2 Garage Sale Jamie Gill Our outstanding youth group had a yard sale Saturday June 4. It was a huge success. Watkins Hall was filled to the brim with tables of treasures, most of which came from our loving congregation. Perhaps one of the most noticeable donations, was the stacks and stacks of books, some even donated from our very own church library. Our youth worked hard selling items, greeting costumers, helping count money and taking purchases out to patron s vehicles. Thank you to everyone who donated and those that came to work alongside these outstanding kids. Special thanks to Pastor Norm, Kathy Story, Nancy Tasker-Johnson and some of our youth parents, who stayed on board during the morning to help out. Our grand total was in the range of $700, which will go to benefit our mission trip to South Dakota next month. As always, we thank you, our church congregation, for your constant support of our youth group here at First Presbyterian. Thank you for being a wonderful example of the hands and feet of Christ to us, as we go to be His hands and feet to Sioux Nation in South Dakota! 2

4 Socks and Undies Pat Felhauer Beginning July 3rd through July 31st, the Deacons will have boxes at each entrance to collect socks and undies. There will also be a collection box in the church office. Times have changed a "little" since some of us were in school. The girls prefer colorful and "low" socks and hip hugger or bikini style underwear. The boys prefer the knit boxer briefs. Girls sock size should match with shoe size 10-4, and boys shoe size 9-3. Some women's socks and a few men's socks would also be appreciated. All these items will be given to the Gospel Rescue Mission Clothing Store. That store assists students each year with socks and undies. The store is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday where parents can choose 4-5 outfits and 3 pairs of new socks and underwear. This program was started in our church by the Deacons in The original theme was "because every child matters. Then blue containers were placed in the church with deacons handing out flyers. The project at First Presbyterian Church has grown over the past few years, At one point several years ago we were able to donate more than 1,000 pairs of socks and underwear. Along with the socks and undies boxes, the Deacons will also have boxes for school supplies. Backpack Sunday is August 14th. Thank you for helping the Deacons with these two outreach programs. 4

5 Notes and Announcements In April an article summarizing the minutes of various church organizations, including the session was published. That article asked that people interested in this type of article express their interest. Nobody did, so this type of article will not be continued. However the session minutes and all the committee reports are posted in Jones Hall by the office, so this information is easily available. July 9 to 15 Youth Mission trip to South Dakota July 25 to 29 Vacation Bible School The Cover The cover is part of a descanso located between the traffic lanes on I-25 north of Las Cruces. A descanso is a cross placed at the site of a violent, unexpected death, in memoriam. There are a number on the highways in New Mexico and in other states in the southwest. The highway department tried to outlaw their placement by the roads because they interfered with the upkeep on the medians and side areas. However public pressure caused that decision to be reversed and efforts are made to preserve them. This particular one is more elaborate than usual and can be seen north of Las Cruces.
