Peace to You BRINGING ALL INTO THE FAMILY THROUGH PEACE Vol. XXXX, Issue No. 11 November 1, 2018 Peace United Methodist Church, Richland Center, WI Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior. As I write this, it is a cool, crisp October morning. The leaves are bright and pumpkins are everywhere. I sure love the fall, but I can t believe it s almost November already. September marked two years since my family and I arrived in Richland Center. I have gotten to know many of you well in the past two years and have made strong connections. Others of you, however, I have only met once or twice, and some of you maybe not at all. This grieves me. A pastor friend of mine, who has many years of experience, once said to me that the most important thing you can do in a new pastorate, is get to know your congregation. I admit that I have not done very well at that in the past year. I ask that you extend to me some grace, just as God s grace is extended to each and every one of us. The pastor s life is quite full of many competing interests and obligations. Having responsibility of two congregations while being a father of two small children can be challenging at times. I have also become more involved in several community organizations, including becoming president of the RCMA. However, this is no excuse for letting visitation and pastoral care fall to the wayside in the ministry of the church. This is a key part of the role of pastor. We have a small but dedicated group of people on our visitation ministry team. This group is led by Tricia Holley, our minister of pastoral care. This ministry is an important priority for the church leadership and for the congregation. We have a very capable and well-trained leader in Tricia Holley. She is theologically trained, more so than many pastors in our state, having a Master of Divinity degree, from Dubuque Theological seminary, with a focus in pastoral care. She works as a spiritual care provider (chaplain) with SSM Health at Home. She is a very capable, well organized, and Spirit filled woman whom God has called into ministry. But I need to stress that she has taken upon this role as a volunteer. She is not paid anything for serving in this role. You might be thinking that having Tricia serve in this capacity is an effort to take responsibility off myself for doing visitation; Not So! As I said above, visitation is a key part of my responsibilities as pastor, and I do not intend to shirk that responsibility. Tricia will continue to assist me by helping prioritize visitation needs, recruiting folks to serve in the visitation ministry, training volunteers for this ministry and coordinating the visitation team s efforts. She and the visitation team will continue to visit folks and care for them, thereby taking some pressure off of me to see everyone so often. In this way, I can be sure to see the folks I must see in a timely manner. It is important to remember that it is the responsibility of the whole congregation, not just the pastor, to care for members of the congregation. I want to encourage everyone to take advantage of our connect cards that are in the bulletins on Sunday mornings. Not only are they used for attendance record keeping, but is also a first line of contact with guests to our church. These cards allow us to be able to follow up with guests in a timely manner, thereby increasing the likelihood that they would return. If guests see you not filling them out, then they won t either. If they don t fill it out, then I have no way of following up with them. If I don t follow up with them after one or two visits with us, they will likely decide to go to another church. So, I want to stress to you the importance of filling out your connect card completely. We also use the connect card to share prayer concerns and joys; those to be lifted up in worship, as well as those we want the prayer ministry team to be praying for throughout the week. I also want to remind everyone that there is a place on the back side of the connect card for visitation needs and/or requests. If you know of

someone who has not been seen by the pastor or visitation team in a while, let us know. If there is someone who is feeling like they have been overlooked and have not been seen in a timely manner, write their name on a connect card in the proper place, and we will see to it they are visited. It does no good to say to us that we are not seeing people like we should, but not give us names. That only causes conflict and hurt feelings. In Exodus 18:13-26, we read of how Jethro advised Moses to appoint helpers in fulfilling his responsibilities as leader and judge of the people of Israel. By doing this he was able to stand the strain, and all the people were satisfied. We read in Luke 10 of how Jesus sends out the 72 disciples, two by two, to do the work of the Lord. Jesus says here that The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Brothers and sisters, the work of the church is much too great for one man, therefore I am grateful that Tricia continues to serve in her capacity as minister of pastoral care. But, the need is great, and the workers are few. If you feel that God is leading you to serve in the visitation ministry, please contact Tricia or myself and let us know. God bless you all and see you soon. Rev. Wiley Gladney GIVING ABUNDANCE: SECURITY IN GOD And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men. (Mark 6:42-44, NRSV) The story of the loaves and the fishes illustrates God s abundance. It also illustrates the often seen configuration of Stewardship attitudes in our churches. The needs of the many are great. It is late in the day and Jesus sees that the people are hungry and takes compassion on them. Then as now, Jesus tells his disciples to feed his people. The leaders are skeptical. The disciples say, There isn t enough. We don t have enough money to buy bread for all these people. A few give generously, sacrificially. In the story, a young boy gives up his entire lunch, a few loaves and fishes. Jesus blesses our gifts and multiplies them in ways that are difficult for us to comprehend. The few loaves and fishes given to Christ and blessed by him turn out to feed 5,000 with baskets of food left over. Trygve David Johnson has noted, That the ministry I serve in Christ pivots not on how much I have or what I can give, but rather on how much God gives by multiplying what I have. Often at this time of year, when our thoughts turn to Stewardship, our churches act as if there is scarcity. Tentatively asking their congregants to give a little from their scarcity. The disciples said, We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish. But, if we have the right Stewardship attitude, then we will experience abundance. Bring me your nothing, ask for my blessing, says Christ, and I will turn it into something. So this year, let us boldly invite people to abide in the Kingdom of Abundance. 3 DAY LIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS! Sunday, November 4 th, is the beginning of Central Standard Time. That means on Saturday night before going to bed, you need to turn your clocks back one hour. You get an extra hour to sleep on Sunday morning. COMMUNION It is accepted that the sharing of spiritual fellowship is important. Coming together at the Lord s Table to share in His body and blood which was shed for us is important. The Sacrament of Communion is one of the most important in the United Methodist Church. Communion is that most special time of sharing. The Worship Ministry would like everyone to recognize and participate in this sacrament by offering to serve as part of the Communion fellowship. The bread and juice would be provided so this would involve once or perhaps twice a year the setting up and clearing the Communion table and assisting in the service of Communion as needed. To volunteer or with questions, please contact Sharon Zales ( ) or Briana Turk ( ), Thank you and God bless you for your prayerful consideration. CANDLE LIGHTERS AND READERS We have openings for candle lighters and readers for our Sunday services. Those dates are December 2 nd, 9 th, 16 th, and the 23 rd. We also need Scripture readers as well as candle lighters and readers for Christmas Eve service. If you would like to help, please call Joan in the office ( ). She will be happy to sign you up. ANNUAL CHURCH CONFERENCE We will be having our Church Charge Conference at Trinity on November 1 st, at 6:30 p.m. Please make sure to attend the Church Charge Conference on the 1 st. The announcement has been in the bulletins and in the newsletter. The Church Charge Conference involves all of the churches in our district of South West 09. Those churches are: Bloom City and Boaz UMC, Avoca and Blue River UMC, Peace and Trinity UMC, Ash Creek and Willow Valley UMC, Lime Ridge and Sandusky UMC. Our District Superintendent Scott Carlson will be the facilitator for the evening. THANK YOU, VETERANS! On Veterans Day, we honor men and women who ve served and sacrificed in one of America s armed services. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies signed a truce with German leaders, ending World War 1. In 1919, President Wilson decided the United States should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor military members by marking Armistice Day, or truce day. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, honoring veterans of every era. Veterans Day highlights our country s quest for peace, justice and freedom throughout the world. Followers of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, pray for unity among all nations and for the day when nation will not take up sword against nation nor will they train for war anymore (Isaiah 2:4, NIV)

MISSION NEWS City of Refuge: Honduras As you know, kids are very active. When they run and play or are just being kids, they wear out their shoes sooo fast! At this point, all of them are having shoe issues. The last time we bought then shoes was January. They are praying for shoes. We told them that God ultimately, has His timing, and we need to have faith. We explain to the children that we need to take care of the electric for the farm, repair the wiring for the baby s dorm and fix the farm Gator. There are so many bills to cover. They are learning that when they prioritize by putting God s business first and have faith in Him as their Father, He will graciously provide for their needs. So, as we lead them in a sacrificial/trust prayer for the sake of the farm, we help them walk into God s provision for them. Please pray, and if God puts it in your heart to help with tennis shoes, school shoes and Crocs. Thank you! The children will be collecting to provide shoes for the months of November and December. If you feel led to help, please do so. Lowell & Claudia Wertz Joy in the Harvest, Tanzania, Africa A Cup of Cool Water When the water department could not pay their electric bill, their water pumps stopped working. This created a crisis that has lasted months. To help some of our neighbors, we have been pumping water from our well and giving it freely to people. Most people have to carry water great distances or buy water from those selling it by the bucket. Workers for the Harvest We are so blessed to have Terry and Ruth Ann Miller helping us in Kigoma for eleven weeks this summer. Terry and Ruth Ann have made five trips to Tanzania to work with us. Terry is a retired mechanical engineer and has worked on the plumbing for all our buildings. They received donations from their two churches to purchase pipe fittings to bring out. He is now completing the permanent water system for our ministry site. It has a 23,000 gallon water tank, 4 pressure pumps, and provisions for a fire hose. Ruth Ann has been helping roll yarn for distribution to the refugee camp and women s groups, and making curtains and quilts. They are dear friends and fellow workers for the Lord. CHILDREN S OCTOBER MISSION: OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOE BOXES As we were going to press with the November issue of Peace To You, our children were still busy collecting money for their shoe boxes. We are sorry, but we cannot give a total at this time. We will give you the total in the December issue of the newsletter. 3RD QUARTER SPLIT The money given in July, August and September for Missions, Fourth Sunday offerings and Fourth Sunday school offerings was split six ways for our Mission Ministry groups. Now, if you are like some of us that don t do either, then please go to a variety store and purchase items for our school children to help see them through the winter months. A number of area stores have most of these items on sale. The Mitten Tree is looking for items like warm caps, mittens, gloves, scarves. Also needed are children s socks (please place in plastic bag), sweat pants in sizes 6, 8 or 10 for the elementary children who have a hole in their snowsuits or don t have a snowsuit to put on and their jeans get wet. The sweat pants would be loaned to the students to be brought back freshly laundered for some else to use. The schools that will receive these goodies in January are Jefferson, Doudna, Lincoln, St. Mary s, Eagle and Riverdale Elementary Schools. The Mitten Tree will be put up on December 2 nd and will be in place through the first Sunday in January. NEW CUSTODIAN Bert Kelsey has agreed to be the new custodian for Peace. Gary Johnston left because he is receiving more hours at The Foundry and felt he couldn t do both jobs effectively. We are sad to see Gary go as he s done a very good job for us. We wish him well with his new position at The Foundry. We welcome Bert as he begins his new job here at Peace. He has been following Gary around, taking notes, asking questions of what to do, received a list of duties and where various things are. A plus for us is that Bert knows his way around the church having worked on various things within the church as a Trustee and when he was in the construction business.

MORE THAN A WREATH AND CANDLES The Advent wreath is a symbol of watchfulness and increasing joy as Christmas approaches. Lighting its candles is a common practice as the four Sundays leading to Christmas. Different color combinations for the candles are used depending upon the church or denomination. Some churches use four blue candles around the wreath with one white candle in the center, while some use all white candles. Many denominations light purple candles on the first two Sundays, pink on the third, purple again on the fourth Sunday and a large white candle on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The wreath, the candles and the colors all have symbolic significance. Here are just a few of the many and various interpretations: 1. The circular green wreath symbolizes the everlasting love of God, having no beginning or end. Green represents eternal life. 2. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. One tradition says that each candle also represents one thousand years. They total 4,000 years the time from Adam and Eve until the birth of Christ. 3. Purple, in ancient times, was expensive and was considered the color of royalty and kings. On Christmas, Christ is proclaimed King of Kings. Purple also symbolizes humility and penitence. 4. Blue is another color often used as a symbol of royalty. Some churches use blue candles to symbolize the night sky and the anticipation of the announcement of Christ s birth. Blue also symbolizes the beginning of new creation as in the waters of Genesis The first purple candle signifies Hope. 6. The second purple candle stands for Peace. 7. The pink candle of the third Sunday symbolizes Joy and signifies the halfway point of Advent. 8. The final purple candle is for Love. 9. The large white candle in the center is the Christ candle. Its light symbolizes Christ the Savior The light of the world. 10. The beauty and brightness from the glow of all five candles is a reminder that Christ s life was the light for all earth s people. SNOW REMOVAL The dreaded white stuff (snow) is starting to be mentioned more and more. Especially with the reports of how much snow has fallen in the mountains out west. We are asking people not to park in the church parking lot over night or before the parking lot has been plowed following a snow fall. Our snow plower will not come in and plow us out if there are vehicles in the lot. In case of lots of snow and the snow plow comes in while your vehicle is in the lot, the church will not be responsible for you getting plowed in or damage to your vehicle. Please note, our church plower comes early in the morning, often before 8:30 a.m.

The Alphonse and Hazel Corner Just hanging around, literally. Boy did we get it from Pam Kintz one Wednesday night! Joan came into the office on Thursday morning and found us attached and upside down on the back door latch in her office. We had to stay there for several days as punishment. We just wanted to help Pam label the new cantata choir books! We were really trying to help but maybe both of us running up and down her legs didn t help. Oh well what mice are going to do. As I m writing this, I m telling Hazel about all the fun we will have at the Potluck and Fall Auction on the 23 rd. I missed it last year because I was in Washington at you know who s cousins home. I told her it was fine but she d need to watch where she was walking so she didn t get stepped on. We have to be careful people wouldn t see us sneaking around and start screaming or get a broom to hit us. Hopefully, no one will see us hiding in the Silent Auction baskets. The Silent Auction baskets look really wonderful. There are a total of 23 baskets this year and boy do those cookies look great! We tried to sample the popcorn, but didn t like the hard kernels. Would prefer popped popcorn. Hint for next year ladies. Someone is telling me to let everyone know the deadline for the December issue of Peace To You will be Monday, November 19 th, at noon. Please have all articles in by that time. It s also Thanksgiving that week and Joan will be gone on Friday as well. She needs to get it ready for printing. Thank You! Now Hazel, let s go check out the candy box. I heard it s been filled up again. Bye everyone. Happy Thanksgiving! The note says: You guys keep out of My Way! THANKSGIVING (Lizelia Augusta Jenkins Moorer) Let us give thanks to God above, Thanks for expressions of His love, Seen in the book of nature, grand Taught by His love on every hand. Let us be thankful in our hearts, Thankful for all the truth imparts, For the religion of our Lord, All that is taught us in His word.
