1 Seminary United Methodist Church 285 N Seminary Street Roanoke, Indiana To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world November 2017 Volume 14 - Issue 10 Adult Sunday School 9:15am seminaryumc46783@gmail.com From the Pastor s Pen The wonderful season of Thanksgiving is upon us! More than a feast, football and shopping. Thanksgiving is meant to be a holy day of gratitude for all God s goodness and blessing to us and our nation. Remember with me the story of the Pilgrim who came aboard the Mayflower so long ago. In the Year of Our Lord 1620, one hundred-two brave Pilgrim souls sailed from England seeking freedom of worship according to Scripture and conscience rather than the king s edicts. The popular picture of Thanksgiving is the Pilgrims giving thanks to God and feasting with Native Americans in the fall of the journey across the Atlantic was perilous and filled with danger and illness...the Mayflower landed in the wrong place, Massachusetts not Virginia where there were already settlements so they were lost and alone Worship Service Sunday Announcements 10:10am Service 10:15am Kid s Club and Youth Group Wednesday at 3:45pm Church Office Hours Monday and Thursday 9:00am to 2:00pm and By Appointment Pastor Joshua Johnson Cell joshua.johnson@inumc.org..the winter hit hard and strong and bitterly cold early with only a log building for shelter the winter was filled with disease and death at one point only seven were even well enough to stand and get water for the others half 51 of 102 died, no family was spared death a fire burned many of their clothes; by spring rations were only five kernels of corn a day...still they gave thanks a drought almost wiped out their crops before God sent rain In an often bitter, whiney self-entitled world, an attitude of gratitude among Christians should be one thing that sets us apart from the rest of the world. Deliberately choose to be thankful. Take time to write an actual handwritten note to someone in your life for whom you are thankful. Better yet, write a few of them. Instead of putting the usual comments and pictures on social media like Facebook, put pictures of people and places and things for which you give thanks. And some verses that remind you to be thankful. Read through the Psalms and join your prayer to those throughout the ages who have given thanks to God. Show God gratitude by putting Him first. Live these verses: I Thessalonians 5: Be joyful always; pray continually; Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. ~Pastor Josh

4 4 To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world Pastor Appreciation Thank You! We in the Johnson family have been blessed by the congregation in so many ways during October s Pastor Appreciation Month. Your cards, gifts, acts of kindness large and small and kind words have been wonderful blessings to us. Instead of coming to love and serve, it seems we are more often the recipients of your love and serving. One of the neatest parts of serving at Seminary is your kind words and deeds happen often not just in October. Other than the actual cards this month, the love, care and appreciate we received in October is a wonderful character trait at Seminary UMC. Thank you for this. November Sundays in Focus Preparing our Hearts for Worship Sunday, November 5 - All Saints Sunday -- Message: A Saint: Someone God s Light Shine s through Read Hebrews 11:1 to 12:3 Celebration of Holy Communion All Saints Sunday helps us remember those who pointed us to Jesus with words and deeds by letting God s light shine through their lives. We especially remember those who have died between last All Saints Day (November 1, 2016) and today. Pastor has the names of Barbara (AKA Ann ) Odier, Richard Augspurger, Merrill Swaidner and Carol VanAlstine. Please give him (or Joe Hiner) additional names and a photo or photos also appreciated. Sunday, November 12 Ordinary Time Message: Remember Who You Are Remember Whose You Are Read: Luke 17: Sunday, November 19 Thanksgiving Sunday Message A Tale of Two Thanksgivings Read I Thessalonians 5: Sunday, November 26 Christ the King Sunday (Advent starts this year on December 3 rd ) Message Tell Them I m Coming / Read I Thessalonians 4:13-5:11 United Methodist Women - Women of Faith On October 10 th eleven UMW Women of Faith met at the home of Shirley Wolf for their monthly meeting. The Priceless Things was read for an opening. Eleven names from the church family and community were lifted up in prayer. The list of names for the cheer baskets was reviewed and compiled. The cheer bags will be prepared at the November meeting and distributed. A Thank Offering will also be collected at that time. The World Thank Offering is one of United Methodist Women s five channels of undesignated Mission Giving, an opportunity for individuals to respond to God s abundance and grace with gifts of gratitude. The funds collected are used in the total program of mission and advocacy in the US and around the world. The World Thank Offering, giving freely and abundantly in response to God s goodness has been the way of life for UMW for over 130 years. Ann Spahr presented the lesson from The Book Of Mysteries by Jonathan Cahn titled The Book of Ages. Refreshments were served by the hostess and Carolyn Hartley-Johns won the door prize. NOTICE - Starting with the November 14 meeting Women of Faith will hold their meetings from 2:00pm to 4:00pm in the Wesley Gathering Room. It was decided this change would be best for those who cannot get out at night. Especially in the winter, when darkness comes so early. So mark your calendar with this change. December reminders: Cookie sale during Christmas in the Village December 1 & 2 Christmas Party-December 12-2:00pm in the Wesley Gathering Room ~Shirley Wolf, President Open Minds Open Hearts Open Doors
5 To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world 5 Country Store Christmas will soon be here, so we must make room for new items to be displayed. At this time we have many items reduced by 50%. This includes glassware, dishes and all stuffed toys. Please come in and see all the fun items. ~Carolyn Hartley-Johns Women of Faith - Cheer Baskets Our United Methodist Women group the WOF (Women of Faith) will get together to praise and give thanks to God for our Bounty on November 14 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm in the Wesley room. This is our annual Thank Offering. We also will be filling our Cheer Baskets to be delivered to members and friends in nursing homes and shut ins. Our ladies go to Covington Commons, Markle Nursing Home, Concord, Tipton House, Covington Manor, Warren Home, Heritage and Renaissance and people that are home bound. If you would like to submit a name to receive a basket you may contact a UMW member. We would appreciate any donations or contributions to fill these wonderful gifts of LOVE. They can consist of grocery items, homemade goodies, candy, cookies, snacks, small toiletries and of course, cash gifts. No nuts or fresh fruit. You may bring your items to the church before the November 14 th meeting. ~Carol Johnson Christmas Shopping Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Make it easy on yourself and order Scrip Cards AND support our kids' programs at church, at NO additional expense to you!!! Our church receives rebates for ALL Scrip cards that you order, or purchase from our supply of cards we offer every Sunday!!! Some examples of our rebates include 13% for Bath and Body Works, 8% for Barnes and Noble, 8% for Dicks Sporting Goods, 16% for Land's End, and 13% for O'Charleys, just to name a few!!! See Jenny Gross or Vicky Eisenhut for questions. Hanging of the Greens Please join our church family for the tradition of "Hanging of the Greens", a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ's birth! We will meet at the church at 3:00pm on Sunday November 26 to decorate the inside and outside of the church. In November we will be passing around a clipboard for you to sign up if you are able to attend this gathering. We will also be asking for monetary donations to help pay for our traditional fellowship meal. After the church is decorated we will be having a lasagna and salad dinner at approximately 5:00pm for all the decorators! If you have any questions please contact Nancy Hartley at or Vicky Eisenhut at Thank you in advance for keeping this tradition of preparing for our Savior's birth! Kid s Club Misses Mrs. Gross
6 6 To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world Thank you I want to thank all of you for the wonderful food brought in for our Family and Friends Sunday. There was plenty of food and love down in the Fellowship Hall. I also would like to thank BIG TIME Shirley Wolf, Vicky Eisenhut, Patty Swaidner and Marv Hathaway for the kitchen help. I would be remiss if I didn t thank my set up crew of Gary, Josh, Alex Beihold and Lily Johnson. They all came to my rescue as did the cleanup crew. On the same note, our church had a few funeral dinners the week of the 14 th. Sadly, Merrill Swaidner and Caroline Van Alstine went home to the Lord. Both services were lovely. Usually we take it for granted the funeral dinners will be taken care of by the UMW headed up by Patty Swaidner, Pam Sagers and Shirley Wolf. The shoes of Patty and Pam were big ones to fill as they were bidding good bye to Merrill. I hope we (WOF S) did you proud ladies as it was our honor. ~Carol Johnson November 3 November 4 November 7 November 8 November 9 November 10 November 14 November 14 November 19 November 19 November 22 Carol Johnson Kirsta Hiner Lisa Nicholson Mike Swaidner Austin Spahr Mary McCave Bill Quickery Steven Spahr Tina Haynes Judy Polzin Cara Vetor November 13 November 14 November 16 November 20 November 27 If your birthday or anniversary is missing from this list, or if you have just joined our church family, please contact Nancy Hartley at nan4hartley@comcast.net to be added to the list.
