2 FROM CANTOR DEVORAH FELDER-LEVY Honor Your Father and Your Mother It s hard to watch our parents change from the vibrant people they were to dealing with issues of failing health and faulty memories. As I sit here writing this article, I m with my parents in Florida, celebrating my father s 89th birthday. How wonderful it is to be here with him. But it is bittersweet, as his memory is not quite what it was, especially his short term memory. He asks the same questions over and over again. Sometimes, he s aware that he s doing that, and other times, I don t think so. But with patience, we answer the question, again and again. The fifth commandment is Honor your father and mother that you may long endure on the land Adonai, your God, is assigning to you. This commandment isn t that we love our parents, but that we show them honor. Dennis Prager wrote in an article to the Jewish Journal, The great lesson of the fifth commandment is that in life we are obligated to behave in certain ways, whether we feel like it or not. This can be difficult for some. Not everyone is fortunate to have loving and caring parents, which makes it difficult to return that love. But we can still honor our parents even if we don t love them. The Hebrew word for honor is kavod, the same root that forms the Hebrew word kaveid, meaning heavy. According to Prager, honor means treating one s parents with the gravity that their position demands. Maybe, we don t get along with our parents, but according to the Torah, we should still honor them. Further, Gur Aryeh ha-levi, from the 17th century, commenting on the fifth commandment in Melkhet Mahshevet, said, It is natural for old people to be despised by the general population when they can no longer function as they once did, but sit idle and have no purpose. The commandment Honor your father and your mother was given specifically for this situation. How we bestow that honor is up to each of us. It s hard to watch our parents change from the vibrant people they were to dealing with issues of failing health and faulty memories. I m fortunate that I come from a loving home. My relationships with both of my parents is good. But like any relationship, it has had its moments, but because this relationship is rooted in love, we have always worked things out. It s why being here for my dad s 89th birthday was so important! While a calendar year gives us Father s Day and Mother s Day, a parent s birthday, and, if we are lucky, our parents anniversary, the Torah is reminding us that we should do this every day. May we all be lucky to have these wonderful relationships in our lives. If you or someone you know is caring for a family member dealing with cognitive issues, please know that there is help out there. On the second Friday morning of the month, the Alzheimer s Association, in conjunction with our Caring Committee, offers a support group here at Shir Hadash for anyone navigating the day-to-day difficulties of caregiving. 2 CONGREGATION SHIR HADASH

5 CELEBRATING FOUR Four Cups of Wine, Four Questions, Four Daughters, Even Four Matriarchs Our 4th Annual Women s Seder Sunday, March 18, at 2:00 pm 2nd Night Congregational Seder Saturday, March 31, at 5:30 pm The message of Passover remains as powerful as ever. Freedom is won not on the battlefield but in the classroom and the home. Teach your children the history of freedom if you want them never to lose it. Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks Come join the Women of Shir Hadash as we delve more deeply into the meaning and symbolism of the number four in the Pesach Seder. Looking at these through a feminine lens, we will explore texts, sing songs, and take time to share and visit with each other in sisterhood. The Passover Seder is heavily associated in many of our minds with children. We may remember our own childhood seders with our grandparents or think of happy times sharing the seder with our own children and grandchildren. The seder is an opportunity to answer young people s questions about our history and beliefs. However, the Passover seder is important for everyone, young and old alike. Reflect and learn both new and long-standing family traditions that we use in our homes. This year we invite you to bring a pair of candlesticks from home that have special meaning to bring light and beauty to our Seder tables. No one should be alone on Passover, so join Rabbi Schwartz and your Shir Hadash family during the second night of Passover. Everyone is welcome to this annual community seder, filled with learning, song, good food, and good conversation. The dinner will be catered. We will use a complete contemporary Haggadah with projection and share in the ancient story with modern reflections on the meaning of freedom. Registration is online and all are welcome. Passover Community Shabbat Saturday, March 31, at 10:30 am Celebrate the Shabbat of Pesach as a community with services and a special study with Rabbi Schwartz, which will lift up themes from the Passover story that provide meaning for us today. Sign up on the website or call the office. We anticipate that the seder will fill up quickly, so get your seat now! Please bring either a bottle of Kosher for Passover wine or a bottle of grape juice to share with those at your table, or a Passover dessert to serve 10. Adults: $40 Children 5 12: $18 Children under 4: no charge Give Once (GO) donors: no charge Passover Yizkor & Healing Service Friday, April 6, at 7:00 pm When someone dies, or when facing physical or mental health issues, our bodies, mind, and soul are often in need of healing. Perhaps, you or someone you know could use some words of comfort and care. In this brief service there will be readings and prayers of healing leading into the Passover Yizkor, a memorial service, to remember those we have lost. 6 C O N G R E G AT I O N S H I R H A DA S H 12:00PM - 2:30PM *Early Admission Kids under 5 at 11:30 am FOOD GAMES - PRIZES SPLASH RABBI PJ - OBSTACLE COURSE VR EXPERIENCE

A beautiful setting in the hills of the Galilee, Rosh Pina is home to one of the most dynamic Israeli Reform congregations. Rabbi Aron brought our Torah to Rosh Pina during a trip to Israel. In addition to her visits with the congregation for Purim and Shabbat, members of our congregation have been warmly welcomed there. Rabbi Tlalit Shavit leads the Be Rosh Pluralisti Congregation in Rosh Pina. Covering the northern area of Israel, the congregation aims to create pluralistic relations, to bring Jewish spirit and meaning into people s lives, to seek out and act for social justice. Rabbi Shavit joins us for Shabbat, both at a catered Friday night dinner (sign up on the website) and at evening and morning services. She will address the recent successes and challenges of the Reform movement, as well as speaking about the unique character of the community in Rosh Pina and her own journey from a more secular upbringing into the Reform movement. With a BA and MA in Jewish Thought & Philosophy from Tel Aviv University, Rabbi Shavit has been teaching at seminars and colleges around Israel for the past 25 years. On completion of Rabbinical Studies at HUC in Jerusalem six years ago, she began leading the Gilboa Congregation before moving recently to Rosh Pina. Born on Kibbutz Sdot Yam, Rabbi Shavit s journey of spiritual awakening is one of deep personal connection and a wanting to create a way of living where inside and outside meet.
