1 About the booklet About the Author Mohammad Shaikh is a public speaker on Islam and comparative religion. His lectures are based on Qur anic textual inflection serve to remove numerous misconceptions, present authentic Islamic beliefs and appeal for a rational and objective analysis of the Qur an instead of a traditionally biased one. Without taking political or sectarian sides, he calls people to understand and analyze what the Qur an has to say about a subject first and foremost, as it is the Qur an which is the Islam s principal authoritative text and Allah s word and revelation to humankind. 2 INTRODUCTION The aim of this booklet is to introduce the reader to the topic from the Qur an. It can be studied on its own and it also complements the video lecture of the same topic which accompanies it. The booklet contains ayaat (Qura nic verses) pertaining to the topic as discussed in the video lecture in a question and answer format. Questions are raised, and their answers are given by the ayaat. The ordering and numbering of the ayaat corresponds with those on the lecture which can be downloaded from the video lectures section of IIPC website: The Qura nic references provided herein are not exhaustive but offer the core essence of the subject. The references that have been excluded in this publication can be researched using any good concordance and it will be discovered that the selection introduced in this publication will harmonize the entire sequence. It is hoped that Muslim readers will memorize these ayaat along with their Arabic text and engage in Da wah (propagation of Islam) to their friends and colleagues, and also be able to recite the same in their Salah (prayer). In this manner, the booklet becomes a useful tool for everyday Muslim practice - Insha Allah. 5 AL-BAQARA And when his Lord put Ibraheem (pbuh) to trial with words, then he completed them. He said, surely I am making you imam / leader of mankind. He said, and from my offsprings? He said, My promise will not reach the oppressors. MARYAM And remember Ismaeel (pbuh) in the book, surely he was truthful of the promise and he was a messenger, prophet. AS-SAFFAT 37 AS-SAFFAT O my Lord, grant for me from the correct ones So when he reached to make an effort/endeavour with him, he said, O my son, surely I saw in the sleep that I am slaughtering you, so view it, what you see? He said, O my father, do what you are being ordered. Then you will find me If Allah wills from those who have patience. 101.So We gave him the good news of a tolerant / forbearing boy. 12- ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS FAITH. GENESIS He (ISMAEL) will be a wild man, and his hand will be against every man, and every man s hand against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. GENESIS And they came to the place which God had told him of and Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10- And Abraham, stretched forth his hand and took knife to slay his son. 12- And he said, lay not thine hand upon the lad neither do thou anything unto him, for now I know that thou fearest God seeing thou has not withheld thy son, thine only son from Me. AS-SAFFAT When both of them submitted, and he (Ibraheem pbuh) elevated him (Ismaeel pbuh) for the front. AL-BAQARA And when We made the house a place of reward and safety / security for people. And you take the place of salah / prayer from the standing place of Ibraheem (pbuh). And We took a pact / covenant forward Ibraheem (pbuh) and Ismaeel (pbuh) that both of you should purify My house for those who go around and those who intent upon and those who bow, prostrate. 13- And Abraham, lifted upon his eyes and looked, and behold behind him, a ram caught in a thicket by his horns and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son. Elevate: Raise to a higher place or position, office, rank, spiritual level. To promote, exalted, a higher level in some respect. 5 6

GENESIS This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee, every man child among you shall be circumcised. 14- And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people he hath broken my covenant. AL-FATEH Without doubt Allah confirmed the vision of His messenger with truth. If Allah wills definitely you will enter the sacred / forbidden mosque in security your (haircut) heads shaved and (salah / prayer) curtailed / shortened. You do not fear so He knew what you did not know then He made besides that a near / close opening / victory. AL-BAQARA And when Ibraheem (pbuh) and Ismaeel (pbuh) raised the foundations / principles from the house, our Lord, accept (the sacrifice) from both of us. Surely You are the Listener, the Knower. 7 8

8 AL-BAQARA Our Lord,make both of us muslims / submitters for You and from our offsprings muslim / submitter nation for You. And show both of us our places of reclusion (i.e.mina, Muzdalfa,Arafat) and turn to us surely You are the Returning, the Merciful. AL-BAQARA O our Lord appoint in them a messenger from them who will recite Your ayats / signs on them and he will teach them the book and the wisdom and justify them. Surely You are the Mighty, the Wise. IBRAHEEM O My Lord, make me one who establish salah / prayer, and also from my offsprings, our Lord, and You accept my call. AS-SAFFAT And We called him that O Ibraheem (pbuh). 41. O our Lord, have forgiveness for me and for my parents and for the believers when the day of account is established Without doubt you have made the vision true. Surely like that We reward those who are good doers. 106.Surely this is a clear trial. Reclusion: A condition where one is cut off or apart from the world for religious obligations. 107.And We redeemed him with a great sacrifice. 9 10

9 AL-MAIDA Surely those who reject, if they had everything what is in the earth and the like of it with it that they redeem with it from the punishment on the day of judgement, it would not be accepted from them. And for them is a painful punishment. AL-ISRA And when We said to you that surely your Lord encompasses mankind. And We did not made the vision / dream that We showed you except a fitna / captivation / fascination for mankind and the cursed tree in the Quran. And We frighten them. Then it does not increase them except in great tyranny/unjustly harsh. AL-ANAM And like that for many associates from their associaters have adorned the killing of their children to destroy them and to clothe their judgment on them. And if Allah had willed they would have not done it. So leave them and what they are inventing. IBRAHEEM Do you not see how Allah strikes an example of a good word is like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) in the sky

10 IBRAHEEM It brings forth its fruit at all times, with the permission of her Lord. And Allah strikes examples for mankind so that they may remember. IBRAHEEM Allah will steadfast those who believe with the steady word in the life of the world and in the hereafter. And Allah astrays the oppressors and Allah does what He wants. 26. And the example of an evil word is like an evil tree, it is torn up by the root from the surface of the earth, it has no stability. AS-SAFFAT And We left on him in the others / last. 109.Salam / peace be upon Ibraheem (pbuh). 110.Like that We reward the good doers Surely he was from Our believing servants And We gave him (Ibraheem pbuh) the good news with Ishaq (pbuh), a prophet from those who corrects

11 AL-HIJR He said, do you give me good news on that an old age has touched me, so with what is your good news? HOOD They said, are you amazed from the order of Allah, the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Surely, He is praiseworthy, glorious. HOOD And his wife was standing so she laughed then We gave her the good news with Is haq (pbuh) and from the back of Is'haq (pbuh), Yaqoob (pbuh). POINTS. From the above ayats / signs we came to know that good news of Ishaq (p.b.u.h) was given to Ibraheem (p.b.u.h) and his wife since both of them were in old age. And the good news of Ismaeel (p.b.u.h) was given to Ibraheem (p.b.u.h) not to his wife since only he was in an old age. Mentioned in sura Saffat 37: She said, O alas, do I give birth? And I am incapable old, and my husband is old. Surely this is an amazing thing

12 IBRAHEEM Praise be to Allah who has granted me in big old age Ismaeel (pbuh) and Is'haq (pbuh). Surely, my Lord is the listener of the calls. ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS FAITH. GENESIS Abraham s wife bare him no children and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian whose name was Hager. 02- And Sari said unto Abraham behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing I pray thee, go unto my maid, may be that I may obtain children by her, and he hearkened to the voice of Sari. 37. Our Lord I have settled from my offsprings with a valley without cultivation, near Your sacred house, O our Lord, that they establish salah / prayer, then make the hearts of mankind desirous towards them and give them sustenance from the fruits so that they may be thankful. 04- And he went in unto Hagar and she conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 15- And Hagar bear Abraham a son and Abraham called his son s name which Hagar bear, Ismael. 01. GENESIS - 21 And the Lord visited Sara as he had said, and Lord did unto Sara as he had spoken. 02. For Sara conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him

13 AL-HAJJ And you strive in Allah as the right of His strive. He has chosen you and He has made no difficulty over you in ad-deen / the judgment The millah / religion of your father / ancestor Ibraheem (pbuh). And He has named you (all) muslimeen / submitters from before and in this so that the messenger to be a witness over you and you be a witness over mankind. Then establish salah / prayer and give zakah / justification and hold fast with Allah. He is your protector, so He is the blessed protector and the blessed helper. AL-BAQARA And they say, become hood / lenient / jews or nasara / helpers / christians you will be guided. Say, but the millah / religion of true Ibraheem (pbuh) and he was not from those who associates. 140.Or they say, surely Ibraheem (pbuh) and Ismaeel (pbuh) and Is'haq (pbuh) and Yaqoob (pbuh) and the tribes are hood / lenient / jews or nasara / helpers / christians. Say, do you know more or Allah? And who is more unjust than the one who concealed the evidence he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware about what you do

14 AL-BAQARA And never will the yahood / lenient / jews or the nasara / helpers / christians be pleased with you unless you follow their millah / religion. Say, surely the guidance of Allah, that is the guidance. And if you are to follow their desires after the knowledge has come to you then you would find neither protector nor helper from Allah. AL-MUMTAHINA Without doubt there is for you the most beautiful pattern in Ibraheem (pbuh) and those with him, when they said to their people surely, we are free from you and from what you serve other than Allah. We have rejected you, and there has appeared between us and you, enmity and hatred forever, unless you believe with Allah and Him alone except the saying of Ibraheem (pbuh) for his father, certainly I will ask forgiveness for you and I have no authority from Allah in anything for you. O our Lord, on You is our trust, and towards You we depute / represent, and towards You is our determination

15 AN-NISA Or they are jealous of mankind on what Allah gave them from His bounty? So without doubt We gave the followers of Ibraheem (pbuh) the book and the wisdom and We gave them a great kingdom. AL-ANAM Say, surely my Lord has guided me to a straight way, a judgement established. The millah / religion of true Ibraheem (pbuh) and he was not from those who associate. Questions & Answers 162. Say, surely my prayer and my reclusions (when one is cut off or apart from the worldly activities in religious obligations) and my life and my death are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds That there are no associates for him and I am ordered with it and I am the first of the muslims / submitters

16 AL-BAQARA Surely Safa and Marwah are from the consciousness of Allah. So whosoever perform hajj / pilgrimage of the house or umrah / visit so it is not a sin over him, that he goes around them. And whosoever volunteers better then surely Allah is He who is thankful, knower. ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE JEWS AND CHRISTIANS FAITH. GENESIS Now Sarai, Abram s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2- So she said to Abram, The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her. Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 4- He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. 15- And Hagar bear Abraham a son and Abraham called his son s name which Hagar bear, Ismael. GENESIS Therefore she said unto Abraham cast out this bondwomen and her son for the son of this bondwomen shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaaq. 14- And Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hager, putting it on her shoulder and the child, and sent her away and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-Sheba. 15- When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16- Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, I cannot watch the boy die. And as she sat there, she [a] began to sob. 17- God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18- Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation. 19- Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. Q1. According to the lecture you said that Ibraheem (pbuh) had one wife. Was she Hajra who went between Safa and Marwah? What is the significance of Safa and Marwah? 25 26

17 AL-MAIDA Allah will not catch you with nonsensical / ungrammatical talk in your right and He will catch you with what you fastened / tied the knot in your right and the atonement / amendment / correction is feeding of ten needy persons from an average of what you feed to your family or garb them (i.e. a distinctive of a uniform kind) or liberate / free a slave. Then whosoever does not find (this) then fast for three days.that is an atonement /amendment /correction of your right when you take an oath. And preserve your right. Likewise Allah clarifies His ayats / signs for you so that you may be thankful. Q AL-BAQARA When it is said to them follow what Allah has revealed, they say but we follow what we have found our forefathers over it. What if their forefathers did not use intellect in anything and nor they are guided. Q3. After listening your lecture it seems that our forefathers did not have any religious knowledge or they were all wrong? LEVITICUS 7:2 The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be sprinkled against the alter on all sides. Q2. What is the sadqa of life or redemption for any wrong doings? 27 28

18 AL-BAQARA And complete the hajj and umrah for Allah. So if you are encircled/besieged then seek what is easy (give) from gift / cattles. And do not shave your heads until the gift / cattles reached the place of sacrifice. And whosoever is ill from you or hurt with it from his head so ransom from fasts or charity or reclusions. So when you are in security so whosoever participated / enjoyed then seek what is easy from the gift / cattles... AL-HAJJ That they witness the advantage for them and remember the name of Allah in the days known over that which He has provided them from cattles. So eat from them and feed the distressed needy person.... Q4. If Ibraheem (pbuh) did not slaughter his son physically then what is the significance of Qurbani that is the slaughtering of cattle in Hajj and Eid-ul-Azha? 37. It is not their meat and not their blood that reaches Allahbut the taqwa / guard reaches Him from you. Like that He subjugated /serviceable for you that you greatened Allah over what He guided you. And give good news to those who are good doers
