Twenty-six years ago Rehoboth Christian Ministries was very young. A total of $531 was recorded for memberships and donations. This year boasted the highest membership base in Rehoboth s history (4,617 members) a 9% increase from the last year. It is a blessing to see that as Rehoboth continues to grow and expand its services, our membership base grows and expands. The Board of Directors has set a goal in the 2002/2003 Operating Budget, to reach 5,000 memberships and $125,000 in individual donations. We need your help to reach this goal! We are frequently asked about the importance or significance of becoming a member of Rehoboth Christian Ministries. Your membership, along with your prayers, can and does affect government decisions when Wally Mulder, CEO/Executive Director, negotiates funding for the programs that support individuals who live with disabilities served by Rehoboth Christian Ministries. Rehoboth Your Membership does MAKE a DIFFERENCE! A Place for Everyone... Numbers 2:2 continues to impress upon our supporting community the importance of a strong membership base and encourages each individual in your family to become a member of YOUR ASSOCIATION! Rehoboth Contact Persons will once again be recruiting volunteer canvassers to solicit memberships and donations from thousands of Rehoboth supporters from across the Province. Please respond positively to these requests. If you are not contacted by one of our Volunteer Canvassers this fall, please take a few minutes to fill in the coupon on the back page. Send it in with your membership fee and supportive donation to: Rehoboth Christian Ministries, Avenue, Stony Plain, Alberta, T7Z 2J7 or call us at for more information. *Individuals under the age of 18 are eligible to become Associate Members without voting privileges. Annual General Membership Meeting Report Highlights See page 2 The Israelites did not wander through the desert as an undisciplined mob. On the contrary, each tribe had an assigned place to camp. At the center of their camp was the Tent of Meeting (the tabernacle) a visual reminder, each time they pitched their tents, of what should be at the center of their lives.

Thank you also to our 8 volunteers! Rehoboth would also like to thank the Golf committee Bob Day, Dan Van Berkel, Bill Rooker, and Jaime Lubbers who presented a cheque to volunteer nurse and cooks we had an excellent camp experience. Activities included the usual swimming, bowling and a day at the Ranch riding on horses Golf Tournament Update and wagons. We had lots of time for socializing and we even managed to make a couple of crafts. Next year this week will be even better. Loading up for the wagon ride Rehoboth in the amount of $25,000. We hope you will all join us next year, Saturday, June 7th for our 13th Annual Golf Classic! Spring Sale May 18th the day of our Spring Sale, dawned warm and beautiful. We served breakfast to 63 individuals with the assistance of the fantastically generous members of the United Church Men s Group. Over 150 people attended our sale and purchased approximately $700 worth of plants and sundry items. Our total plants sales this season were $18, Summer Time Outings Both clients and staff enjoyed many outings into the community over the summer.
4 Page 4 September 2002, Issue No. 85 May 11: Annual Spring Sale and BBQ COALDALE There is always something happening in Coaldale in the spring and summer, and this year was no exception! Our greenhouse was absolutely packed to overflowing with bedding plants and hanging baskets for the Spring Sale! The weather wasn t conducive to planting in early May this year, but we had a large turnout of people wanting to buy something special for Mother s Day. The Sunshine Auxiliary, with the support of local churches, provided us with hamburgers and pie, and a wide variety of craft items and baked goods. May 25: Annual Golf Classic The weather cooperated for our golf tournament at Paradise Canyons and we had a great turnout, including golfers from Calgary, Red Deer and the Edmonton area! Our donation cheque was for $25,000.00, but we actually made closer to $27,000. June 4: Weird Hair/Hat Day On June 4th, staff and clients at the Vocational site in Coaldale had fun wearing weird hats, strange hairdos and face paint! We voted on the strangest creations and awarded prizes. A great time was had by all! June 14: Annual Port Roast Rehoboth s Annual Pork Roast is a popular event in Coaldale and draws about 400 people each year. This year we had our usual excellent turnout, with the usual EXCELLENT FOOD - thanks to our extraordinary Sunshine Auxiliary! We were pleased to have several Rehoboth Board Members in attendance this year, plus Administrative staff from all of the other regions. June 15: Annual General Meeting Coaldale was delighted to host the 2002 Annual General Meeting this year! Rehoboth wishes to thank Jake Nagtegaal of Spruce Grove for the donation of a tractor, beautifully restored by Jan Lanser and Jerry Barthel! Although it was originally delivered to Coaldale, it has found a permanent home at Gull Lake Camp. We re extremely grateful to Jan, Jerry and Jake for their generous donation, and to Lethbridge OK Tire, Venture Holdings, Wooden Shoe - Homestead Village, Bill Barthel and John Bekkering for their support in the restoration!
5 September 2002, Issue No. 85 Page 5 Time flies when you re having fun How does the old saying go: Time flies when you re having fun? Over the past few months, the truth of this statement has been very reinforced. The spring and summer months have gone by so quickly, and here we are into the fall season already. Looking back, although very busy, those of us in the Calgary region have much to be thankful for. Here are a few of the highlights: In April, we once again held our annual Spring Carnival. The theme of this year s event was Passport to the Nations. Staff members from various ethnic origins set up information booths and also shared samples of food popular in their region of the world. Friends, employees, family and other members of the Rehoboth community also enjoyed various games and activities, and the turnout was fantastic. In May, the staff at Rehoboth enjoyed Rejuvenation Days. These were two days of workshops designed to refresh and motivate everyone. The workshop topics ranged from work-related ones such as dealing with challenging behaviors through to more general interest ones such as True Colors. Many staff members participated, and the feedback provided has helped to begin plans for our next sessions. Stampede time in Calgary brought out the cowboys and cowgirls in all of us. We held our annual Stampede Breakfast on the first Saturday morning of Stampede, and the weather was perfect. Staff members and their families showed their many talents by providing the entertainment, and a big thank you to Gail Myers and his crew for providing the grill and doing all the cooking. The turnout was overwhelming, and a number of people commented on how much they enjoyed themselves. Now, as we enter into autumn, all our yahoos are being replaced by the more seasonal phrase fore! Yes, prime golf time is upon us, and that means Rehoboth Calgary s Fifth Annual Golf Classic! The tournament this year will be held at the Heather Glen Golf Course on September 14, The day is full of activities, and we look forward to another great event. Hopefully we will see you all there! Looking back over the spring and summer, and as we move into the fall season, I am reminded of the way things constantly change. Like the leaves on the trees changing colours, our lives also seem to never remain the same for long. But as Christians, we can go forward in the confidence that is only found in our Lord. Even as change occurs, we can trust and rely on Him for all things! Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal. (Isaiah 26:4) Justin Halbersma Calgary Region CALGARY As Christians, we can go forward in the confidence that is only found in our Lord.
6 Page 6 September 2002, Issue No. 85 Sean at full speed ahead Lunch at the Food Court THREE HILLS We do ensure that we take time out of our regular schedule to have some summer fun... We use the summer months to plan more out of town events. A trip to the West Edmonton Mall was our first attempt at fun in the sun. Our first planned date ended as fun in the snow and a turn around at Trochu (18 km down the road). The second attempt was not much better weather wise but our staff braved the elements and once everyone got to the Mall they had a great time. Some of the comments in retrospect were I had a blast driving the bumping cars, We had great food - chicken burgers and fries, and I had a wonderful time at mini-golf. Our team won!!! Of course everyone did a bit of shopping and were proud of purchases such as cool sunglasses or a cute backpack with sunglasses on it. Calaway Park was the next exciting event which again faced the odds of weather - this time rain. We are thankful for the rain but it seems to pick rather inconvenient days to fall. No matter, we went, it cleared off, and those that went had an enjoyable evening. Miranda s and Marianne s reports say it all - Miranda just loved it!! I went on some rides and got freaked out and Marianne says I was brave. I went on the roller coaster and I screamed all the way. Somehow I think some consumption of food added to the enjoyment of the evening. Several of our Three Hills clients play in the Rehoboth Handbell Choir. They practice throughout the year and play at such events as the Three Hills fundraising banquet and the festival. In June they had their windup party, playing for their family, staff and other guests and then enjoying a snack and fellowship together afterward. Harold said he particularly enjoyed playing and directing one song at the banquet and that when they played at the June windup lots of our friends and family came to hear us. Camp Rehoboth was attended by seven individuals from Three Hills. Some comments from individuals who have attended for several years were these: I like the good meals, I like bowling and horseback riding, the golf course is lots of fun, I like singing at meals, doing crafts and playing games, and naps are the best. The anticipation of camp and the reminiscing for months afterward often seem to provide as much enjoyment as camp itself and so make the camp experience a highlight of the year. Besides looking back and enjoying our memories we look forward as well to other personal events and vacations, to our Fall potluck dinner with all families, staff and advisory, and other special events that make our lives more full. In the midst of it all we carry on with daily tasks and responsibilities and the little daily things that bring joy and light to our lives.
7 September 2002, Issue No. 85 Page 7 Leadership Development Days If we teach the leaders the way, the rest will follow. highlighted our Stress Survival theme, and a workshop on Stress Management and Humour led by Maureen Burke. Throughout the two days we also did a number of Team activities that were competitive. These were good fun and didn t cause too much stress. This was a very enjoyable experience. I hope and pray that what we learned will be used for the glory of our God as we serve him at Rehoboth Christian Ministries. Each year from each region our leaders gather to seek direction. They came from Grand Prairie, Stony Plain, Coaldale, Three Hills and Calgary. Our minds were stretched to include new ideas. We shared our uniqueness with each other and we re able to get to know our counterparts in the other regions a little better. 8 Page 8 September 2002, Issue No. 85 Camp Ministry 2002 Here is a wonderful example of the impact Rehoboth Camp has on people that participate in this ministry. It was written to the volunteers of week two, to be read at the closing ceremony. This has been a week I will talk about with many people. As the week progressed, the Campers became more like Counsellors ( Are you alright? Good job! ) and the Counsellors became more like Campers (free to clap, squeal, laugh & cry, open to the small wonders, delighting in accomplishments as though it were the Oscars), and the differences faded. Two moments encapsulated what Rehoboth is for me - both involving scarves (camp craft this year). The first day, I saw two elderly ladies wearing their scarves backwards with the peaks standing straight up. It was Joan with her Camper, Cynthia. Cynthia, it appears had put hers on that way and Joan then did the same, and they wore them with dignity. Then, on the way to the pool, I watched Herman gently adjust Ken s hearing aid and nametag while sitting together. He put sunscreen on Ken s face and bald spot, then replaced Ken s scarf, headband style back on his head. I was 2 seats back and could just see their heads. Herman and ken s scarves on the same way, they looked at each other and smiled. Herman kind of giggled a bit at Ken s expression, adjusted his scarf slightly, and Ken smiled again - a long, slow smile. A moment of many, many moments this week, when a simple task became an eternal, holy moment because Name: Address: City: Postal Code: Church Attending: Special Cause: $ Membership: ($10.00/membership) $ Donation: $ of the compassion with which it was done.
