1 CHAPTER III RESULTS A. Description of Yogyakarta Royal Palace Yogyakarta Royal Palace was built by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono in 1756 at Beringan forest. Yogyakarta Royal Palace is located between Tugu which is located in north of the palace, and Krapyak which is located in south part of the palace with the Code River flowing on its east side and Wigono River on its west side. The palace is also located in a line with Merapi Mountain and the south sea. The Yogyakarta Royal Palace is about 14,000 square meters wide, with a fortress of 4 meters high and 3.5 meters wide surrounding the palace. Yogyakarta Royal Palace is divided into three parts for tourism attraction: ceremony hall or Sitihinggil Lor, Kamandungan Lor or the King s house, and Taman Sari. Ceremony Hall or Sitihinggil Lor is the north part of the palace. In this hall there are thirteen buildings which are Bangsal Pagelaran, Bangsal Pengapit (west), Bangsal Pengrawit, Bangsal Pacikeran, Bangsal Sitihinggil, Tarub Angung, Bangsal kori, Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil, Bangsal Witana, Balebang, Regol Brajanala, Bale Angun-angun, Bangsal Pengapit (east). Kamandhungan Lor is the middle part of the palace. In this part there are two buildings: Regol Srimanganti, and Bangsal Ponconiti. Regol Sri Manganti connects Kamandhungan Lor with Bangsal Sri Maganti. In the past, Sultan used the building as meeting room with his guests. Now, the building is used as the storage of gamelan musical instruments. Bangsal Ponconiti is located in the middle of Kamandhungan Lor. In the past, Sultan used the building as a court. 6

2 7 The third part of the palace is Taman Sari. Taman Sari is the King s garden. In the past, Taman Sari was used as a rest area, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place. 1. Activities during Job Training I did the job training as a tour guide at Yogyakarta Royal Palace from March to April I was placed in the Information Center which is located inside the Bangsal Pagelaran building. Foreign visitors were free to choose whether using a tour guide or not, but I always offered them tour guiding service. Yogyakarta Royal Palace is open at 09:00 a.m. - 02:00 p.m. on Monday to Thursday, 09:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Friday, and is closed on Tuesday. The schedule during the job training was:

3 8 1. First Week On the first week in Yogyakarta Royal Palace, I was led by two senior tour guides: Nursalim and Daliman. First, they explained about proper tour guiding techniques such as speaking in loud voice, and good attitude while guiding or explaining the history of Yogyakarta Royal Palace. Then, they invited me to walk around the palace to see the buildings and know the names of the soldiers there. I took some notes for the names and functions of the buildings. 2. Second Week On the second week, I was given a task to make a resume about what the senior tour guides had explained. After that I was asked to practice the tour guiding activities using English. The seniors pretended to be tourists and I explained the history of Yogyakarta Royal Palace and the functions of the buildings there. The activities took three days on the second week. Then, I started to be a tour guide for local tourists. I did this for four days, practicing what I learned on the first week. 3. Third week On the third week, I was familiar with tour guiding activities and guiding foreign tourists. Around four people asked me to guide them. They were from different countries such as Netherland, Germany, and Australia. There were many questions given by the tourists about Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono family tree or the kings former occupations.

4 9 4. Last Week On the last week, I guided the foreign tourists, and then I asked them about the service given by the tour guides in Yogyakarta Royal Palace and the condition of the buildings there. On the fourth week, I guided about six foreign tourists. C. Guiding Steps There were important steps when I guided at Yogyakarta Royal Palace like introducing myself, explaining the object with smile and louder voice, and giving the time for the tourist to ask me questions about Yogyakarta Royal Palace. I usually started the interaction with the tourists by greeting and asking where they are from. After that, I started explaining a brief history of Yogyakarta Royal Palace. Before explaining more about the places inside the palace, I usually asked the tourists about the last explanation if it was clear enough or not. Each tour usually took about 30 minutes. Below is the route of the tour at Yogyakarta Royal Palace: 1. Bangsal Pagelaran Bangsal Pagelaran was once called Tratag Rambat, with wooden shingle as the roof, after being renovated and named Pagelaran by Hamengku Buwono VIII in The renovation was started in1865 (Javanese year). The year is written as Candrasengkala Panca Gana Slira Tunggal located on the front part of the building. It was completed in The year is written as Suryasangkala Catur Trisula Kembang Lata. Yogyakarta Royal Palace is one of Muslim kingdoms. There are 63 green pillars in the building which is the same as the number of banyan trees around the

5 10 alun-alun utara (north square). The number of the pillars and banyan trees number are to remind people of the age of Prophet Muhammad. 2. Bangsal Pengapit (East) Bangsal Pengapit or usually called Bangsal Pasewakan is located on the right side next to Bangsal Pagelaran. Bangsal Pengapit was used as the meeting room of Kingdom s warlord. Now, this building is used as the storage of soldiers uniform and King s family s daily outfits. Inside the building, there are several statues wearing soldiers uniforms. There are ten Kingdom soldiers: 1. Wirobrojo Soldier 2. Dhaheng Soldier 3. Patangpuluh Soldier 4. Jogokaryo Soldier 5. Prawirotomo Soldier 6. Ketanggung Soldier 7. Mantrijero Soldier 8. Nyutro Soldier 9. Bugis Soldier 10. Surokarso Soldier

6 6 The soldiers were led by a captain called Panji, which had duty to organize and give command to all soldiers. Every Panji was accompanied by a vice Panji. Every team in a troop was led by a Sergeant. All soldiers were led by a Pandega. The highest leader of Yogyakarta Royal Palace soldiers is called Manggalayudha. 3. Bangsal Pengrawit Bangsal Pengrawit is located on the right, inside Bangsal Pagelaran. The king used the building as the place for the governor s inauguration. But, since 1942 in Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII era, this building was not used because the governor position in Yogyakarta Royal Palace has been removed. 4. Bangsal Pacikeran Bangsal Pacikeran has two buildings that are located on the right and left at the southern part of the Bangsal Pagelaran field. These buildings were used as the place of the executors, named Singanegara and Martalulut. Both of them had duty to execute the prisoners in the palace. The execution took place on alun-alun Lora or North alun-alun. The executions were done in the middle of the alun-alun, as a reminder for people not to break any rules. These buildings operated until Most tourists were surprised with what the executors did at that time. Singanegara had a special duty as a beheading executor while Martalulut as a hanging executor. 5. Bangsal Sithinggil This building is located at the south of the Bangsal Pagelaran. Bangsal Sithinggil is the highest building in the palace. The building is used for the King s inauguration ceremony place. This building was also used to inaugurate Ir. Soekarno, the first president of Republic of Indonesia in 17 th December In addition, this building was once used as a place for learning

7 7 activities of the oldest university in Indonesia Gadjah Mada University. This building was renovated by Hamengku Buwono VIII, the first renovation was started in1857 (Javanese year). The year is written as Candrasengkala Panditha Cakra Naga Wani or in1926; the year is written as Suryasengkala Gana Asia Kembang Lata. 6. Tarub Agung This building is located inside Bangsal Sithinggil. The King used this building as the waiting room for the guests. The King also used this building as the place to meditate while looking at Yogyakarta monument. 7. Bangsal Kori There are two twin buildings on the right and left of Tarub Agung, named Bangsal Kori. Now, these buildings are used as the place to put two sets of gamelans when the King s inauguration ceremony is held. 8. Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil This building is located in the middle of Bangsal Sithinggil. The building is used for King s inauguration ceremony. There is Selogilang in the middle of Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil. Selogilang is used as the place to put the throne which is called Dampar Kencana. 9. Bangsal Witana This building is located behind Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil. This building was used as the place of Kingdom s relics when the King s inauguration day was being held. This building was renovated by Hamengku Buwono VIII in 1855 Javanese year. The year is written as Candrasengkala Tinata Pirantining Madya Witana or in 1925; the year is written as Suryasengkala Linungint Kembar Gatraning Ron.

8 8 10. Balebang After explaining about Bangsal Sithinggil, the next building is Balebang. This building was used as the storage of two sets of gamelans instrument, namely Kyai Gunturmadu and Kyai Nagawilaga. Now, this building is used as the mini theater showing ceremonies held by Yogyakarta Royal Palace. 11. Regol Brajanala After giving chances for tourists to watch a custom ceremony video in Balebang, I brought them to Regol Brajanala. Regol Brajanala is a gate which connects Sithinggil Lor yard and Kamandungan Lor yard (King s house). 12. Bale Angun-angun On the west of Bangsal Sithinggil there is a building similar to Balebang which is called Bale Angun-angun. This building was used as the storage of spear relic, named Kyai Suara Angun-angun. 13. Bangsal Pengapit (west) This building is located on the west of Bangsal Pagelaran. The building was used as meeting room of the Kingdom s warlords. Now, this building is used as a gallery with statues showing few traditional ceremonies inside such as circumcision and prince or princess wedding ceremony. In the wedding ceremony part, the statues show Popongan ceremonies. In Popongan ceremony, the bride is being lifted by the groom and someone from the bride s family using their two hands. This activity shows that woman s degree is higher than man s. I usually finished the explanation by asking the tourists about my guiding performance. Those were the steps I did as a tour guide in Yogyakarta Royal Palace. D. Problems when I Guided at Yogyakarta Royal Palace

9 9 After doing the observation on the job training, I got some problems when I was guiding. When the tourist from Amsterdamasked me about Yogyakarta Royal Palace, sometimes I did not understand his English. Then, I asked the tourist to repeat his question slowly. Another problem that I had was when the tourist I guided did not understand the English that I spoke. So, I tried to repeat my explanationslowly until the tourist understood. The last problem was when I guided a group of foreign tourists. Some of them did not listen very well. At that time I spoke louder. So they could listen to me well.
