3 September 16, 2018 St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish Page 3 A Message from Father Brian ~ As I sit at my computer to compose this column, Hurricane Florence is moving in a direct line toward the Carolinas, and the news is full of plans for evacuation, emergency preparedness, pre-storm damage assessments, and all manner of related stories. I have no way of knowing what kind of destruction may have been visited on thousands of people, homes, and businesses by the time you read this, but we pray for all those who may well have been affected in the most heartbreaking of ways by this monster storm. Let s keep our voices raised, and our hearts and hands open to lending whatever support we can. This weekend our diocese is once again celebrating Catechetical Sunday. A catechist (from the Greek for orally instruct ) is someone charged with handing on the faith they themselves cherish, teaching not only what we believe as Catholics, but demonstrating how that belief can transform the way we live. With our first graders registering over ice cream last Sunday, and Faith Formation classes just around the corner, we ask that God pour out his blessing on each and every person involved in one of the catechetical ministries at St. Lawrence. We naturally think of the parishioner standing in the midst of a class of second, or fifth, or eighth graders, with the hope of instilling a deeper knowledge of who Jesus is and how the children can come to know him, heart to heart. I d have to double-check with Maria Davidson, our Director of Faith Formation, but I believe our parish has one of the largest numbers of catechists of any parish in the Diocese! We have ample reason to be proud of them, and of the extraordinary gift they give to our children each time they begin a lesson. But catechesis isn t only taking place in the more formal setting of a classroom. It s also happening when a member of our baptismal preparation team visits the home of new parents to help them prepare for an upcoming christening, and to reassure them that they are most welcome as members of the St. Lawrence community. It happens when married couples invite engaged couples into their own homes, as part of our In-Home Pre-Cana Program, to help those who have yet to exchange their vows understand more deeply the joys and the challenges of the sacred covenant they re preparing to enter. Catechesis is happening when non-catholic adults approach our parish asking to be initiated, and enter into the RCIA process with generous and faith-filled parishioners who are eager to walk that journey with them. Catechesis is happening when a study or prayer group meets in the Bethany Center to delve more deeply into some aspect of our faith; when a priest or deacon preaches a homily; when our teens gather on a Sunday night for Youth Group; and when a parade of our youngest parishioners marches out of church to listen to the Gospel during the Children s Liturgy of the Word. This weekend, let s applaud and pray for all our dedicated catechists, grateful for the tremendously important role they play in instilling the faith in our children and young people, but conscious too that we are ALL called to teach by word and example what it means to hold Jesus at the center of our lives. May our patron and brother, St. Lawrence, pray for us! God love you. For several weekends now, the bulletin has been inviting boys and girls in the fourth grade and older to think about becoming altar servers. In celebration of Francis feast, we will have a Blessing of Animals on Saturday, October 6th at 12:00 Noon on the lawn behind the rectory and Outreach Center. All creatures, great and small are welcome, with their human friends. If you do intend to bring your pet(s), please be sure they will not be able to get away from you during the brief service! This event is weather permitting. SUFFOLK COUNTY MARATHON On Sunday, October 28th, Catholic Health Services will once again be sponsoring the 3rd Annual Suffolk County Marathon in support of our veterans. Montauk Highway will be closed from Patchogue to Heckscher State Park from the hours of 8:00AM until 2:00PM. As you can imagine, this creates a real challenge for our parishioners trying to get to Mass. We have been in contact with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone s office, and the Suffolk County Police Department to determine the best possible solution for our Mass schedule. So that we may accommodate parishioners as best we can, please note the following revised Mass schedule for Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th. These changes are for the weekend of the marathon ONLY. The Mass schedule will be as follows: Saturday, October 27th: 3:30P.M. and 5:00P.M. Sunday, October 28th: 7:00A.M. and 5:00P.M. On Saturday, October 27th confessions will remain at the same time (3:45-4:45) but will take place in the Bethany Center. Gifts of Love The Sanctuary Lamp will burn alongside the tabernacle during the week of September 16th in memory of Anna Flynn Fitzgerald from Mimi. The Altar Rose, which stands to the left of the tabernacle as a reminder of our prayers for the unborn, is donated in memory of Anna Flynn Fitzgerald Frank Napoli Bill Zoller

Well, for our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility in Amityville, life is good and sometimes very busy. Since I arrived at St. Pius X, I have found living here like being at home. I have found much happiness with my fellow priests and in the entire community, and I especially appreciate the support I receive. Thank you for helping to make this home possible. Rev. Msgr. For more info call: Learning from Saint Teresa of Calcutta On the 5 th of this month, the Church celebrated the feast day of Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Mother Teresa was such an extraordinary woman, and she continues to inspire the lives of countless people to reach out lovingly to those who are most in need. But we need not join the Missionaries of Charity, or literally work in the streets of Calcutta to do very meaningful good for our brothers and sisters. One avenue we can take is participation in the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Over 300 St. Lawrence households have already made a pledge to the 2018 Appeal, and to them we are deeply grateful. But we hope far more will choose to participate before year s end. Your gift to the Appeal will help sustain the diocesan programs that lift up more than 600,000 men, women, and children right here on Long Island. The CMA challenges us to look beyond our individual needs, and to remember our responsibility as disciples to feed the hungry, clothe the naked.
