2 FROM THE PASTOR Easter was such a beautifully warm day it seemed like spring was already here. But then the reality of Minnesota weather set in and since then we ve had a variety of warm, cold, wet, dry, windy and still days. But the promise of spring and the guarantee of Easter resurrection are always with us. It can seem that the season will never change from cold and dead looking to warm and full of life, but it does happen, sometimes ever so slowly. As I walked around the church yesterday I could see that our flowering trees out front have buds on them. Any day now the daffodils out front will be bursting with blooms and a truly incredible sight to behold. For me it is a visible reminder that even though it seems like things will never happen, they eventually do and the reward is worth the wait. God s Blessings and see you in church! Pastor Joyce <>< WORSHIP SCHEDULE FOR MAY 4th Invitation Sunday, Communion, and brunch following worship 11th Mother s Day, children sing, and Love Offering for Annual Conference. 18th Teacher Appreciation, choir sings, and Love Offering for Annual Conference, 25th Memorial Day Sunday CELEBRATING OUR GRADUATES On Sunday June 1st as part of our worship service we will celebrate our graduating High School seniors: Annie Bunger and Joshua Slostad are the youth we are aware of (please call the church office if we missed anyone). They will help lead our service and there will be a reception in their honor following worship. Please let us know of any other graduates from: college, technical, business, or graduate schools. If you are graduating from any school or know of someone, please contact the church office at or let Pastor Joyce know.
3 Save Your Receipts & UPC Codes In case you didn t know the UMW is asking everyone to save their Teals receipts and the UPC codes from any Our Family products. These are turned in for rebates and the money has been used for mission work as well as helping to pay for things around the church. Place your receipts and codes in the labeled box on the counter in the gathering space that s all you have to do. We have earned more than $1000 dollars through this program! Love Offering 2014 received May 11 & 18 The Love Offering for Missions is collected within Minnesota United Methodist churches and delivered to annual conference session May It benefits international, national, and Minnesota missions. The conference Missions Promotion Team determines the annual recipients. Love Offering contributions in 2013 were $92,809. Our 2014 Love Offering will have two components: a cash offering with a goal of at least $120,000 and a feed-the-hungry component with a goal of 1 million meals. The 2014 Love Offering recipients are Feed My Starving Children (which will receive 80 percent), Project Ag-Grad (which will receive 10 percent), and Volunteers in Mission scholarships (which will receive 10 percent). Feed My Starving Children 80% Feed My Starving Children, an Advance Special of The United Methodist Church, provides life-saving meals to people who need them most all over the world from countries affected by natural disaster to places enduring economic despair. Meals have been distributed in nearly 70 countries through missionary partnerships at orphanages, schools, clinics, refugee camps, and malnourishment centers. In addition to supporting hungry children through the Love Offering, the Minnesota Conference is engaged in a "Million Meals Marathon" through which Minnesota United Methodists (and their friends and family) will pack 1 million meals in 2014 through Feed My Starving Children. Funds collected through the Love Offering will help pay for the packing and shipping of the 1 million meals.
4 Project AgGrad 10% The Minnesota Conference initiated Project AgGrad in the 1980s to address the root causes of world hunger in developing countries by providing highly motivated and trained leaders in production agriculture. Project AgGrad selects promising students from developing countries and supports them as they pursue an advanced degree at the University of Minnesota. Upon completing their degree, the students return home to work on food production for the rest of their career. So far, the Project AgGrad program has provided fellowships for six African students to study agriculture at the University of Minnesota. After finishing their studies, the students have assumed leadership roles in their homelands, where they teach, mentor, and conduct research to help eradicate hunger. Volunteers in Mission Scholarships 10% Lives are changed forever when volunteers become involved in service to others. The United Methodist Church's Volunteers in Mission program provides opportunities for teams to spend up to two weeks working on a mission project either domestically or abroad. Most of the Volunteers in Mission teams from Minnesota are engaged in hands-on projects that build the infrastructure to ensure that our nutritional, medical, and educational programs in developing countries become sustainable and locally run. The Minnesota Conference is committed to increasing the number of first-time volunteers who can travel and work in places where we are providing life-saving and life-transforming programs for the world's children. Volunteers in Mission team members pay their own way, which is why scholarships (like the one that the Love Offering will help provide) are so critical. The Love Offering will specifically support scholarships for first-time participants.pay their own way, which is why scholarships (like the one that the Love Offering will help provide) are so critical. The Love Offering will specifically support scholarships for first-time participants.
5 Fish Fry / Raffle Proceeds 2014 Well another fish fry has come and gone this spring and as usual the food was the big hit! Because the fishing season was not good we didn t get as much fresh caught fish donated this year so we relied on purchased fish this year making our costs higher. I want to thank all those who donated and prepared food items for the dinner; Dale Gilbert,(for oil and supplies for salads, cookers, etc.) Toby Henschel and Mary Fuller for cheesecakes, Jeanette Hanenberg for her expertise and supplies. Right now we have grossed $1089 from ticket sales and $250 in raffle tickets making our proceeds slightly lower than last year. However we got some cash donations that went straight into the Fish Fry account, so when all the bills for ads and fish are paid we will update profits and projects for the proceeds the Men s Group / church programs that will be funded. This is about the same as 2012 proceeds and we will look at how we can do better for next year at our next meeting. I also want to thank all the people who donated prizes and items for the raffle. I want to apologize for not being clear that the silent auction items were going to be in the raffle, as this caused people to package things differently than they might have otherwise. We discussed this at our last group meeting, but I missed the boat on this one and all the blame should come to me, hopefully I will be forgiven. Things will be different next year and I hope you will all give of your time and talents next year! Thanks to these Groups: kitchen staff: Jim Fladmoe, John Demaires, Jeff Weiser,Ryan Quinn, Dale Gilbert family (sisters Cindy and Cathy), Arnie Pearson, Jeanette Hanenburg, Don Tolmie, waiters: Bruce Cochran, Phil Anderson, Matt and Peter Slostad, Jim and Adrian Coughlin, William Barnes, Jeff Stobb, ads, raffle, tickets; Treza Neece,Terry Wade, Myla Tolmie, John Day(signs)decorations,Myla Tolmie, Nancy Rockwood, Frank Crooms, Jere & Linda Day,Clean up crew; Frank Crooms (dishwasher extraordinaire) Ron Bowe, John Day, and everybody else listed above! 7 Happy May Day!! What happened to spring we have winter back. Yuk! I hope everyone had a blessed Easter with family. Ours was very nice and the weather was great, always good when you can be with family. April started with us serving the Lenten Soup Luncheon here at the church. The average attendance this year was about 50 people which is about the same as last year. It gets a few less each year. Christian Women on Thursday, April 15th was about 60 ladies that attended. They enjoyed a brunch of hash brown casserole, fruit and a kolache. They are so pleased with whatever we serve them and very thankful to be able to come to our church for their meeting and fellowship each month. It is well worth the work to be able to do this local mission work for them. Our High Tea is April 30th 3-5pm and hope we will have a good turn out with the weather as cool and wet as it is. We will decide what local charities we will be giving the proceeds to at our June meeting. Mary Martha Circle met on the 17th at church and we only had 8 or 9 members there. We meet again on May 15th and our next UMW meeting will be in June. The Big Waters District Spring Gathering is Saturday, May 3rd at Graham UMC at Rice. There are 5 ladies that plan to attend the meeting. I will have more in next month s article what we learned there.
