Uniontown, PA DiocesanLentenAppeal The Parish is sincerely grateful to the 271 households who have responded to this year s Diocesan Lenten Appeal. As of June 15 the total of pledges and gifts recorded at the Diocesan Offices is $55,092. Money exceeding our Diocesan Goal ($5,882) will be returned to our Parish. An additional $9118 is needed to reach our parish goal for parking lot repairs. Additional pledges may be placed in the weekly collection at Mass, taken to the Parish Office during the week, or mailed to the Diocesan Offices. WhyDoWeDoThat? CatholicTraditionsExplained QUESTION: June 24 celebrates the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. How was that date chosen? ANSWER: The date for John the Baptist's birth came into existence once the date celebrating Jesus' birth was set around the middle of the 4th century. No one knew exactly when Jesus was born, but the date selected countered the Roman festival to the sun god. After this, a number of other dates could be set using the biblical evidence. When the angel appeared to Mary and she conceived, her cousin, Elizabeth, John the Baptist s mother, was in her sixth month. If Jesus was born on December 25, then he was conceived nine months before, on March 25. If Elizabeth was in her sixth month, then John the Baptist was due three months later on June 25. But why June 24? In John the Evangelist s Gospel, John the Baptist says that Jesus must increase and he, John, must decrease. The other Gospels also have John point to Jesus and not himself as the chosen one of God. In making John's birth a day less than Jesus' full nine months, the Christian community communicated this Gospel reality in its liturgical calendar. Thus the Christian community continued to highlight John's mission and ministry. Maybe we could strive toward that same mission in our own lives. I have been your pastor for five years in sharing with you the joys and sorrows that are part of our journey of the life time. You have welcomed me as your pastor of Saint Mary s Parish family, and I greatly appreciate my stay with you. You have enriched my life by your living faith and example. What power lies in a name? Have you ever met a "David," "Holly," or "Jack" and said to yourself, "They don't look like a David, Holly, or Jack"? Sometimes our name actually adds something to our person. Peculiar people sometimes have peculiar names. Some people of tremendous strength have names that we deem strong as well. Sometimes we give nicknames to people because of some attributes they exhibit. In the Bible, names mean a lot. Saul changes his name to Paul when he converts. Adam means "man," as in the first man. Eve means "to live" or "to breathe." Elizabeth and Zechariah took great care to name their son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not understand why. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah. We have our baptismal names, our surnames, our Confirmation names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Christian. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Christian looks like. Unfortunately, too often those who bear this name don't resemble the characteristics embodied in the name. Simply, a Christian looks like Christ. A Christian acts like Christ. Baptisms are usually scheduled either within or after the 10:00AM Sunday Liturgy. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to call the Pastor at least six months prior but up to one year or more ahead of their anticipated marriage to register the date and schedule an appointment with the Pastor. Sacrament of Holy Orders: Men interested in learning about the vocation to priesthood may contact the Pastor or the Diocesan Office of Clergy Vocations at Anointing of the Sick: This Sacrament is available any time by contacting the Pastor.
