Exodus Review All Grades From Principle Scripture Reference Lesson 16 God has a plan for our lives. He speaks to us and wants to use Exodus 1-4 us for His glory. Lesson 17 God is powerful. Exodus 7-12 Lesson 18 Thankfulness and grateful hearts. Exodus PERSONAL PREPARATION: Read Exodus 1-4. God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt. How are you leading? Are there areas God is calling you to lead? Are you seeking His will for your life? God has a good and perfect plan for each of us, and He desires to use us to bring Him glory if we allow Him. You can trust Him, since He is with you. Read Exodus God sent the plagues to show His power. There were plagues that the magicians could imitate, just as there are things the world can imitate, but God showed himself to be more powerful than the magicians (and the world). What are some things this world has that keep you from seeing God as powerful and Lord of all? Do you truly believe in His power to do all things? Do you believe that His power can rest on you? When you pray, do you believe that He is powerful enough to do whatever you ask if it is His will? Do you pray with this belief in His power knowing that it might not be His will? Read Exodus Spend time focusing on the Israelites response to God s provision and protection. How does it differ from most of ours today? Do you have a heart of thankfulness or one of discontentment and complaint? Seek God to help you identify areas in your life where there is more grumbling than praise, repent of this, and pray to have a more thankful heart. PLUG IN TIME minutes as the kids begin to arrive Arrive early to check the supplies in the bin and review the lesson. Write today s principle on the whiteboard. Remember to greet all campers upon arrival; meet their parents; welcome and introduce all visitors. Create a welcoming cabin for all campers! Moses Recap Timeline Revised: 10/17 1

Give each camper a piece of paper and have him/her draw or write out everything he/she remembers/has learned about Moses so far this year. This could also be done as a class, using the white board. BIG GROUP Time minutes As you line up, remind campers we are going to have fun as an entire Camp Grace group! We are going to live out GRACE by Glorifying God through worship, Respecting All Leaders, and Accepting Responsibility to listen with attentive ears, minds, and hearts - fully Celebrating Christ with passion! We should Encourage Others to do the same, by not distracting them from their worship of God. *Take your cabin flag to Big Group. The Bridge to Small Group Today we will review what we have learned about Moses and the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. We will see how God had a plan for Moses and for His people and how His plan was carried out. Small Group Time minutes Getting Started If your cabin did well in Big Group, acknowledge it. If not, take a couple of minutes to talk about how they can do better next time. Today we are going to review what we ve learned from the book of Exodus. Who wrote the book of Exodus? (Moses.) Is Exodus in the Old or the New Testament? (Old it is the second book of the Bible.) From Lesson 16 Principle to Reinforce: God has a plan for our lives. He speaks to us and wants to use us for His glory. God kept his promise to Joseph and made the Israelites into a great nation; they filled the land of Egypt. There were so many of them that Pharaoh became fearful the Israelites would overpower the Egyptians. had than war Exodus 1: Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he done. 9 He said to his people, Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger we are. 10 We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don t, and if breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country. Why was Pharaoh afraid? How did he react to his fear? (Allow time for answers.) First, Pharaoh and his people made the Israelites their slaves. They were very mean and unfair to the Israelites, making their lives incredibly hard. But the Israelites continued to have children and spread across the land. So, what did Pharaoh do next to try to keep the Israelites from growing even larger in numbers? (He ordered all the baby boys to be killed as soon as they were born.) Did the midwives obey him? Why or Revised: 10/17 2

why not? (Allow time for answers.) No, they didn t. The midwives loved and feared God, so they allowed the baby boys to live. Pharaoh then gave an order to all his people to throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile River. It was at this point that a very special baby was born. What did that baby s mother do with him to protect him when he was born? (She hid him for three months. And then, when she could hide him no longer, she put him in a basket and put it in the reeds of the Nile River.) What happened to the baby next? (Allow time for campers to share what they remember about what happened when Moses was found and pulled from the water. Pharaoh s daughter found and took the baby and had a Hebrew woman come to nurse him. The woman was his mother! When he was older he was taken back to Pharaoh s daughter, the princess, to be her son. She named him Moses, which means to lift out, because she lifted him out of the water.) We can see that Moses was special because God had a plan for him. Moses was saved from death and taken to live with the princess as her son. Years passed and the Israelites still suffered as slaves. They cried out to God for help and God remembered His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God appeared to Moses as a burning bush. When Moses moved closer to see why the bush was not being burned up by the fire, God spoke to him. Exodus 3:9-11 [NLT] 9 Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them. 10 Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt. 11 But Moses protested to God, Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt? God was faithful to His people. He had a plan to use Moses to lead the Israelite nation out of Egypt. Why do you think Moses was afraid of God s plan to use him? (Allow responses.) He didn t think he was strong enough to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. But, God responded. Do you remember what He told Moses? (Allow time for responses. God promised Moses that He would be with him. God was confident in using Moses for this mighty task because He had His plan for Moses mapped out before Moses was even born! But Moses still felt small and afraid and kept bringing up different reasons why he could not do the job.) Why Me? Supplies: White board The purpose is to see how we allow things to get in the way of doing God s will. Write God s Will for Us on the top left side of the white board. Ask campers, What are some things we know God wants us to do? Write responses on the left side of the board (worship Revised: 10/17 3

God, love others, obey my parents, love my brother and sister, pray, be kind to others, trust God, read the Bible, respect my teacher, share my faith, forgive others, be thankful for what God has given me, give to others in need, don t worry about anything). God wants us to do these things because He wants us to follow Him and trust in His plans for our lives. Write What Keeps Us From Doing God s Will on the top right side of the board and ask the class, What keeps us from doing what God wants us to do? Write those responses (fear, confusion, feeling of inadequacy, pride, stubbornness, selfishness, etc.) on the right side. Tie It Together Just like Moses kept coming up with reasons why he couldn t do God s will, we often make excuses to explain why we don t obey God. But God told Moses that He would be with him and there was nothing Moses could not do. All Moses needed, and all we need, is to have God with us, and we can do anything according to His will! God has a plan for each of us that He created before we were born and He is there to give us everything we need to follow His plan. All we have to do is put our faith and trust in Him. We may feel things like fear, confusion, or doubt as we learn more about what God s plan is, but we know that God is always with us and He is all we need. God wants to use each of us to share His love with those around us. If we seek His will and make ourselves available to what He wants for us, He can use us to bring glory to His name. He gives us different tools to use to discover what He wants for us. These tools include: prayer, the Bible, and counsel from others. We were created to worship Him, and He wants us to live for Him by seeking His will in our lives. From Lesson 17 Principle to Reinforce: God is powerful. Moses was fearful and doubtful and questioned God over and over. He didn t think he could do what God asked of him. But Moses could not stop God s plan, and in the end God allowed Moses to take his brother, Aaron, along to help him fulfill God s commands. Exodus 7:1-6 1 Then the Lord said to Moses, Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh, and your brother, Aaron, will be your prophet. 2 Tell Aaron everything I command you, and Aaron must command Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his country. 3 But I will make Pharaoh s heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 Even then Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will bring down my fist on Egypt. Then I will rescue my forces my people, the Israelites from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment. 5 When I raise my powerful hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord. 6 So Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded them. Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt to give Pharaoh one message: Let the people Revised: 10/17 4

go! No matter what they said or did, Pharaoh always said, No! Why was Pharaoh s heart stubborn? (Allow time for responses. He was a sinner who was proud and selfish. God hardened Pharaoh s heart so that the amazing signs He was going to perform would be even greater and to show His power even more.) Pharaoh used his magicians to copy the plagues to try to prove that God was not Lord of all. The magicians were only able to copy a few of the plagues, though. God was more powerful. The first three plagues were sent to all of Egypt, and the last ones only to the Egyptian people. God kept the Israelites safe. Through the plagues, God showed His awesome power and proved Himself as the one true God, Lord of all. After the first nine plagues, Pharaoh still refused to let the Israelites go, so God sent a plague that was so powerful it made Pharaoh force the Israelites out of Egypt. Do you remember what this plague was? (Allow time for answers before reading the passage below.) Exodus 11:1, Then the LORD said to Moses, I will strike Pharaoh and the land of Egypt with one more blow. After that, Pharaoh will let you leave this country. In fact, he will be so eager to get rid of you that he will force you all to leave. 4 Moses had announced to Pharaoh, This is what the LORD says: At midnight tonight I will pass through the heart of Egypt. 5 All the firstborn sons will die in every family in Egypt, from the oldest son of Pharaoh, who sits on his throne, to the oldest son of his lowliest servant girl who grinds the flour. Even the firstborn of all the livestock will die. 6 Then a loud wail will rise throughout the land of Egypt, a wail like no one has heard before or will ever hear again. 7 But among the Israelites it will be so peaceful that not even a dog will bark. Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites. The final plague made the Egyptians fear God and His power, but God gave the Israelites a way to protect their sons. What was this plan? (Allow time for answers - 1) take a perfect lamb; 2) sacrifice it; 3) wipe its blood on the doorframe; and 4) stay inside all night and prepare a special meal. The blood on the doorframe showed that the family had faith in and trusted God and these people would be saved.) God provided this way to be safe but the Israelites had to choose to follow His commands. They could choose to obey what He asked them to do or disobey. I Have A Choice The purpose is to show the campers that they have a choice to obey God. Supplies: Situations (below) Have the campers decide whether each situation below shows obedience or disobedience to God. If it shows obedience, have them stand. If disobedience, have them sit. (You can make up other scenarios, as time allows.) Revised: 10/17 5

1. Your mom asks you to set the table but you don t feel like it, so you pretend like you didn t hear her. 2. You work on a project at school with a friend. You like your ideas better than your friend s and you just want to do it your way. 3. Your mom asks you to clean up for dinner. You immediately put a bookmark in your book and go wash your hands. 4. Your cabin leader asks you to stop drawing so you can focus on the lesson. You immediately put your crayon down and pay attention. Tie It Together Like the Israelites, we also have a choice to obey God s commands. Just as God gave a perfect lamb for the Israelites to sacrifice so the plague of death would pass over them, God has provided the perfect Lamb for us - Jesus. John 1:29 says Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! In John 3:16, we read, For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God gave His first and only Son to die so we would not die, but have eternal life. What choice gives us eternal life? (Allow responses.) Believing in God by having faith and trusting in Jesus as our Savior. When Pharaoh let the Israelites go, God did lead them through the wilderness, instead of taking them the shortest and easiest route to the Promised Land. God had a plan to once again harden Pharaoh s heart and have him chase after the Israelites, so he could once again show the Egyptians His power. Pharaoh gathered his troops and went after the Israelites. When the Hebrews saw Pharaoh s army coming, they cried out to Moses, asking why he had brought them there. They said it would be better to be a slave in Egypt than dead in the wilderness. But Moses knew that God had a plan and said, Don t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the L ORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The L ORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. (Exodus 14:13-14 ) (Note to 1 st /2 nd grade teachers: many of the kids have learned this as a memory verse for the past four years in Tree House. Point this out and go over this verse with them. See who remembers the hand motions. Visit the Tree House page at to watch the memory verse video and learn the motions.) God instructed Moses to raise his staff over the sea and divide the waters so the Israelites could walk through the middle of the sea, on dry ground. Exodus 14: Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the LORD opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all that night, turning the seabed into dry land. 22 So the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side! Pharaoh s army followed them into the middle of the sea. The Lord told Moses to Revised: 10/17 6

raise his hand over the sea again, and when he did so, God made the water rush back into its usual place, covering all the Egyptians, leaving no survivors. God s people, the Israelites, had walked through the middle of the sea ON DRY GROUND! Exodus 14:31 31 When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the LORD had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the LORD and in his servant Moses. God is powerful. He wants us to believe Him and what He can do. We can pray to Him about anything, even if it seems impossible. He wants us to believe in His power to do whatever we ask, even if He chooses not do it because it may not be part of His plan. For example, if there is someone in your life who is very sick, do you really believe that God is powerful enough to heal this person if it is His will? Do you pray with the belief that He can heal? Think about your belief in Him and His power to do anything you ask. Do you have that kind of belief in God and His power? If not, what can you do to have that kind of belief? God rescued the Israelites from the tenth plague. He rescued them from Pharaoh s army at the Red Sea. He led them into the wilderness, and away from their previous lives as slaves. And how did they respond? (They complained. They complained about Moses and Aaron. They complained about having no food. They said that it would have been better to be slaves in Egypt than starve to death in the wilderness. They complained about having no water and said it would ve been better to stay slaves than die of thirst.) Was it Aaron and Moses who brought the people to the wilderness? (No.) Who did? (God.) So, when the people were complaining, they were complaining against God, even though He saved them. How do you think this made God feel? (Allow time for answers.) How did God respond? (God remained faithful to His people. He provided them meat and bread to eat, and water to drink. They were not grateful or thankful, but He was faithful to provide for them.) Am I Thankful? From Lesson 18 Principle to Reinforce: Thankfulness and grateful hearts. The purpose is to allow the campers to examine their hearts to see if they are thankful and grateful for what God has given to them. Supplies: White board On the left side of the board, make a list of things that campers have in their lives. On the right side, make another list of things they wish they had. Once the lists are complete, use the Tie It Together to talk them through examining the condition of their heart. Tie It Together Look at the two lists we came up with. Why do you want those things? Do Revised: 10/17 7

you deserve them? (Allow responses.) Out of all of the things on both lists, which of these things do you actually need? Do you deserve any of these things? (Allow responses.) Everything we have is a gift from God. God gave us the greatest gift when He gave His only Son, Jesus, to be the sacrifice that would allow each of us to live with Him always. We don t deserve to have anything, but God has provided eternal life if we decide to put our faith and trust in Him. God wants us to to have thankful and grateful hearts and live lives full of joy and worship Him only. He does not want us to be selfish and expect to be given more. When we are thankful and grateful in our heart, we bring glory to God. Are you really thankful for what God has done for you and given you? How do you show your thankfulness? Thank You Lord! The purpose is for the campers to show what they are thankful for. If your class has already done this activity, use the envelope still in your room. If you did not get to this during lesson 18, then use a new envelope from the bin. Supplies: Large envelope (1 per session) Piece of paper Pull out the large envelope and tell the campers that this will be your Thank You, Lord! keepsake. Each camper will be able to write something they are thankful for on a slip of paper. Have them put these in the envelope. The envelope will stay in the classroom so that each week the campers can add more things they are thankful for. After a month (or however long each cabin wants), the cabin can spend some time reading through all of the things that each one is thankful for. Tie It Together There are many ways we can show our thankfulness to God for all He has done for us. We can pray and tell Him thank you and share with others. Anytime we recognize a blessing God has given us, we should thank Him for it. This envelope will be one way we can show our thankfulness to God. If you ever want to add anything new to the envelope you can, and after a month or two we will pull the envelope out and read all of the things we are thankful for as a reminder of how God has provided for us. It will be an encouragement to see all of the different things we are thankful for, and will remind us to continue to recognize all God has given us! Prayer Time Spend some time in prayer with your campers, asking God to show us how He wants to use us, and giving us the courage to do what He wants us to do. Revised: 10/17 8
