2 nit 8: od s hosen ervant nit nformation Y or years prophets foretold the coming of hrist. his unit provides a brief overview of the prophetic messages, outlines how esus fulfilled the prophecies, and covers the beginning of esus ministry while on earth. Y saiah 7:14 saiah 9:6-7 saiah 11:1-2a atthew 1:18-23 atthew 3:16 uke 1:30-33 atthew 4:17-25 atthew 10:1-4 ohn 2:1-12 he essage of the rophets ollowing the xodus from gypt and the forty years of wandering in the wilderness to the land of anaan, od chose oshua to lead the sraelites. fter oshua defeated many of the anaanite cities, the people began to settle in the land. hey adopted many of the cultural practices of this new land, including idol worship. uring the period in which the judges ruled, the sraelites drifted further and further away from od. amuel was the last of the judges, and he ruled the people well. ut the sraelites wanted a king to rule, like the neighboring nations. avid, the greatest king, followed od. od blessed him, and srael became a great nation. olomon, avid s son, made decisions that eventually led to the division of srael into two kingdoms. uring the division of srael into two kingdoms (north and south), od brought forth prophets to be messengers to the sraelites and surrounding nations. he prophets proclaimed what od would do in their present situation and what od wanted the people to do. he prophets continually called the sraelites back to obedience and faithfulness to od. he ld estament prophets also spoke of what od would do in the years to come as they predicted the coming of the essiah. he ld estament contains 17 books of the prophets. saiah, eremiah, zekiel and aniel are referred to as the major prophets, while the remaining twelve books are minor prophets. (amentations is included in this section, but is not the name of a prophet.) he essiah omes or many years, the people waited for the coming of the essiah with great hope and anticipation. he prophets spoke of this essiah, or the nointed ne, as a avior, ing, and rince of eace. n ld estament times, being anointed was a nit 8 / od s hosen ervant: nit nformation 270

6 ear arents, uring this unit, od s hosen ervant, we will move from the story of esus birth to the beginning of esus ministry on earth. nit verview he students will learn how esus fulfilled the prophecies of ld estament prophets, and then will discover how esus called his disciples to follow him. hey will become familiar with the names of esus twelve disciples, and also learn of esus first recorded miracle. hrough learning the stories of esus call on people s lives centuries ago, children will be challenged to listen for how esus calls us today. emory erse ollow me, and will make you fish for people. You could talk about friends or family members who have decided to follow esus in some specific ways. You might even want to invite one of them to have dinner with your family, asking her/him to share how s/he tries to follow esus throughout each day. 8 You might want to make this exercise harder by asking that students not speak to each other at all during the activity. hen the students are standing in the correct order, have everyone read the names of the books of prophets in order. 1. alk about what prophets do: ive messages to people from od, warn people to turn away from sin, give people hope of a better future, etc. You may want to emphasize that all the books of the ld estament, from saiah on, are the names of prophets (with the exception of amentations, which is a series of five poems probably written by the prophet eremiah). 2. saiah s rophecies. xplain that saiah was a prophet who told about the coming of the essiah. istribute the handouts and have students locate saiah 7:14 in their ibles. t is in the top left-hand corner of their grid. (ook at answer key.) fter a volunteer reads the verse, have students write the prophecy (help them to paraphrase it in their own words) in the top middle block. ow follow the same procedure with saiah 9:6-7 and saiah 11:1-2a. ake one passage at a time and talk through it as a class, as outlined below. lternatively, you could make a list of the three ew estament references on the chalkboard and ask students to try to fill in the correct blocks independently. tudents should have the first two columns filled in. ow have them turn to uke 1:30-33 and ask someone read it aloud. hich of the three prophecies does it match? (You might want to point out the memory passage in verse 19 and help students to memorize it with the motions from page 271.) 2. eenact the story. nvite children to dramatize the story, since this helps children understand how the disciples might have acted, thought, and felt. ake a list of characters on the blackboard, and talk about the sequence of events in the nit 8 / esson 2: ollow e 282

15 story. sk children to volunteer to be the actors. ince this is a short story, you ll probably have time to act out the text several times, giving different children the chance to be involved. (hese activities will take longer than the regular lesson time.) ake a three-dimensional fish mobile. ave children draw outlines of fish on construction paper. hey should try to fill up the entire page. ut out the fish. race around the fish on another piece of construction paper and cut out the second fish. olor the fish with crayons. taple or glue the two fish together, leaving an opening in which to stuff shredded newspaper or cotton. taple or glue the opening together to keep the stuffing inside. unch a hole in the top of the fish and hang with yarn or thread from the ceiling. 21 od s hosen ervant 4: bjective tudents will experience a mock miracle and then list several kinds of miracles esus performed while on earth. ey oncepts esus ministry on earth included many different kinds of miracles. iracles are unexplainable acts that od performs on earth. ext: ohn 2:1-12 stimated esson ime: 35 minutes aterials wo jugs (one transparent, one not), lemonade crystals, large dipper or spoon rinking cups, preferably not transparent tudent ibles or xtend the esson, option one: construction paper in various colors eacher reparation 1. repare to perform the mock miracle of turning water into lemonade (see ntroducing the esson). btain two large jugs or containers, one that is transparent and one that is not. ut lemonade crystals (or other drink crystals) in the bottom of the non-transparent container. ill the clear container with water. 2. e prepared to help students locate other miracles of esus found in the gospels. emonade miracle. ell students that you re going to serve them all some water at the beginning of the lesson. our water from the clear container into the jug that has drink crystals at the bottom. asually stir the lemonade crystals into the water while you re talking about something else you could review the names of the disciples from the previous lesson, or review the ible memory for this unit. (You might not even have to stir the lemonade crystals if you have put enough crystals into the jug; stirring may raise suspicions among your students.) hen dip out some water into drinking cups and pass them around. ave fun with students responses. You might pretend to be surprised that it s not just water anymore, or ask them to figure out how the miracle happened. 1. esus first miracle. ell the students that while the miracle you performed has a rational explanation, the miracles esus did were beyond our understanding. ave the children find ohn 2:1-12 in their ibles and follow along as you read it. (You may want to help students understand that in esus time, wine was a commonly understood part of what made weddings special. ine was colorful, it tasted good, and it signaled that the event was very special. e have many other ways of celebrating special events these days.) 2. ther miracles of esus. urning water into wine was esus first recorded miracle. elp the students use their ibles to find other miracles of esus. ave them find the book of atthew and turn to chapter 4. xplain how to look at the headings the titles of the paragraphs. otice that in chapter 4, verse 23, it tells how esus healed the sick. (n the ible, there is a title, esus eals the ick. ) sk students to page through the book of atthew, looking for titles that tell of miracles esus performed. (ome of the miracles will not have titles such as atthew 8:1-4.) ome of the titles might include: he aith of the enturion, esus alms the torm, he ealing of two emon-possessed en, esus eals a aralytic, ead irl and a ick oman, esus eals the lind and umb, etc. ave students call out the miracles as they find them. ake a list on the chalkboard of the different kinds of miracles. iscuss the large variety of miracles that esus performed and explain that esus miracles helped people to believe that he was truly the essiah. (hese activities will take longer than the regular lesson time.) ater and wine activity. ave students draw two large jugs on pieces of construction paper, preferably in two different colors. ut them out and label one ater and one ine. sk the children to reflect on what change they d like to see in their lives or in the world. ave them write the before situation on the jug labeled ater and the after situation on the jug labeled ine.
