Who is a saint? Someone with a halo? Someone with hands always folded? Someone who looks good as a statue or on a holy card? Father John Hardon shares the following definition of a saint: Saints: A name given in the New Testament to Christians generally (Colossians 1:2) but early restricted to persons who were eminent for holiness. In the strict sense saints are those who distinguish themselves by heroic virtue during life and whom the Church honors as saints either by her ordinary universal teaching authority or by a solemn definition called canonization. The Church's official recognition of sanctity implies that the persons are now in heavenly glory, that they may be publicly invoked everywhere, and that their virtues during life or martyr's death are a witness and example to the Christian faithful. (Etym. Latin sanctus, holy, sacred.) (Hardon, 1999). There are saints all around us. They come in all ages, genders, and occupations. Saints are those who make good happen in our world. What s the difference between a good person and a saint? Saints are good people seen from the perspective of faith. Through the eyes of faith, we see in others goodness something that points to God. Paul Tillich, the Protestant theologian says, Saints are not so much saints because of their goodness, but because of their transparency. They point to something beyond themselves. St. Matthew shares something very similar: You are the light of the world. People will see your good actions and give praise to your heavenly father. The Beatitudes tells us that faithful individuals are called to live out actions of gentleness, thirst for justice, peacemaking, and mercy, qualities which point to God. In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized on August 27, 2017: Anderson Edward Gonet son of David & Juliet; Eva Marie Gonet daughter of David & Juliet; Rebecca Lynn Woodworth daughter of Justin & Elise; Olivia Rose Smedberg daughter of David & Catherine As we reflect upon the meaning and role of the saints in our lives, we are reminded of our promise that through our baptism we already share in the glory of the saints whom we honor. Looking for a faith-filled activity for your preschooler? Little Messengers is a Catholic Preschool Co-Op for children ages 2 1/2-5 years old that meets in the St. Joseph Catholic Church meeting rooms on Tuesday mornings during the school year. Parents or caregivers participate fully in leading various activities for the children, including a nursery for younger siblings. (This is not a drop-off!) Diocesan Child Protection Certification is required for participating adults. There is a nominal supply fee. As the youth of the parish return to school, we would like to share our plans for the parish Youth Ministry program for As we begin the school year, we extend our best wishes and prayers to David Bristow as he begins a new ministry this year after ministering as our Director of Youth Ministry (DYM) for 15 years. We welcome Father James Puglis, TOR as our new DYM. Father James will work with a team of Youth Ministers: Jenn Chmiel, Brother Vince Yeager, TOR and Brother Joseph Marie Krilich, TOR. Father James looks forward to ministering with the parents and youth. Father James and the Youth Ministry Team look forward to welcoming the youth of the parish at the opening meeting: Sunday, September 10, 2017, 6:00 pm 8:00 pm in Parish Hall C We invite you to join us for our first meeting as we introduce the theme, share prayer, fellowship, and food. This year our focus will be Walking Humbly with God, a reference to Micah 6:8. Humility is something puzzling and ironic. It is a virtue which must remain unseen and as soon as one claims it outright disappears immediately. This year we will do our best to become the most humble members of our parish (ironically) through weekly Sunday and Wednesday night events as well as retreats, service projects, Work Camp, and daily living. We are excited for this next year and can t wait to see how the Lord will be working in our lives.
