The events of Daniel 3 occur in the 18 th year of Nebuchadnezzar s reign, after Daniel and his three friends had been in Babylon for about 20 years. This is the same year that Nebuchadnezzar burned Jerusalem.
Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
A cubit equals 18 inches or 1.5 feet. The image measured 90 high by 9 wide.
Nebuchadnezzar s golden image that reflected his dream in Chapter 2, was probably wood overlaid with gold.
If the statue were all gold, the weight would be 8,262,806 pounds and 10 ounces of gold. Today, one ounce of gold is valued at $1, One pound of gold would be almost $20,
The golden image was setup on the plain of Dura, southwest of Babylon near the Euphrates River, and rested on a platform of brick or a wooden base.
Archaeologists have found a mound in Dura that is twenty feet high, an exact square of about forty-six feet at the base, that is believed to be the pedestal of this colossal statue.
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
A dedication ceremony was ordered by the king.
Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
Government officials of all the provinces came and stood before the image.
Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,
That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:
King Nebuchadnezzar plans to use the worship of this image as a test of allegiance.
Nebuchadnezzar s grand idolatry plan was accompanied by an orchestra of music that provided unity in worship and song before the image. There is great power in music, both for good and for evil.
And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
The Babylonian world is given two choices: obey Nebuchadnezzar and live; or, disobey him and die in a fiery furnace. The king regarded the refusal to worship the image as both national and spiritual offenses.
Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
When the people heard the sound, there was total and immediate obedience to Nebuchadnezzar s command.
Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.
They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.
The Chaldeans appealed to the king s ego, as well as his claim to deity by saying Live forever as they brought accusations against the Jews.
Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image:
And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
Nebuchadnezzar s decree was part of his pride and arrogance. He had conquered the nations around him militarily, and now demanded spiritual allegiance to unite his kingdom. Disobedience meant death by fire.
There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
These Chaldeans envied the three Jews high positions of authority in the province. They accused them of three things: 1. Not obeying royal authority; 2. Not serving the king s gods; and, 3. Not bowing down to the golden image.

Since Daniel was not present, only three Jews were accused. No explanation is given in the Bible for his absence. Some scholars have suggested these reasons: Daniel served within the royal court and was not required to attend; In the absence of the king, Daniel administered to Babylonian affairs. Daniel may have been abroad taking care of state affairs.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not try to protest or hide in this large crowd. They simply let their light shine by refraining to share in the sin of idolatry.
Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king.
Even though Nebuchadnezzar was very angry, he would give the Jews he had placed in authority, a chance to explain their disobedience to conformity.
Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
Nebuchadnezzar did not accept the accusations. He wanted to know first hand, Is it true?
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
When ready, these Jews faced two options: reconsider their denials and bow down in worship at the sound of the music; or, face immediate death by being burned alive.
Nebuchadnezzar thought nothing of insulting all gods by questioning, Who is that God that can deliver you out of my hand? The only god the king really believed in was himself, due to his many victories in expanding the empire.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not need to answer the king in defense of themselves. They had confidence and faith in God. They were prepared to die and were not going to beg the king for their life or try to strike a deal.
If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
With boldness and ease in faith, the three Jews choose to defy the government and face death. They resolved to accept God s sovereign hand in whatever results might come from their decision.
Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.
Nebuchadnezzar changed his facial expressions to rage. He ordered the furnaces to be heated to the highest possible temperature, to make certain these three Jews suffered for disobeying him.
Babylon used furnaces for smelting and brick making. Temperatures in these kilns could reach as high as 1800 o Fahrenheit.
And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.
The strongest and most valiant men of Babylon were called by the king to bind and throw the Jewish men into the fire.
Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
These three captive Jews were carried helplessly to what seemed certain death.
Therefore because the king s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
The fire prepared to destroy God s servants ended up destroying those who would destroy. These were some of the king s best soldiers that died from the furnace flame.
And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
The furnace had an opening at the top into which Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were cast fully clothed bound with rope, into the fire.
As they fell in, the flames erupted burning their captors to death. The soldiers who fell outside, died of the fire, while those inside continued to live unharmed.
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
The king sees four men walking freely in the midst of the fire with no pain. Though the ropes are gone, they make no attempt to escape.
The king sees Christ, the fourth person in the fire, directly intervening in human form to deliver the three Jews.
Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
The king personally called the servants of God from the fiery flame. He still recognized other gods, but placed the God of the Jews as the Most High.
And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.
All the men who thought they were to witness the power of the gods of Babylon, were surprised by witnessing the power of the God of Israel to preserve the captives. Only the ropes that bound the men were burned.
Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.
Nebuchadnezzar gave glory to God for this miracle, but he recognized that this great God was not his God, but the God of the three brave Hebrews. men.
Nebuchadnezzar sums up the faith and faithfulness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: They trusted in God; They defied the king s command; They were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
God affirmed that the fiery furnace event was a supernatural deliverance by the following: Heat of the furnace; Death of the valiant men who brought them; Witness of Nebuchadnezzar; and, Witness of the nobility.
Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort.
Without doubt the question, Who is that God that can deliver you out of my hand? has been answered.
Nebuchadnezzar now makes a new law. Anybody who says anything against the God of Israel, will be cut into pieces and their homes destroyed.
Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon.
The king promoted them to higher positions of influence in the government. Their promotion served to preserve the Jews for the rest of their captivity.
Chapter 3 foreshadows the events that will occur during the Great Tribulation:
Nebuchadnezzar is like the Antichrist, who forces the whole world into one religion of idolatry. Nebuchadnezzar's image is like the image described in Revelation 13, that the whole world will be commanded to worship. (60 x 6 cubits 666) The fiery furnace is like the Great Tribulation, which will bring great affliction for the Jews.
The three Hebrew men are like Israel, who will be preserved through the tribulation. The executioners who perished are like those in league with the Antichrist, who Jesus will slay at His return. The mysteriously absence of Daniel is like the church, not even present for this time of Great Tribulation.
The prophetic events in Daniel Chapter 3, foreshadow the future end time events of the world, as described in Revelation:
King DANIEL 3 King of Babylon REVELATION Ruler of New Babylon (Rev ) Image King sets up an image for the whole kingdom to worship. Antichrist set up an image for the whole world to worship (Rev. 13:14)
DANIEL 3 Penalty Those who refuse to worship are cast into the furnace. Number Image is 60 x 6 cubits. REVELATION Those who refuse to worship are beheaded. (Rev. 13:10) 666 (Rev. 3:18)
DANIEL 3 Jews Jews defy the king of Babylon and face death. Help Described as one like the Son of God. REVELATION Jews reject image of Antichrist, and flee into Judah. (Rev. 12:6) Return of the Son of God Christ s Second Coming (Rev. 19:16)
