Inviting Every Generation MOUNT CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH December 22 & 23, 2018

PRELUDE: Trombone O Come, O Come, Emmanuel WELCOME (*) Please stand if able. *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: We gather in the name that is our hope and our future. We gather in the name of our baptism, which means we gather in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Let us come before God in confession. P: To you, O God, C: we lift up our souls. You know us through and through; we confess our sins to you. Remember not our sins; remember us with your steadfast love. Show us your ways; teach us your paths; and lead us in justice and truth, for the sake of your goodness in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. P: Children of God, come with joy and draw water from the well of salvation. Remember the gift of baptism: your sin is washed away in the name of Jesus; you belong to Christ; you are anointed to serve. Stand up and raise your heads! The reign of God is near. C: Amen. *GATHERING HYMN Each Winter as the Year Grows Older Hymn #252 *GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

*KYRIE

*PRAYER OF THE DAY AND LIGHTING OF ADVENT WREATH (The Prayer of the Day begins the transition toward the reading and the interpretation of the Bible, often telegraphing some of the issues and concerns to be raised by the readings.) P: Let us pray. P: Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. With your abundant grace and might, free us from the sin that binds us, that we may receive you in joy and serve you always, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. FIRST READIING Micah 5:2-5a 2But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. 3Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. 4And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; 5aand he shall be the one of peace. R: The word of the Lord, C: Thanks be to God!

PSALM Luke 1:46b-55 WA: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, C: for you, Lord, have looked with favor on your lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: WA: you, the Almighty, have done great things for me and holy is your name. C: You have mercy on those who fear you, from generation to generation. WA: You have shown strength with your arm and scattered the proud in their conceit, C: casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. WA: You have filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. C: You have come to the aid of your servant Israel, to remember the promise of mercy, WA: the promise made to our forbears, to Abraham and his children forever.

SECOND READING Hebrews 10:5-10 5Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; 6in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7Then I said, See, God, I have come to do your will, O God (in the scroll of the book it is written of me). 8When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings (these are offered according to the law), 9then he added, See, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. 10And it is by God s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. R: The word of the Lord, CHILDREN S SERMON (SUNDAY) *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION C: Thanks be to God!

*GOSPEL READING Luke 1:39-45 P: The holy gospel according to Luke, C: Glory to you, O Lord! 39In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ! P: The gospel of the Lord, SERMON *HYMN OF THE DAY: O Little Town of Bethlehem Hymn #279

*APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WA: As we await the coming of Christ, we pray in hope for the church, the world, and all of creation. WA: Faithful Lord, you keep your promises. Move your church to sing like Mary and rejoice like Elizabeth. Teach us to sing of your faithfulness all our days. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Ancient of Days, with joy you danced over the waters and birthed creation. Give us joy in caring for the soil beneath us, the water around us, and the sky above us. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Prince of peace, your sacrifice gives abundant life to all. Raise up leaders in every nation whose goals are health and well-being for all people and creation. Grant them wisdom and compassion to serve as you would have them serve. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great.

WA: Good Shepherd, you feed your flock. Fill the hungry with good things. Lift up the lowly. Accompany the refugee. Comfort the lonely. Heal the sick (especially). Send us in haste to surround them with your love. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Love Incarnate, you are with us at the manger, on the cross, and on the resurrection road. Walk with all who live with depression, grief, or heartache in this season. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Ever-living God, you are Alpha and Omega. We thank you for all who sing now in the heavenly choir, especially those dear to us. Join our voices with theirs in praise of the Christ child. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. WA: Confident that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, we bring to you these prayers and those unspoken, in the name of Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. *SHARING OF THE PEACE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OFFERING *OFFERTORY SONG Bind Us Together Hymn #748 (WOV) Bind us together, Lord, bind us together with cords that cannot be broken. Bind us together, Lord, bind us together, Lord: bind us together with love. There is only one God. There is only one King. There is only one Body; that is why we sing: You are the family of God. You are the promise divine. You are God's chosen desire; you are the glorious new wine.

*OFFERTORY PRAYER WA: Let us pray. God of abundance, C: we bring before you the precious fruits of your creation, and with them our very lives. Teach us patience and hope as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen. *THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (We prepare for Christ to enter our very bodies with the words The Lord be with you, just as the angel Gabriel once used these same words to announce Jesus conception in the virgin Mary s womb, e.g. Luke 1:26-28.)

*PREFACE

*HOLY, HOLY, HOLY *EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming.

C: Come, Lord Jesus. P: Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. C: Come, Holy Spirit. P: All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. *LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: God fills the hungry with good things. Taste and see that the Lord is good. COMMUNION SONG: Lamb of God

Amen. *BLESSING P: May God direct your ways in peace, make you abound in love for one another and for all, and strengthen your hearts until the coming of our Lord Jesus.
