Newsletter of Morning Star Lutheran Church ~ Missouri Synod Lakeside, California September 2017 See What HE Has Made! I ve learned a lot from my children in the last few months. They ve learned a lot, too. Since we finished the school year, we have gone to swimming lessons, spent time exploring the many things to see and do around this great city, and we spent a week recently discovering many wonders and sites throughout the state of Utah. A beautiful state that we had never been to, we were continually amazed by its landscapes and all that it had to offer. Whether you hiked, drove, swam, or any other method of getting around -- Utah seemed to have it all. While we were there, we made a short stop in Provo and were able to see the solar eclipse of August 21st from that vantage point. It wasn t a view of totality, to use eclipse language, but it gave us a literal and figurative glimpse into the wonder of God s creation. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork (Psalm 19:1 ESV). This verse was on my mind as we watched the eclipse, but also as we spent time in God s creation, both on top of the canyons and at their bases. Does not all of God s creation declare His own glory and might? And not just in the beautiful American West where we live. Travel our country or others, and you will continue to be amazed wherever you go by what our Lord has done. He has ordered the seasons and even our own days, and He cares for you and I personally in the midst of it all. Think of it -- we watch amazing occurrences of nature in the sky or on the Earth, and the same God who created it all knows the hairs on YOUR head! He has guided, protected, and preserved you, and continues to do so. Wherever you go or whatever you do, you are loved and cared for by God who called all of creation into being. So enjoy this upcoming fall and winter season -- those seasons look a little different in San Diego than they do in most parts of the country, but they proclaim God s glory all the same. Celebrate and enjoy what He has made! The Psalmist also writes this is the day the Lord has made, let us REJOICE and be glad in it!. So rejoice. Be glad. And do this knowing that God goes before you, behind you, and guards you on both sides. Genesis 1:14-19 (ESV) And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth. And it was so. And God made the two great lights the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. God Bless you as you serve Him with joy!! ++ Pastor Justin ++

Page 2 A Man Named Martin - This study will begin on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 4:00 PM. Watch Sunday Bulletins for additional dates and details. TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURES TIME What is this all about. As you know, we commit our TTT to the Lord annually, and we do it through the church so they can formulate a church plan for the calendar year. So that full participation can be had, we suggest a cottage meeting to provide the survey to each communicant member of Morning Star. Why is it called a cottage meeting? Well, that is my name for it. You however may call it your home, bungalow, recreation building, or back yard. I will refer to it as a cottage meeting for this survey s purpose. What does one do at this meeting? During this cottage meeting the host will explain each line item so you will be familiar with what you may be volunteering for. The survey is not written in stone as you may have an idea that is beneficial and not listed, while remembering that we are all part of Christ s team, The Body of Christ! The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, open up the doors and see all the people. We the people are the church, the Body of Christ, each individual is a member of it. Why are we doing this when everything is running along smoothly? It would run much smoother if there were more volunteers, because it takes an army of workers to support just one person in battle. We are in a spiritual battle each day, and we must lean on each other, support one another, after all with our gifts of our time, our talents, and our treasures, all that is freely given to us from God, Our Creator, our Sustainer, our all. The survey will be provided to each communicant member at the individual meeting/s. This is a great opportunity to volunteer to be a host family for the cottage meetings. Meetings will be held in September and October of If you would consider being a host for one of these meetings, contact Jim Birren.

Page 4 Porals of Prayer Start your day----end your day----take a break in the middle. No matter when You need it, Portals of Prayer inspires you to live each day in Jesus name. Each devotion is about 5-10 minutes and includes a Bible reading, devotion, and short prayer. There are also prayers in the book for special days, i.e. morning & evening days of the week, birthdays, prayers for the ill, holidays and many more. An example of one day s devotion: Separation in and of itself is not always bad we may desire to be alone sometimes. But when separation is not a choice but rather the inevitable result of suffering, that s different. Both suffering and separation yield heartache and grief. When suffering separates us from those we love, there is longing and loneliness. When suffering separates us from what is safe and secure, there is fear and helplessness. When suffering separates us from God, there is anguish of mind, spirit, and soul. Whatever our need is, God s presence is always there, giving us strength and staying-power. When we find ourselves sinking into sadness or suffering now or in the future, we can find comfort in the fact that the lower we sink, the deeper our God bends down to lift us up and embrace us with His care and love. Nothing will ever be able to separate us from God s love. That marvelous, all-encompassing doxology is both fact and faith. We have experienced God s presence, and we believe the promise that it will always be. (There is a scripture to read, a verse for the day, and a prayer at the end of this devotion.) Our church provides, free of charge, three different sizes: Pocket (4 1/8 x 5 ¾) Digest (5 ¼ x 8 ¼) Large Print (8 ¼ x 10/ ¾) These are all in English, but we can order a Spanish version in the pocket. (See Char Collingwood.) If you would like to take one for yourself, and perhaps for a friend, you can find them on the literature table in the fellowship area. Also, if you would like to subscribe, there is a Kindle or ibooks version; an APP version or Google Play. Go to: cph.org/portals-of-prayer GriefShare will begin on October 21, 2017 and will end on February 17, GriefShare is held on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. meeting in Room 4. (We will not be meeting on the weekends of the holidays. We will not be meeting for Thanksgiving weekend and the weekends of Christmas and New Year's.) One of our Saturdays will feature GriefShare's "Surviving the Holidays" which will be presented on November 18, 2017, before Thanksgiving. These two programs are featured on DVDs that explain what is going on in the life of someone who loses a spouse or family member and how to deal with the loss from a Christian perspective. If you are not able to make it for the first session, you can participate at any point of this support group. My wife, Chris, and I have facilitated GriefShare groups for over 14 years and are blessed with each new group that we meet. I am a licensed Deacon and I assist at Morning Star Lutheran Church. We have made many new friends and are privileged to watch how our Lord Jesus Christ touches each individual, as they go through their transition of mourning to His promised Joy. For questions or more information, please contact Tom Kuwazaki at or by tkuwazaki_mslc@cox.net or for more information about GriefShare go to website:

Page 5 There is a great deal of truth when you play the game of sharing information and when you pass it on from one person to the next you may end up with a totally different message than the original. Well, that has happened with me on the story behind Because He Lives. I remember from somewhere that Gloria Gaither wrote this song in remembrance of her father when he passed away. As you will see from the article below I totally missed the right information. (Originally published in The Worshiper, Fall 05) With Gloria Gaither The Gaithers are foundational voices in the world of Christian music. Authors of devotional classics He Touched Me, There s Something About That Name and countless others, Bill and Gloria were named Songwriters of the Century in 2000 by ASCAP. When someone asks, How long does it take you to write a song? Gloria comments, I usually say, Ten minutes and 30 years. It comes out of the cauldron of your life. Because He Lives is a perfect example. In The Shadows We had written a lot of songs, but we were just at a dry spell, Gloria recalls. Bill s sister was going through a divorce, and we d never had divorce in either of our families. It was very painful because she was in trouble and in a situation that was quite volatile and could have been dangerous. Bill got mononucleosis at that same time and became physically weak. There were circumstances in our life we couldn t control. There we were so happy, yet we had this contradiction of things that we couldn t fix. There was the paradox of writing about peace and joy and contentment in the face of this, asking, How does all this work? Swirling around them was the unrest of a generation in the midst of war. It was Gloria explains, Our whole life and the external world were all in flux and in chaos: the Civil Rights movement was going on, Watts had just burned to the ground, and the whole country split apart over the Vietnam War. We d just found out we were having our third baby and thought, Who would bring another baby into this world? We were disturbed by the whole thing. He Touched Us Story Behind Because He Lives But a wonderful friend, Sid Guillen, came over one night, Gloria continues. This is an imposition of Satan this is not just circumstantial, he said. I m going to lay hands on you and pray for you. He just had that simple faith, and something in the Spirit broke after that. Nothing we could see changed at that moment, but we did feel again that God was in control. And when our little son Benjy was born [July 19, 1970], we actually felt incredibly confident. It dawned on us that the Resurrection is a true thing. It s true in every situation. It s true in the world to come. God s got a plan. Resurrection is a fact of life and I think it was built into the earth as a metaphor for Christ in the very beginning of Creation. It s the principle that life wins. If we put our trust in Him, we are victors. What if the world blows up tomorrow? Our destiny and our life and our future do not depend on circumstances. This song has that sense. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives. But greater still the calm assurance, This child can face uncertain days because He lives. Continued on Page 6

Page 6 Story Behind - Because He Lives - continued from page 5 The Truth of Resurrection Gloria wrote the verses just to make the song complete and provide perspective, although they weren t necessarily connected to anything she was experiencing at the time. But when her father died suddenly, the song s third verse came alive for her. At a concert that evening, Bill s brother Danny, the third member of the trio, began to sing: And then one day I ll cross the river, I ll fight life s final war with pain. And then as death gives way to victory, I ll see the lights of glory and I ll know He lives. It was as though I had never heard it before, Gloria shares. The truth of Resurrection poured in and I could hear my father saying, To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. That s how personal that song is. Today, Because He Lives has become a personal gift for Christians around the world. Of all the hundreds of songs written by the Gaithers, it s the only one that has been translated into every language. Join me in giving Praise and Glory to our Living God Jesus Christ! I m so grateful that He is always faithful and leads us into all truth. Praying for your forgiveness in initially giving all of you wrong information. Verse 1 God sent His Son they called Him Jesus; He came to love heal and forgive. He bled and died to buy my pardon; An empty grave is there to prove, My Savior lives. In Christ s Love and service, Tom Kuwazaki (See below the lyrics for Because He Lives.) Because He Lives Verse 2 How sweet to hold a newborn baby; And feel the pride and joy he gives. But greater still the calm assurance; This child can face uncertain days. Because He lives. (Chorus) Chorus Because He lives I can face tomorrow; Because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future; And life is worth the living. Just because He lives. Verse 3 And then one day I'll cross that river; I'll fight life's final war with pain. And then as death gives way to vict'ry; I'll see the lights of glory. And I'll know He lives. CCLI Song # Gloria Gaither William J. Gaither 1971 William J. One day she heard a song she liked on the radio, she didn t know she was listening to Encouragement for You, a program produced by LHM-Thailand. The radio host talked about Jesus, but Ngam had no idea who Jesus was. Then the host invited listeners to contact LHM s team in Thailand to discover more about the Bible. Ngam felt an irrestible urging inside she decided to participate in a Bible Correspondence Course. Through the course, Jesus worked in Ngam's life. It is helping me get to know God and how to follow him, she says. I m very thankful to your ministry. Today, Ngam s life is completely changed. LHM-Thailand helped her find a local church and she is preparing to be baptized. As her faith grows, she asks the LHM family for prayers as she seeks to help her family know Jesus. LHM-Thailand shares the Good news every day through the radio and invites people in need to respond. LHM creates this kind of impactful radio ministry in more than 80 languages worldwide. Ultimately, you make it possible! God uses your gifts and prayers to touch the hearts of people like Ngam with His love. In Thailand, every $9 towards radio ministry represents someone responding to learn more about the Gospel. Reprint by permission of the Lutheran Hour Ministries Summitted by Dick Collingwood.

Here is your chance to learn. I would like to mentor someone in the church to learn what I do each month. It is very important that the church has another person who knows how to pay the bills, etc. I really need a volunteer to learn this position. If this sounds like something you would be interested in trying, I would love to train you. Please consider this prayerfully.
