*PRAYER OF THE DAY (The Prayer of the Day begins the transition toward the reading and the interpretation of the Bible, often telegraphing some of the issues and concerns to be raised by the readings.) P: Let us pray. P: Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and C: Amen. forever. FIRST READIING Jeremiah 31: The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. R: The word of the Lord, C: Thanks be to God!

CHORAL ANTHEM (SUNDAY) All Good Gifts
SECOND READING Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. R: The word of the Lord, CHILDREN S SERMON (SUNDAY) *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION C: Thanks be to God!
*GOSPEL READING John 8:31-36 P: The holy gospel according to John, C: Glory to you, O Lord! 31Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. C: Praise to you, O Christ! P: The gospel of the Lord. SERMON *HYMN OF THE DAY: The Church s One Foundation Hymn #654 *APOSTLES CREED (SATURDAY) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again;he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM BY INDIVIUALS Those making affirmation may gather with the minister at the front. P: Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for these people, one with us in the body of Christ, who are making public affirmation of their baptism. P: Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers, whom you have made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. C: Amen. PROFESSION OF FAITH P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. P: Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Confirmands: I renounce them. P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AFFIRMATION P: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Confirmands: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. P: People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? C: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Those making affirmation may kneel. The presiding minister may pray for God s blessing. P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. The blessing may be repeated for each person. The minister may lay both hands on the head of the person and say: Stir up in name the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. C: Amen. OR Father in heaven, for Jesus sake, stir up in name the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm her/his faith, guide her/his life, empower her/him in her/his serving, give her/him patience in suffering, and bring her/him to everlasting life. C: Amen.
P: Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. C: We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WA: Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. WA: Holy God, work in your church across denominational and cultural divisions to form us into a more complete expression of your holy community. Show the world your likeness through us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: By rain, rivers, and oceans, remind us how your word flows through this world, surrounding us with grace. Keep us always in the covenant that is sealed in water and Spirit. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: Free us from the lies we tell ourselves or others in order to justify our words and actions. Lead us to speak honestly and to listen humbly, and reveal your truth among us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: Be a stronghold for people who are in danger this day (especially). In your righteous presence cause the evil that surrounds them to flee, and clothe them with your mercy. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.
WA: Continue making all things new. Seal your covenant with humankind, and write your law on our hearts. Make repentance a regular habit for us so that forgiveness abounds. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: Guide all the saints in proclaiming the good news of salvation in Christ (as you did with Simon and Jude, apostles). Bring your people eternally into Christ s presence on the last day. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen *SHARING OF THE PEACE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OFFERING *OFFERTORY SONG We Are an Offering Hymn #692 We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to you: we are an offering. Lord, use our voices, Lord, use our hands, Lord, use our lives, they are yours: we are an offering. All that we have, all that we are, all that we hope to be, we give to you, we give to you. We lift our voices, we lift our hands, we lift our lives up to you: we are an offering, we are an offering. *OFFERTORY PRAYER WA: Let us pray. God of life, C: you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen.
*THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (We prepare for Christ to enter our very bodies with the words The Lord be with you, just as the angel Gabriel once used these same words to announce Jesus conception in the virgin Mary s womb, e.g. Luke 1:26-28.) *PREFACE
*HOLY, HOLY, HOLY *EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. P: Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. C: Amen.
*LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. 21 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, May God s grace and peace be with you as you gather this Reformation Sunday. Today we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit that invited a group of college professors, led by Dr. Martin Luther, to call the church to account and call us back to the One who is our center, Jesus Christ. The Spirit worked through the Reformers to knock down the walls that church tradition had tried to erect between God and God s people. Led by the Spirit, the Reformers opposed the idea that forgiveness could be bought through the sale of indulgences. They helped people understand that one needn t have an intermediary to take their prayers to God. The Spirit led Dr. Luther to translate the Scriptures into German, the language of the people, so that all could read and hear the Bible in their own language. Most importantly, the Reformers wanted us to understand that our salvation is not something we earn, work toward, or even deserve. Salvation and a life with Jesus Christ is a gift given to us from Jesus. Jesus does this out of his own grace and mercy which he pours out on all. The Reformers wanted us to understand that Christ is with us and this life with Jesus Christ is for us. Jesus is the great and powerful Lord of all, but he also is the Good Shepherd who knows and loves his sheep and is leading us and guiding us through the power of the Holy Spirit all of our life. When we talk about the Reformation we are not just talking about something that happened 501 years ago. Our Lord is at work on us and is with us right now. The Spirit that called the church to Reform is the same Spirit that is at work in us now forming and re-forming us. The good news for us is that God is not finished with us. I believe that if we truly understood how God is continually with us and working on us to shape and reform us our entire lives would be changed. If we understood just how invested God was in our reformation and invested in the hearts and lives of all people, we would no longer find ourselves in opposition to one another. We would, as St. Paul says, out do one other in showing honor. (Romans 12:10) We would find ourselves loving others in spite of our shortcomings through the power of the Holy Spirit working in us and on us. Until the Lord comes again, then, the Reformation will never end. God is changing, molding, and shaping us. God is softening our hearts and opening us to be instruments of God s peace, love and mercy. Jesus Christ is alive and walking with us, calling us to follow him into this world as he is caring for and pouring grace upon grace upon this broken world. The Holy Spirit is pulling, leading, and guiding us to be part of what God is doing loving and caring for this broken and hurting world. May you know God s continual reformation in your life now and always. +Bishop Michael
Acolytes, Ushers, and Altar Helpers Welcome! Each week worship encourages us with the news that we have freely received the best that God has to give. Having freely received the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting, we are then exhorted to give freely in response. Serving as an acolyte, an usher, or as a caretaker of the altar are three of the ways in which we can do so. Should your child wish to serve as an acolyte or resume service as an acolyte, please speak to Joyce Kunkle or Pastor Scott. There will also be a signup sheet available soon. Should you wish to serve as an usher, please speak to Jerry Pozun or Pastor Scott. Should you wish to serve as an altar helper, please speak to Lois Gallus or Pastor Scott. Coffee Hour Fil the Need Annual Clothing Drive The outreach team will be having their annual clothing drive on Saturday, November 3 from If you have any clothes to donate, they can be dropped off in the old lounge. Men's, women's, and children's clothes are all accepted. If you have any questions please contact Mike Kozak at Thank you! Donations of packaged cookies are needed to fill our cupboard. Hot coffee and tea will be provided after worship services during the next several months. If setting the table is not your cup of tea, no problem. You can still help by offering a donation of packaged cookies or by giving a monetary donation. Monetary donations can be given through the church office and cookie donations can be placed on the table in the narthex next to the volunteer sign-up sheet. Coffee hour is a time to spend in fellowship, sharing a few moments of your time with your friends and family of Mt. Calvary. We sincerely hope that this time is meaningful to all of you. In advance, thank you for considering a donation and/or volunteering your time.

What is Craft Club? A new adventure in service. Our first meeting will be Sunday, November 18th at 1:00 PM. The plan is to make various craft projects throughout the next 12 months culminating in a silent auction next year with proceeds to be used for service projects either at Mt. Calvary, donations to World Hunger, and/or other very worthy charities. We will learn to make ornaments at our first meeting. Please RSVP so that enough craft materials are available for everyone (jslayton@atlanticbb.net). How much talent do you need for these ornaments? Not a lot. You need to be able to use a ruler, have some manual dexterity, and follow directions. Most teenagers and adults could complete this project, but is it not suitable for young children. Our next craft meetings may include wreaths and ceramics. Sunday afternoons are not cast in stone. We may meet Wednesday evenings, or change to a day and time that works for as many people as possible. Of course, once you learn a craft, this can be a great at-home hobby for yourself, your family, or additional donations to our charity efforts. If you are interested in leading a craft meeting, please let Jan Layton know. We would love to have several Mt. Calvary members lead a variety of crafts such as woodworking, jewelry making, stained glass, or whatever your talent includes. Hope to see you November 18th! Save the Date Sunday School Christmas Pageant Sunday, December 16th *This year the pageant will take place during the Sunday School hour* Children ages 3-Grade 6 are invited to take part. Practice will be held during the Sunday School hour on December 9th.
