowered, and prepare to lead. This is our final week for donations. 6 REVIEW TRIVIA Supplies: Adventure DVD and player SAY: This month has been full of wonderful stories. Let s see how much you remember. Play the review trivia on the Adventure DVD and allow the children to answer. SAY: You did great! You have learned so much! WORSHIP PRAISE AND PRAYER Supplies: Resource Pak pp. 3 & 10, Reproducible 13f, CD-ROM or Adventure DVD and player Learn the signs from the Unit 3 Sign Language Poster (Resource Pak p. 3) so you can teach them to the children. Display the Unit 3 Bible Verse Poster and Unit 3 Sign Language Poster (Resource Pak pp. 3 & 10) in your worship area. Photocopy Power (Reproducible 10f) for each child. Punch holes in the copies and place them in notebooks to be used as songbooks during worship time. SAY: Our song this month is Power. Hand out the songbooks and have the children find the song. Play this month s song and encourage children to sing and dance with the music. Show the children the Bible verse poster. Encourage readers to read the verse. Teach children the Sign Language for the Bible verse. Encourage all children to sign and say the Bible verse with you. ASK: What have you learned from Mercy and the people of Kenya? What can you take with you from the Kenyan people that will help you in your life? SAY: Now it is time to bless the offering we have received to give to the Zoe Project. Gather the group together in a circle. SAY: We are going to pray a prayer of blessing on this offering. We will go around the circle and anyone who wants to pray can have a turn. You can pray for the ZOE Project, for the children who are taking part in the ZOE Project, for the leaders to have wisdom from God to help the children, and you may pray for the children in Kenya to be blessed by God. 7 PRAY: Dear God, thank you for allowing us to be a part of the ZOE Project. Bless our offering and help it to be used to bless the children of Kenya; in Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
