3 March 10, 2019 St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish Page 3 A Message from Father Brian ~ Pumpkins in March Some of you, dear readers, may remember me sharing this same photo of a fabulous mural I spotted while traveling west from the ferry terminal at Orient Point back in the fall. I haven t been out on the North Fork since then, so I m hoping it s still there painted on the side of a small shed next to the Community Christian Fellowship in Mattituck. I passed it by at first, but was so determined to have a closer look that I turned the car around and parked in the church lot. Other cars were slowing down and stopping on the side of the road too. The picture I took didn t do the mural justice the pumpkin looked almost three-dimensional, and the white lettering just popped right off the surface. I loved it! It occurs to me that as we begin our annual Lenten pilgrimage once again, that phrase could make for an outstanding guiding principle. This sacred time is all about picking Jesus... recognizing that he, and he alone, deserves to occupy the innermost center of our lives. If we re scrupulously honest, we know that all too often we pick very different people, things, and preoccupations to hold that center-place. To what, or to whom, does my heart really belong? To what, or to whom, do I give the lion s share of my time, my focus, my energy, my resources, my love? Is it the One who stepped headlong into our sin-spattered world some two thousand years ago, to undo our enslavement to sin and death? Or have I chosen someone else... something else... to sit on the throne of my heart? In this weekend s magnificent Gospel, Jesus himself is tempted to look away from the path his Father has pointed out for him, and to choose other options instead. But no matter what the devil offers, Jesus will not pick anything but fidelity to his Father. Our challenge is much the same. As we walk together through these austere but potentially transformative weeks of Lent, may the Spirit of God help us to inspect the inner landscape of our lives, to jettison whatever doesn t belong there, and to beg that in his mercy, God will make us new people. The parish will offer an array of tools to assist us as we engage in this interior work, from specially tailored liturgies and opportunities for prayer, to materials for daily reading and reflection, to a parish-wide study of the sacrament of Reconciliation. But ultimately, it s up to each of us to choose rightly. If we would be Christians in more than just name, then day by day, moment by moment, we must pick Jesus. He is the answer to every question, and to every longing of the human heart. This Lent, and always, choose him. May our brother and patron, St. Lawrence, pray for us. God love you! Remembering Our Departed Loved Ones We lift up our hearts in prayer for our brothers and sisters who have died, in the sure hope that they will one day see the Lord face to face: Maureen Smith Judith Maurer Gerard Campbell Gifts of Love The Altar Rose, which stands to the left of the tabernacle as a reminder of our prayers for the unborn, is donated in memory of: Frank Napoli and the Souls in Purgatory Please Pray for the Sick Madeline Downes; Andy Magyar; Grace McDonough; Eileen Devlin; Christian Preuss; Elizabeth Benson; Katherine Benson; Robert A. Create a password and you re all set! GUIDELINES FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE For centuries, and following the teaching of Jesus, the Church has called her children to engage in bodily penance during Lent. This consists primarily in the practices of fasting and abstinence. The current Church guidelines are as follows: All Catholics, 14 years of age and older, are obliged to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59, inclusive, are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal, and avoiding any food between meals. Two other light meals, which together would not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. Those whose work or health would be in any way impaired by fasting and abstinence are excused from the practice. One s individual conscience should decide when there is a significant reason to excuse one-self. A more serious reason is required to excuse oneself from fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday.
6 March 10, 2019 St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish Page 6 THE QUESTION BOX Just for fun and some ongoing education we offer a question on our Catholic spirituality and tradition. Enjoy! Q: We always talk about Lent being forty days, but it adds up to more than forty if you take a look at a calendar. Do Sundays count? When does the season actually begin and end? (a) Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday (b) the First Sunday of Lent, to the early evening of Holy Thursday (c) Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, but minus the Sundays in between (d) the First Sunday of Lent to Palm Sunday A: The answer to this question really has two parts: Lent does indeed begin on Ash Wednesday. And the Sundays of the season certainly do count in fact, one could argue that the Sundays of Lent are the pillars on which the season rests. But Ash Wednesday and the three days that follow it are a kind of orientation to the season, a preamble so to speak. The forty-day period we refer to so often, begins on the First Sunday of Lent, and extends to the evening of Holy Thursday, ending just as we begin the Mass of the Lord s Supper and the Sacred Triduum. Take out your calendar and do some counting for yourself! The correct answer is (b). Please join us as we welcome the newly baptized to our Christian community: Olivia Grace Doelger NEVER BEEN CONFIRMED? Quite a few Catholics have not had the opportunity to receive this beautiful sacrament, and for any number of reasons. We would like to make it possible for any adults or young adults to be confirmed on Pentecost Sunday, June 9th. Sophia Grace Furino Annabella Lily Gatz Delaney Elizabeth Stevens In preparation, the staff here at St. Lawrence will be offering a series of 6 or 7 meetings, beginning in April (day and time TBA). Participants would need to be baptized Catholics, who have already received Holy Communion. For now, we d like to know who is interested. Please contact the rectory, and leave a message for Fr. Tom ( x 117). Important Message Regarding Completing Monthly VIRTUS Online Bulletin All persons who have attended a VIRTUS Protecting God s Children Training session must keep up with the continuing education component by reading all monthly VIRTUS Training Bulletins.
