1 JBQ Lesson 10 Quizzer Name: Old Testament Prophecy
2 God Establishes His Covenant Topic: The Bible 8 10 Lesson Bible Fact-Pak Questions 161, , 494 OLD TESTAMENT PROPHECY Scripture references: Numbers 12:6; Deuteronomy 18:18; 1 Samuel 19:20; 2 Kings 19:5,6; 20:4,5; 2 Chronicles 35:25; 36:11,12; Ezekiel 1:3; Zechariah 11:13; Acts 2:17 In Old Testament, after Books of Law, History, and Poetry are Books of Prophecy. They are divided into two groups. 1. Old Testament Prophets In Old Testament times, God often spoke to His people through prophets. The Holy Spirit would come upon se men and women, and y would speak words God gave to m. In Deuteronomy 18:18, God says about a prophet, I will put my words in his mouth. God said that prophet will speak everything I command him. Sometimes prophets would see visions. In Numbers 12:6 God said, When a prophet of LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. Sometimes prophets acted out roles as God told m to do. These were like picture stories that described how God would deal with His people. For example, God told prophet Zechariah to throw thirty pieces of silver into temple (Zechariah 11:13). This was a prophecy that God s Son would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. BFP: The Major Prophets Five of books of Old Testament prophecy were written by people whom we call major prophets because ir books are longest of all prophecy books. The five books written by major prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Isaiah lived during days of King Hezekiah. He wrote about judgment and salvation God would bring to His people. Jeremiah is known as weeping prophet because he was often in great sorrow over sins of his people. The Book of Lamentations is a collection of Jeremiah s writings of sadness over his people s punishment. Ezekiel and Daniel lived during days when people of Israel were taken as captives to Babylon. Their books gave hope to God s people during a troubled time. BFP: 161, The Minor Prophets The rest of Books of Prophecy are called Minor Prophets because books are short. Being short does not mean ir messages are unimportant! Many of se books speak of judgment that would come to God s people if y did not leave ir false gods and turn back to worship only true God. These books don t speak only about judgment. They also express God s love for His people and gave m hope that Savior would come. Some of se prophecies were fulfilled when Jesus came to earth first time. Ors will be fulfilled when Jesus comes again. BFP: 494
