3 February 18, 2018 St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish Page 3 A Message from Father Brian ~ I can t honestly say I remember the last time Ash Wednesday fell on the same day as Valentine s Day, but I have to admit I found the experience a little strange... sending last-minute Valentine s greetings with an unsightly black splotch on my forehead; trying to stay strong and resist that heart-shaped donut on a day of fast and abstinence; seeing the shops in town decked out in red and pink while our church is draped in penitential purple. However you navigated this rather unusual February 14 th, I hope it reminded you of how deeply you are lovedby others in your life, certainly, but first and foremost by the God who calls us to a deeper intimacy with his heart this Lenten season. Back in the fall, we spent a few weekends making a concerted effort to re-adopt Stewardship as a guiding principle for the way we approach our participation in the life of the Church. It may not have seemed the most appealing place to begin, but we started by focusing on our responsibility to support St. Lawrence financially. Stewardship always begins with the clear-eyed recognition that we have been singularly blessed that all we have ultimately comes from God. We are not the masters, but the stewards, the caretakers of what God has entrusted to us. Our financial resources are certainly part of what God has given, and our challenge is to share some portionhopefully the first part, and not just the crumbs with the Lord and his Church. But please don t make the mistake of thinking that stewardship is only about the collection basket! Just as fundamental is the use to which we put our talentsour intelligence, energy, creativity, and unique aptitudes. Am I sharing some choice part of my own talents with the larger community? Last weekend we celebrated the hundreds of parishioners who have said yes to that needour ministers and volunteers. As we enter Lent together, we d like to shift the focus yet again toward our stewardship of time. Few things are as precious as our time, and the gritty black ashes we wore on Wednesday were meant to be a sharp reminder that life is fleeting; every moment is precious. How do I apportion my time, particularly when it comes to my relationship with the Lord? Am I satisfied with making it to Mass most weekends, whispering a quick prayer before bed, and leaving it at that? Jesus thirsts for our time, and this Lent, we have an opportunity to remodel our lives so that the first and best part of our day is his. That might mean setting aside some of our usual to-do s in order to spend quiet in prayer; even 10 minutes in communion with the Lord can be a marvelous gift! Perhaps you feel called to get better acquainted with the Bible, or other spiritual reading; to pray the Rosary, attend the Stations of the Cross, turn into the church parking lot on a non-sunday and spend a few minutes in silence before the tabernacle. The possibilities of giving the gift of our time a bit more lavishly to the One from whom it all comes are endless, but just making a start is a beautiful thing. Be sure to take one of the purple cards you ll find in church this weekend, and prayerfully consider how you might present your Master with a more generous share of your time... good and faithful steward. May our brother and patron, St. Lawrence, pray for us! God bless you. Remembering Our Departed Loved Ones We lift up our hearts in prayer for our brothers and sisters who have died, in the sure hope that they will see the Lord face to face: Margaret Sweizer Sibyl O Reilly Mizzi Jack M. decicco Please Pray for the Sick Michael Schindlar; Steven Michael Keenan; Peter Hlywa; Gina Blenk; Jim & Lorraine Mattimore; Andrew Wittman Jr.; Everett Maxwell; Bruce Weiler; Eileen Devlin; Kathleen Yaccarino; Gloria Portman; Suzanne McCarthy; Sr. Barbara Gerardi; Donald Lang; Bill Beaudry; Jane Vlokhos; Jennifer Wittman-Cahill; Josephine Lowth, Michael Gallagher; Allison Ruddick; Jack Lewis; Barry Fitzpatrick; Joe O Hara; Richard LaFrance Jr.; Vito Guzzo; Mary Elizabeth Bachmann; Paul Vogt; Bonnie Lem; Ellen DiAntonio; and Claire Gallo [Please call the Parish Office if you wish to place someone on our Sick List. 4 February 18, 2018 St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish Page 4 As a parish community we re privileged and very excited to announce that this year we have not one, but six people (1 adult and 5 teens) preparing to enter fully into the life of the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Christian initiation. This will take place on Saturday, March 31 st, at the solemn Easter Vigil. Four of the five young people Phoenix and Jag Reivers, and Penelope and Christopher Zambrano, will be fully initiated: that is, they will be baptized, confirmed, and receive the Eucharist as part of the rites taking place on that most holy night. Kimberly Zambrano has already been baptized in the Catholic Church, but will be completing her initiation by receiving Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist with the other four young people. Mr. George Stack was baptized in the Episcopal Church and is eager to formally join the Roman Catholic community. He has been meeting regularly with our RCIA team in preparation for professing the Catholic faith and receiving the sacraments. In the weeks ahead (depending on the Mass you attend), you may see our candidates for the Easter sacraments being dismissed at the mid-point of the liturgy... sent forth to reflect more deeply on the Word of God we have just heard. During Lent, they will also be participating in a handful of special rituals called Scrutinies ritual stepping stones toward baptism, and their full membership in the Church. Let s be sure to keep Phoenix, Jag, Penelope, Christopher, Kimberly and George in our prayers as we make our way toward Easter, happy that they will soon enjoy the same intimacy with the risen Christ that we so often take for granted. THE QUESTION BOX Just for funand some ongoing educationhere s a question on our Catholic spirituality and tradition. Enjoy! Q: How many of the Gospels record Jesus' experience of temptation in the desert? (a) all of them (b) only St. Luke (c) all but St. John (d) being the Son of God, Jesus could not have been truly tempted to sin A: The Gospel story for the First Sunday of Lent is always an account of Jesus temptation in the wilderness. It is a crucial experience at the beginning of the Lord's public life, and a deeply symbolic episode. This year we listen to St. Mark's version of the story; it is probably not as familiar as what we find in St. Matthew and St. Luke. Both Matthew and Luke describe a spiritual contest between Jesus and Satan, with Jesus facing three distinct temptations. St. Mark is typically a more brief account; his reference to Jesus' desert experience is only two verses long, and does not elaborate on what the devil's temptations were. St. John is the only evangelist who does not include the episode at all. The correct answer is (c). FORMED for Lent! And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry (Matthew 4:2). The devil perceived Jesus hunger as weakness and tried to tempt him in the desert; however, Jesus fasting armed him with a clarity of mind that strengthened his refusal of worldly things. This month, we have the opportunity to make ourselves hungry, to remove certain distractions and pleasures, so that we may clearly understand that only God can truly fulfill.
