1 In the Loop December 2016 Glencoe United Methodist Church December, 2016 GLENCOE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH I still get excited about the Christmas season. When our family gets together, Larry and I love to share Christmas stories with our children and grandchildren. During this past month, I have been thinking about a past Christmas that I had as a child that I will never forget. My sister and I were five and seven when we attended a Christmas party where my Father was employed. We went on a Sunday afternoon before Christmas mainly to see Santa. I couldn t wait for the party. My sister and I sang Christmas songs for other children and their parents. In order for my sister and me to perform, we were lifted up on a barrel to reach the microphone. We were told that we had to sing loud so Santa could hear us, because he would be coming soon. Our reward was when Santa did arrive he brought bags of toys for all the boys and girls. That was a special Christmas that I will always remember. Psalm 98:4-6 let us practice this during the Christmas season. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth: break forth into Joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the Ruler, the Lord! Jesus Christ is the reason for the season without him there would be no EASTER. I wanted to share with all my friends at Glencoe a Christmas story that I love. Two hundred years ago, in the early 19th Century, as astonishing as it may seem, Christmas in Great Britain had become almost extinct. The London Times newspaper did not mention Christmas once between 1790 and 1835, not once! However, Charles Dickens was instrumental in reviving Christmas during the Victorian era. He wrote his book, A Christmas Carol in 1843 because unemployment and famine was so widespread that 1 in 10 people were as poor as you can possibly imagine, or worse than we can probably could imagine. Dickens wanted to challenge the government and the wealthy to act with generosity and with compassion and so his character Ebenezer Scrooge brings that challenge into focus. Nowadays, not many people want to be like Scrooge (at the start of the book). I guess we all hope we can become more like the joyful, genial, generous Scrooge from the last scenes of the book. Dickens book helped to revive the Christmas traditions of generosity within his time and in ours today. From my Family to Your Family, I wish everyone a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! LOVE TO ALL! KEEP CHRIST ALIVE IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE! PASTOR SELENA SCOTT

5 Letter/ to Clergy from Bishop: November 23, 2016 Dear Colleagues in Ministry: This brief letter is sent to you as a courtesy, sharing an interfaith invitation by Jennifer E. Copeland, Ph.D., Executive Director North Carolina Council of Churches, to religious leaders similar to myself, to sign a statement of encouragement calling on all persons of faith to work for reconciliation and peace following an increase in the number of violent encounters within the last few weeks. This is not a political statement related to the Presidential election, it is a request for all communities of faith to shape their worship and services, December 2-4, to reflect our commitment to be people of peace. I have agreed to offer my support as the Bishop of our Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church because I am committed to living into the Canticle of Zechariah, "To guide our feet into the way of peace" (Luke 1:79), and to affirm John Wesley's guidance to live a biblical life, "do no harm, do all the good you can, and remain close to God through prayer, scripture, and all the means of grace." This document, along with the signatures of all persons of faith who have signed it, will be made public in a few days. I wanted you to have knowledge of my desire to join persons of faith as we work for greater peace within all our communities.
