3 From the President As we prepare to celebrate the start of the High Holiday season in mid September, we are approaching a milestone anniversary that deserves to receive honorable mention. Congregation AM CHAI can trace its roots and beginnings to the Woodfield Jewish Congregation. It was 40 years ago that a small group of our friends and neighbors embarked upon a new venture. They created a synagogue that celebrated Judaism in a way that was distinctive and unique. Through the years, Woodfield Jewish Congregation became Congregation AM CHAI. We further solidified the core principles that our founding fathers established and have become a viable alternative for our Jewish friends, families and neighbors who believe that a congregation is so much more than brick and mortar. How did this happen? Many thoughts come to mind but for the sake of brevity and limited bulletin space, I will reflect on only a few of what I believe are the reasons for AM CHAI s spiritual attraction. I look forward to greeting all of you at our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services. Membership Bob Miller This summer, our lawns and the local crops have all suffered from a terrible drought. In fact, our grass has been kugel-brown since about June. (OK, I don't know if a lawn can be "kugelbrown"...but let's just go with the phrase for now.) The long, hot days of summer will soon be turning into the cool, shorter days of Fall and the High Holidays are just around the corner (on September 1 6th). The holidays are a great time to connect with new and old members of the synagogue. If you have a new member that would like tickets, have them go to the Am Chai website ( and fill out the membership information. As a membership coordinator, I take pride in the congregation for a number of reasons. The We have a Rabbi who respects the traditions and laws Congregation has services and programs that of Judaism but goes the extra mile to make Judaism are open to those who were raised in the Jewish relevant to our modern lives tradition as well as those who come from a different background. There are a number of AM CHAI s history is to welcome all who seek the interfaith couples in the synagogue who spiritual guidance, support and camaraderie that a participate in these activities. The congregation closely knit congregation like ours can provide. Where also has low dues and adult education activities someone resides or what they do for a living is not at different member's houses that give members pertinent. the ability to learn and contribute. Despite AM CHAI s modest size, our membership generously supports the activities, events and programs that large Congregations are known for. Our membership fee structure allows anyone to be a part of the AM CHAI family. So as nature has turned on the rain faucets and revived the plants, we encourage you to turn on your "participation" faucet and sprinkle the Congregation with your presence and the presence of your friends this Fall. You will not only help the Congregation grow, your own We know that the New Year can bring both happiness knowledge and relationships will grow...and and sadness to many of our members. We hope you hopefully blossom. will take comfort in knowing that AM CHAI will be there for you and your families both now and in the future. Your loyal membership coordinator, Cindy Placko 3
