Select passages from the Acts of the Apostles and the Letter of James will allow us to trace the leadership of James among Jewish believers in Jerusalem and his role in the expansion of the Jesus movement to non-jews. We hope you ll plan to join us for this adult education opportunity Sunday mornings at 9:40. 3 2015 Platte County Back to School Fair P A G E 3 The annual Platte County Back to School Fair will be held on Thursday, July 30, at the Rock of Kansas City Church, N. Winan, KCMO children from Platte County families with limited resources are expected to participate in the Back to School Fair, which is sponsored by United Services Community Action Agency, Platte County Health Department, and Platte County Community Centers YMCA, serving all Platte County Schools. On behalf of the congregation of Parkville Presbyterian Church, the Mission Team through general budget funding is providing approximately 50 scientific calculators (TI 30X-A) to older students for math and science classes. This year the Back to School Fair organizers have also requested our help in providing items for hygiene packets for students to be distributed at the fair. The PPC Mission Team has committed to 700 canisters of deodorant. Volunteers are also needed to pack hygiene items in individuals sacks the day before the event and to distribute the hygiene packets the day of the fair. If you are interested in providing canisters of deodorant, a marked collection container will be placed in the narthex after Easter Sunday. If you are interested in helping pack the hygiene sacks on the set-up day, Wednesday, July 29, or in distributing calculators and hygiene packets at the fair, Thursday, July 30, please contact Linda Tillinghast at or at htillin_6111@juno.com. The Mission Team is very pleased to receive Back to School Fair assistance from the PPC Faith and Family group. Thank you all for your continuing support of PC Missions. Linda Tillinghast
4 Pastoral Visit R ECENTLY, I TRIED TO EXPLAIN the concept of a resurrection to our 3rd to 6th grade youth group. Some of them were able to accept it with a generosity of faith, while others had trouble, and I can appreciate both responses. As Christians, we believe strange things, and sometimes, it s only the gift of faith a willingness to believe without clear access to fully convincing evidence that allows us to trust in God and live out our beliefs. This week, we are celebrating Christ s Resurrection, the belief that on the very first Easter morning, Jesus tomb was empty not because his body had been stolen by grave robbers, and not because he had risen up like a zombie, and not even because he had been revived like his friend Lazarus in John 11 but because he had been resurrected. Because he died, conquered the power of death, and then received new life in a new kind of body. In 1 Corinthians 15, the apostle Paul says that this new body relates to our current bodies the way a tree relates to a seed. The seed contains everything within it necessary to make the tree, but it must first die as a seed before it becomes something new. Physically, the two may look quite different from one another, but they are actually one continuous thing: one body, one spirit, risen to a glorious new life. When the women came upon his empty tomb on that first Easter morning, they were T H E S A L T S H A K E R shocked as shocked as you might be if you came to the grave of a loved one and found a hole and an empty casket. The Scriptures they knew, which we have come to call the Old Testament, talked about the possibility of resurrection, but it was always a communal resurrection, a whole group of bodies rising, as in Ezekiel chapter 37. This, what happened to Jesus, was unexpected completely out of the blue for them. But he had indeed been resurrected. He became what Paul referred to as the first fruits of those who have died (1 Cor. 15:20). And the Christian tradition that we hold and live into teaches that, because we have been joined with Christ in baptism and united with him at the communion table, then we join him in his death and in his rising. We, too, are promised a resurrection, just like his (Romans 6:3-5). That shouldn t be too hard for third to sixth graders to understand, right? But of course it is. And it s hard for adults, too. Resurrection is a strange and mystical and wonderful thing, and what, in the end, does it mean? We ll be exploring that question in this week s Holy Week services. We will join Jesus and his disciples during the last week of his life, as they grapple with the danger of being in Jerusalem, experience the horror of Jesus arrest and trial and crucifixion, and then struggle even with the glory of his rise to new life. This week, let us wrestle with these things alongside them, and try to find the spirit and power of resurrection for us. Amen.
5 P A G E 5 Vacation Bible School We know it sometimes seems like summer is a long time away, but it will be here before you know it. Vacation Bible School is one of the most significant events for the church during the summer. We have the opportunity to introduce the children of our church and the children of our community to biblical stories and Christian service. Everyone is needed to help with VBS - even you. Pray about how your gifts and talents can fit into the week. Mon - Fri July :00-11:30 Sun, August 2 11:00 Watch a promo video: Parkville Symphonic Band 20th Anniversary Concert The Parkville Symphonic Band Spring Concert will feature the premier performance of Stephanie Berg s Summoning Fire, a new piece composed by Ms. Berg especially for the Parkville Symphonic Band s 20 th season. The concert will be presented Sunday, April 12, at 7:00 p.m., at the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the Park University Campus in Parkville, Missouri. Ms. Berg s fast-paced use of driving and constantly changing rhythms and hypnotic melodies creates an exciting and high-energy piece that easily conjures imagery of dancing flames and fire dancers! In addition to pieces for symphonic band, compositions by Ms. Berg have been performed by various chamber ensembles and the St. Louis and Arkansas Symphony Orchestras. Also featured will be the John Williams humorous and delightful March from the movie 1941, and music from the Broadway show, My Fair Lady. Gioachino Rossini s La Gazza Ladra overture will also be performed, the prelude to an opera in which the last-minute discovery of a magpie s antics saves the lives of those wrongfully accused of theft! We invite you to join with the band in celebrating our 20 th season with performances of these and other fine pieces of music. Afterwards, we hope you will join with the band members for a reception. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public. The Parkville Symphonic Band, directed by Steve Berg, is made up of professional and amateur area musicians, with membership open to anyone who plays a band instrument. For more information, visit ParkvilleSymphonicBand.org, or call (816)
