8 Helping your Child with Understanding of Number and Number Relationships Research tells us that in mathematics, higher achieving students have a stronger flexibility and understanding of the relationships between numbers. In classrooms, educators are working with students to build skills with understanding and connections, to help develop their sense of number as well as learning and remembering facts. This helps them when problem-solving. Think about knowing = 11 simply as a memorized fact...now think about knowing that = 11 because it is a and 1 more (linked to knowing that 10 is an important number). The understanding of this relationship can help a student to think flexibly about 64+27: In the same way, it can be thought about as the 10 (that was made by the understanding of 4+7) and 1 more = 91 As a parent, you can support your child in thinking flexibly about how numbers are related: What other numbers or facts is this connected to? Example: 6 + 7=? This is like the double I know of and then 1 more. What do you know that might help you get there? Example: 7 x 4 =? I remember that 5 x 4 = 20, so then I have to add on two more 4 s, which is 8, to get 28. What is another way that you can know that? Example: 4 x 25 =? I can think about money and know that 4 quarters is $1.00, so 4 x 25 = 100. Coronation P.S. Presents Fame Jr.! As you may have heard, the staff at Coronation, through the amazing leadership of Mrs. Mattin, are putting on a production of Fame Jr. Students are busy rehearsing lines, choreography and preparing props and costumes. Cast members will be able to order tickets first, but starting on May 1st, tickets will be available to the general public. To accommodate everyone, there will be four shows. There will be a matinee and an evening performances on Wednesday, May 17th and Thursday, May 18th. Please plan to attend one of the performances of this amazing musical experience, and support the talented students here at Coronation. If you would like to help with this production, please contact Mrs. Mattin at Stephanie.Mattin@ddsb.ca.

9 ARRGG...there are some pirates here at Coronation! CORONATION S CROSS FIT TRAINING At Coronation, our students are offered many sports and activities which promote healthy living. One of our after school activities is Cross-Fit training. Mr. Johannsen, Mr. Petrarca, and Mr. Durning, have been leading students through a series of activities to build strength and endurance.

11 Fidgets Tools: How They Help With Self Regulation Fidget tools are self-regulation tools to help us with focus, attention, calming, and active listening. Fidgets are objects we touch or play with when we experience good or bad stress. The tools come in all different shapes, sizes, and textures and are often referred to by various different names. The fidgets have different characteristics that provide different pressures and sensations to the nervous system. Moving or manipulating these objects helps us to manage stress from different situations because the movement helps regulate, or balance out, our sensory systems. Benefits of a Fidget Tool in the Classroom: supports self-regulation improves attention to task supports thinking and reasoning skills can help avoid fight or flight or sensory overload helps a child from sensory seeking via others (such as pinching, squeezing, hitting) Examples of Fidget Tools: stress balls silly putty play-doh zippers beanbags

12 April 9th Palm Sunday (Christian) April Dates of Significance Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels. In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, yew, willow, and olive. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday. *April 10th to 12th - Pesach (Passover 1st two days) (Judaism) Pesach commemorates the departure of the Israelites from Egypt and from slavery. In the Jewish diaspora, the first two and last two days are holidays when no work should be done. As with all Jewish holidays, the day begins at sundown of the previous day. The first two days are marked by a special meal (seder) with symbolic foods and in which the story of the exodus is recounted. During this week, the observant eat no leavened bread and remove all leaven (chametz: yeast or other fermenting agents) from their dwellings. Instead of leavened products, matzo is eaten. April 13th Holy Thursday (Christian) Holy Thursday is the most complex and profound of all Christian observances, saving only the Easter Vigil. It celebrates both the institution by Christ himself of the Eucharist and of the institution of the sacerdotal priesthood (as distinct from the 'priesthood of all believers') for in this, His last supper with the disciples, a celebration of Passover, He is the self-offered Passover Victim, and every ordained priest to this day presents this same sacrifice, by Christ's authority and command, in exactly the same way. The Last Supper was also Christ's farewell to His assembled disciples, some of whom would betray, desert or deny Him before the sun rose again. April 14th Baisakhi/Vaisakhi (Sikhism) This date is the most important date in the Sikh calendar and commemorates the date in 1699 when Guru Goind Singh Ji, the 10th Guru removed the clerical system and founded the Khalsa Panth. (The Fellowship of the Pure). He instituted the distinctive Sikh clothing and headdress and instituted the 5 Ks that Khalsa Sikhs must wear--kesh, unshorn hair; Kangha, the wooden comb; Karra, the iron (or steel) bracelet; Kirpan, the sword; and Kachera, the special undergarment. He also gave the name Singh (Lion) to all male Sikhs and Kaur (Princess or Lioness) to all female Sikhs. April 14th Good Friday (Christian) Good Friday is the day that commemorates the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ by Roman crucifixion for all humankind, and is one of the most observed days of the Christian calendar. In Canada, it is a statutory holiday, and most churches will hold a service to commemorate Good Friday. For some Christians, this service is a time of mourning, while for others it is a time of celebration because of the redemption accomplished by Jesus s death, and in understanding that his death was not final. April 16th Easter Sunday (All Christianity) This day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ which occurred 3 days after his crucifixion. It is the most important day in the Christian calendar celebrating the most important event in the Christian faith. Christians believe that through the resurrection, Jesus conquered death on behalf of all humankind and made a way for all those who believe in him to experience eternal life after death with him. The faithful will often declare He is risen, to which the response is He is risen indeed. This day also begins the fifty day period culminating at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was given. April 20th First Day of Ridvan (Bahá'í) Ridvan commemorates the 12 days that Baha u llah spent in the garden of Ridvan when he first declared himself to be the one announced by the Bab. On the first (April 20th), ninth (April 28th) and twelfth (May 1st) days of Ridvan, work should not be done. These days are usually observed with community gatherings for prayer and celebration April 28th 9th Day of Ridvan Baha is often celebrate the ninth day of Ridvan with outdoor activities like picnics, games and hikes, enjoying the beauty of lakes, rivers and oceans as a reminder of Baha u llah s momentous Declaration on the shores of the Tigris.
