1 Parshat Vayechi 15 Tevet 5777 January 13, 2017 Candle Lighting 4:32 PM Menahel s Message: Looking Out for Number One? The berachot of Yakov Aveinu to each of the twelve tribes represent not only a father s prophetic personal aspirations for each of his sons but eternal lessons in priorities for all. When blessing Asher, Yakov references the bountiful bread of his tribe s portion: שמינה לחמו". "מאשר For Asher, explains the Alshich Hakadosh, plentiful bread was apparently more than adequate. Yet note the "והוא יתן מעדני מלך" words: same verse s concluding And he shall give (to others) delicacies of kings. Asher was content to subsist on bread and other basic staples, but when it came to giving to others, only the choicest delicacies would do. The Gaon of Vilna derives a similar lesson from the Torah s presentation of the mitzvah of matza. In commanding each Jew to personally eat matzot, tochlu, בערב" vav: without a חסר written is מצת" the word Yet when commanding the obligation to תאכלו מצת". ensure that matzot be eaten by others, tocheilu in the passive, matzot is spelled fully-, מלא- with a vav: (chaser)- Skimp for yourself שבעת ימים מצות תאכלו". but no cutting corners (maleh) when it comes to others! Food for thought. Shabbat Shalom. Rabbi Ari Jacobson Be Happy, Be Successful by Mrs. Debby Jacobson, Assistant Principal There is definitely a correlation between mood and success. A person who wakes up happy, excited by the prospect of a brand new day, has a greater chance of success than someone who wakes up dreading what lies ahead. Students who hate coming to school and would rather not be there, have zero motivation. How can we improve the mood of our children and students? How can you boost their chances for long term success? An important thing for us to teach our children is to be focused and organized. We must make sure that the long and short term goals that we set for them are specific and realistic. Teachers must make their classroom goals very explicit and clear to understand. Parents must make sure that expectations at home are precise. Without clear insight, children tend to shut down and give up. Children also need a proper work environment. Teachers must make sure their classrooms are neat and organized. At home, children need personal space that is clean and clutter-free. One must be comfortable with their surroundings in order to succeed. Passion also plays a part in mood and success. Most people choose a career that they feel enthusiastic about. If you enjoy what you undertake, chances are you will be happy. The same holds true for children. We must find a way to get our children excited about what they are doing so that they will thrive. A child s mood will definitely help determine how much they accomplish. As parents and teachers our goal is to create an environment that will keep their mood positive. It is our responsibility to help our children recognize what makes them happy. Our goal is to help them reach their greatest potential. Please join us for the annual How-To Fair presented by the 4th, 5th and 6th grade students on January 16th, 2017 from 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM in the ASHAR gym.
