2 about the cover: featured jewish artist: Nathan Brutsky - Israeli artist Nathan Brutsky was only 10 years old when his father, a man interested and knowledgeable in art, looked at some pictures his son had made in school and decided that Nathan was talented enough to study art. The son, as all kids, preferred having fun instead of painting. His father, managed to convince the young Tzedakah: Charity The obligation to perform tzedakah can be fulfilled by giving money to the poor, to health care institutions, to synagogues or to educational institutions. It can also be fulfilled by supporting your children beyond the age when you are legally required to, or supporting your parents in their old age. The obligation includes giving to both Jews and gentiles; contrary to popular belief, Jews do not just take care of our own. Contributions: We appreciate the thoughtfulness of those who remember and honor their friends and loved ones through their donations. artist to spend 2 and 3 hours, daily, drawing and painting. He painted everything he saw, without distinction, and from that day on he was rarely seen without pencil and paper. This rich experience turned out to be very vital when, years later, Nathan began to create complex compositions, with multiple elements. This contributes a great deal to explaining Nathan s rare professionalism. 3 Good Jewish Recipes... Grilled Salmon Panini Grilled Salmon Panini is a nutritious brunch or lunch dish that takes only minutes to prepare. Panini recipes are very popular because they lend a tasty crunch to a sandwich. The type of bread used is up to you: panini rolls, tortillas, pita, flatbread or any sliced loaf can be used. Salmon Panini is a complete meal in your hands - enjoy and share with friends. Ingredients: 2 cans Sockeye salmon, drained and bones removed 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup chopped olives 1/4 cup chopped sundried tomatoes 1/8 tsp. pepper 4 panini rolls, thick pitas or your favorite bread 4 large Boston or Bibb lettuce leaves (enough for 4 sandwiches) 4 slices part-skim mozzarella cheese Oil or salad dressing to coat bread for grill, if desired Preheat a grill pan to medium or heat up your panini maker. Blend salmon with mayonnaise, olives, tomatoes and pepper. Place 1/4 of the salmon mixture in the centre of the roll, pita or bread slice. Top it with a slice of cheese and lettuce. Lay top piece of bread over the ingredients. Brush outside of sandwich with oil or dressing, if desired. Place sandwich in panini maker and once the bread has grill marks, the sandwich is ready. If you are using a grill pan, heat the sandwich until it is golden brown on each side. Press down with a spatula occasionally and once the cheese is melted, the sandwich is ready. Eat as is or cut into wedges. Serves 4.
4 Hadassah Hadassah Book Club Hello readers, Come join our Book Club. Our next meeting is Sunday, June 9th at 10:00 AM. We will discuss Jerusalem Maiden, a novel by Talia Carner. In the waning days of the Ottoman Empire, a young orthodox Jewish woman in the holy city of Jerusalem is expected to marry and produce many sons to help hasten the Messiah. Esther understands her obligations, but her artistic talent inspires her to explore worlds outside her religion. Come help us discuss Esther s desires. 6 other stuff... Hebrew Cemetery News Letter from Brownsville A Rabbi Visits Brownsville 1882 The letter in the previous shofar was written in Rabbi Blum from Galveston paid a circuit visit to Brownsville in Below is his letter which I have paraphrased for length. To The Jewish Messenger, New York, January 27, 1882, From Rabbi Blum: When we Texas ministers met in order to carry out the wish of the U.O.A.I. (Union of Orthodox American Israelites), in regard to circuit preaching and I was assigned to the Gulf Coast, I never thought that my trip to Brownsville and Matamoros would be one of the most pleasant reminiscences of my life. I can never forget the happy faces of the men, women and children who came to join me in prayer on Friday night and Saturday at the Masonic Hall. Mr. G. Marks, a whole-souled Israelite who has lived in Matamoros for many years, has a Sefer Torah in his house. When the services are to be held in Brownsville, Mr. B. Cain, brother-in-law of Mr. Marks, carries the Torah over from Matamoros to the Masonic Hall. The guards at the customhouse in Mexico allow the Torah to cross as they say that they are afraid to touch the Jewish God. Brownsville and Matamoros together number about fifty Jewish souls. The Israelites have a benevolent society with nineteen members and own a beautiful burying ground. This society has done a great deal of good and the Sunday School is under its auspices. The Israelites rank very high in social position. Mr. L. Cowen of the business Bloomberg and Raphael Wholesale Merchants is Grand Master of the Masonic Order and the zealous superintendent of the Sabbath School. Dr. A. Wolff, a Jewish physician, has held the post of quarantine officer for several years and is also surgeon at Fort Brown. Mr. Benjamin Kowalski, an intelligent young man, is notary public and his brother is county treasurer. There are several more Israelites who are highly esteemed merchants; one, Mr. Bollack, is a member of the city council. The idea which prevails that life is rough on the Mexican Border and that one s life is in danger, is false. The people are peaceful on both sides; only now and then a man is waylaid when he makes a show of carrying plenty of money. I take pleasure in stating that the Israelites of Brownsville and Matamoros are very hospitable, and vied with one another to make my stay pleasant and happy. I had to bid goodbye to so many kind friends because my duties called me home again. I hope ere long to be able to see all again. Yours, Rabbi Abraham Blum, Temple B nai Israel, Galveston, Texas Note: Dr. A. Wolff, Mr. Benjamin Kowalski, Mr. Bollock and Mr. B. Cain are buried in the Hebrew Cemetery.
