The New Jerusalem January 19 & 20, 2019 MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH
PRELUDE & WELCOME (*) Please stand if able. *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: We gather in the name that is our hope and our future. We gather in the name of our baptism, which means we gather in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Gathered in God s presence, let us confess our sin. P: Mighty and loving God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of Christ. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Amen. P: Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. C: Amen. *GATHERING HYMN Songs of Thankfulness and Praise Hymn #310 *GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. 1
*HYMN OF PRAISE 2
*PRAYER OF THE DAY (The Prayer of the Day begins the transition toward the reading and the interpretation of the Bible, often telegraphing some of the issues and concerns to be raised by the readings.) P: Let us pray. P: Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and salvation to his people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love, that we may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, C: Amen. our Savior and Lord. FIRST READIING Isaiah 62:1-5 1For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. 3You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. C: Thanks be to God! R: The word of the Lord, 3
PSALM (SATURDAY) Psalm 36:5-10 WA: Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, and your faithfulness to the clouds. C: Your righteousness is like the strong mountains, your justice like the great deep; you save humankind and animals, O Lord. WA: How priceless is your love, O God! All people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. C: They feast upon the abundance of your house; you give them drink from the river of your delights. WA: For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light. C: Continue your lovingkindness to those who know you, and your favor to those who are true of heart. CHORAL ANTHEM (SUNDAY) You Satisfy the Hunger Heart Refrain You satisfy the hungry heart with gift of finest wheat. Come give to us, O saving Lord, the bread of life to eat. As when the shepherd calls his sheep, they know and heed his voice; so when you call your fam ly, Lord, we follow and rejoice. Refrain With joyful lips we sing to you our praise and gratitude that you should count us worthy to share this heav nly food. Refrain Is not the cup we bless and share the blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare our oneness in the Lord? Refrain You give yourself to us, O Lord; then selfless let us be, to serve each other in your name in truth and charity. Refrain 4
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. C: Thanks be to God! R: The word of the Lord, 5
CHILDREN S SERMON (SUNDAY) *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION *GOSPEL READING John 2:1-11 C: Glory to you, O Lord! P: The holy gospel according to John, 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 4And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. 5His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. C: Praise to you, O Christ! P: The gospel of the Lord, SERMON *HYMN OF THE DAY: We Are Called 6 Hymn #720
*APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WA: United as one body in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. WA: We pray for the church. Strengthen bishops, pastors, deacons, and all who lead your people in ministry. Pour out your Spirit and make us bold to proclaim your reign of mercy and justice. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: For the earth. For vineyards and orchards, fields and gardens, urban parks and wilderness areas. Fill the earth with your abundance and provide for the needs of all living things. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: For the nations. Guide leaders and decision makers toward the well-being of all in their care. Strengthen those who work to uphold human rights for the sake of the dignity of all people. Shelter communities threatened by violence and show us the way of peace. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 7
WA: For those in need. For those who face a scarcity of resources and those who struggle with debt. For all who suffer with chronic pain, all who grieve, and all who are ill (especially). Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: For this assembly. Transform us and fill us with your life, so that we pour out your love in service to the world. Bless all who work to provide food for others. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died in faith (especially). Inspire us by their witness and unite us in the eternal light of your presence. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. WA: Receive our prayers and fill us with the radiance of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. *SHARING OF THE PEACE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OFFERING *OFFERTORY SONG Break Now the Bread of Life Hymn #515 Break now the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, as once you broke the loaves beside the sea. Beyond the sacred page I seek you, Lord; my spirit waits for you, O living Word. Bless your own word of truth, dear Lord, to me, as when you blessed the bread by Galilee. Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall; and I shall find my peace, my All-in-All! You are the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, your holy word the truth that rescues me. Give me to eat and live with you above; teach me to love your truth, for you are love. 8
*OFFERTORY PRAYER WA: Let us pray. God of all creation, C: all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (We prepare for Christ to enter our very bodies with the words The Lord be with you, just as the angel Gabriel once used these same words to announce Jesus conception in the virgin Mary s womb, e.g. Luke 1:26-28.) 9
*PREFACE 10
*HOLY, HOLY, HOLY *EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. P: Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. C: Amen. 11
*LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you. COMMUNION SONG Lamb of God 12
COMMUNION HYMNS: Jerusalem, My Happy Home Jesus, Come! For We Invite You In the Singing Hymn #628 Hymn #312 Hymn #466 *PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION WA: Let us pray. Send your Spirit with us now, that we may set the captive free, use your gifts to build one another up, and in everything reflect your glory revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *BLESSING P: The God of glory dwell in you richly, name you beloved, and shine brightly on your path; and the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. 20 Pictorial Directory In celebration of Mount Calvary s 75th Anniversary, we will once again be creating a pictorial directory. This will be an opportunity for members to receive their portrait and a directory as well as the option to purchase additional prints. Lifetouch will be at the church for two sessions: March 26th through 28th and April 23rd through 25th from 2-9 PM. We will also be seeking pictures from shut-ins or those who are unable to attend any of the sessions. There will be another option for people who cannot make the sessions; they can go to any church in the nation that is doing a directory and have their portrait done which will be then sent for our photographer. All photos will be placed in the directory alphabetically. Sign up sheets and additional information will be forthcoming at a later date. In the meantime, we will also be gathering photos and information from the church groups, activities, and committees for use in the directory. We would like to have this in digital form so that we can create a archive of photos and documents for future use. If you would like photos of your group but are unable to submit a photo, please contact Noelle Berkey at or Sue Osborne ar and we will be happy to take some photos for you Envelopes can be picked up in the narthex Every year the offering envelopes are renumbered so they are in alphabetical order. Your number may have changed from last year. So, beginning Jan. 1, throw away your 2018 offering envelopes and start using your 2019 offering envelopes. If you have received envelopes and choose not to have them, OR if you did not receive envelopes and would like to have offering envelopes, please call the church office. Also, help deliver envelopes to your friends and neighbors. You will find a magnet with a reminder of our 75 Anniversary dinner on it. Thank you! 19
