1 April 2015 In the Loop Glencoe United Methodist Church Newsletter 2 3 What s happening when? Birthdays, Anniversaries, Worship Assistants, Bound Youth, etc Read all about it! LOTS of updates for you: playground, Reading Initiative, connectional news. 4 5 People are Important UMW, SAM S Club, Holocaust Remembrance, Leaders, Grins Camp GuilRock Super close, super good natural environment space for God to speak to us! Ed-itorial: Hope Springs Eternal For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come. Song of Songs 2:11-12 April is the month of resurrection. The days get longer, the sun gets warmer, and the once cold ground brings forth life. Tulips, daffodils, dogwoods, and azaleas all grow in April bringing color to the gray, brown, and blues of winter. It is no accident that we celebrate Easter during April (most years). Not only does the Resurrection coincide with the Jewish Passover, but Christ s conquering death brings hope to our lives like a tulip springing forth from dark soil. For sports fans, like myself, the first week of April brings the climax of basketball season, the beginning of baseball season, and my favorite golf tournament, The Masters. I watch it on TV not just for the golf, but to see the beauty of the course, the multiple shades of green, and the flowers. As we awaken from our winter slumber, this month brings joy and hope. In this month s issue of In The Loop, we celebrate the new and exciting initiatives that fulfill our vision of remembering the past, while growing in the future and cultivating Christ s kingdom. We celebrate the growth of our church! Throughout April and May, we will be receiving new members into the church in a variety of ways. First, on April 12, we will be baptizing Keegan Knox Taylor, son of Kellye and Kenny Taylor. Kenny will be baptized too. As a child, he attended Mt. Hope United Church of Christ. (more growing on page 2) s on a f Camp GuilRock Sunday, April 26 On April 26 at 9am and 11am, Mark Christy of Camp GuilRock will share how camping ministry is transforming the lives of young people throughout the district. Their vision is to develop a Christian outdoor education and spiritual growth camp. The mission statement is: Discover Creation, Experience God, Grow in Faith. New to Guilrock this year is a ropes course. It is a tool that helps build teamwork and communication among youth and other groups. We will receive a love offering for GuilRock that day. Moreover, Mark will share how you can contribute to this vital ministry through volunteering your time and talents. Make sure you attend the Cardboard Regatta on May 2! Details inside this issue of In The Loop. 1

2 (continued from page 1) Later in April, Pam & Ron Reaver will be joining Glencoe UMC by transferring their membership from Hinshaw UMC in Greensboro. They are both retired from FedEx and enjoy caring for their granddaughter, Keri, who attends with them regularly. They are neighbors of Lori & Tom Perri. The weekend of April is also the Confirm 15 Retreat at Lake Junaluska. Daniel Miller, Steven William Ripley, Austyn & Bryan Frederick, & Jake Resor will attend this retreat in preparation for confirmation on Pentecost, May 23. Steven & Austyn will make public confessions of faith after learning more about the Christian Life during Sunday School. Steven s parents, Corinna & Phillip Love, will be joining that Sunday. Our youth group experience will grow as Bound United Methodist Youth Community is bound for Glencoe. Beginning April 12, the conglomerate of Morehead, Stokesdale, and Glencoe youth will meet here from April- June. We are bound to Christ and one another as we grow in God s love and serve our community. We will grow in our knowledge of other faith traditions. On April 13, S.A.M. s Club will sponsor a trip to St. Francis Springs Catholic Retreat Center for a tour followed by lunch out. On April 15, Kirstin Thomas will lead us to the Holocaust Memorial Day at Temple Emanuel. On April 19, the Holocaust Memorial will be part of our worship service and a special Sunday School class. 3 Playground Update by Erica Locklear 10 Highlights from United Methodist News Service at * Reaction continues on Indiana religious freedom law * #BringChange this World Malaria Day (April 25) * Volunteers needed for General Conference 2016 * UMs train teachers for reopening Sierra Leone schools * Newscope to cease publication (after 43 years) * General Council on Finance and Administration meets, does mission work in the Philippines * UM Women helping women in Cote d Ivoire * Churches offer free formal wear, God s love, to teens * Former GBOD staffer agrees to repay church agency * Record number of conferences at 100% giving (apportionments) FREE food for kids under 18 The Rockingham County Summer Meal Program will be back June 15- August 15. Free breakfast & hot lunch at Morehead HS, Western Rock Middle, & Moss St. Elementary. Contact Stephanie Wilson with the Kennedy Foundation at for more info. On March 24, Preacher Ed, Nana Lisa Shepard and I attended a meeting with Calvin Allen and Brandy Bynum who work for Rural Forward NC. They provide free consulting services to the leaders of the Healthy Places NC counties. They saw our grant proposal for Kaboom and wanted to help us pursue a playground for the future children of our church and community. These wonderful, kind people discussed a few more ideas. For example, we can work together to reestablish the old walking trail. The fact that a young person is leading this initiative may qualify us for other grants. Rural Forward will contact us again in about two weeks to inform us on what grants or foundations would help us build a fun and safe playground that will last for a long time. Bethany Elementary Reads for Success with RIF & Glencoe UMC by Marie Dixon Several months ago before Steve and I retired, we talked about what we wanted to do in retirement. One thing for me was volunteering at Bethany Elementary to be a reading buddy for students who needed extra reading time. Well 2 ½ weeks into retirement Pastor Ed called me to discuss the possibility of getting a Duke Endowment grant to start a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program at Bethany Elementary and asked if I would be interested. This is just a simple example of how God works in our lives!!! To find out more, Pastor Ed, Onita Dixon, Jackie Linville, Shanna Locklear, Lisa Shepard and I attended a dinner and presentation at Christ UMC, Greensboro. Judy Cheatham, VP of Literary Services at RIF in Washington, DC spoke. What is RIF? RIF is a program that provides books to children and also books & material for lesson plans for teachers and media centers. RIF tracked 33,000 children nationwide in 173 school districts with about 80% from high poverty districts. Without giving you a lot of statistics, the most underserved school districts showed the most gains including rural populations like Bethany Elementary. The lowest performing children showed the most growth. Why do we need a RIF program at Bethany? Bethany has 430 students and a large percentage of these students need extra help and support. During the summer, most economically- disadvantaged children fall behind in reading skills because of lack of books and learning opportunities. Educators call this an achievement gap. RIF s studies show that these children lose between 1-3 months of reading/learning skills in the summer. Bethany Principal Elizabeth Covell says our kids are growing. If we teach them to read early, they will have a comfort level with it and enjoy it later in life. Children who do not learn to read early will fall behind their peers. Early intervention is key, if children can read, they can do anything: science, math, engineering, etc. Also, community involvement (like Glencoe) will reinforce suggestions made to parents to help children succeed. How will this program work? If the Duke grant is approved it will be for 3 years beginning fall The first year every 1-3 grade child will receive 2 books each at fall & spring break and 4 books before summer vacation. Students select books that interest them. 4 th grade will be added in 2016; 5 th grade in At the end of the 3yr grant every child at Bethany will receive at least 8 books of their very own. We will also have a summer enrichment program at Bethany School or at our church. We will need volunteers or mentors from our church to be reading/lunch buddies for some students at Bethany. This would involve about an hour per week. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Pastor Ed or me. We need you all! The Duke Endowment grant application has been submitted and at this time we are awaiting approval. I hope you will pray about this program. All children are God s children and I believe we should help in any way we can!. 3

SAM s Club 9am Monday April 13 Trip to St. Francis Springs in Stoneville. This inter-faith retreat center is open to groups and individuals for spiritual growth. Holocaust Remembrance by Kirstin Thomas On Wednesday, April 15 at 7:00pm, Temple Emanuel in Greensboro will be hosting their yearly Erev Yom Ha Shoah Service (Holocaust Remembrance Day). During the event, we will listen to a Holocaust survivor s story, honor the lives lost and the ones that were spared, and remember that we must continue to work to ensure that the Holocaust never happens again. Please join us to honor the innocent lives involved, and especially now, learn why we must be aware, watchful, and look out for our brothers and sisters all across the world. First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me. Martin Niemöeller, Protestant Pastor ( ) We will remember at Glencoe on Sunday, April 19. 4

5 SECOND ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA Saturday, May 2 + Boat Crew Report to GuilRock at 9:00am on May 2 to register, get set up and be ready to race. + Crew Cheerleaders Family and friends, please come cheer on our awesome crew and boat! The Race begins at 10:00am with all kinds of special boats. You won t want to miss this fun!!! + Lunch Will Be Served at Lakeside Pavilion: hamburgers, nachos, hot dogs, baked goods, and drinks for reasonable prices. Duke Intern News Farewell and Hello! + Thank you Jake Resor for serving our church this school year. Best wishes as you hike part of the Appalachian Trail this summer! + Welcome Brett Stuvland for this summer. He will begin in May. How Can you help Camp GUILROCK? Camp GuilRock has provided a beautiful natural environment for spiritual and educational growth for nearly 60 years! Thousands of people have benefited from the Wesley Pavilion, Lakeside Pavilion, rustic lodges, campsites, swimming pool, canoeing, fishing, basketball court, volleyball court, disc golf range, nature trails and now the low ropes challenge course. Recent restructuring of the WNC Conference of The UMC in 2012 has greatly affected our church camps. We no longer receive a per- member apportionment that was used to help in operating expenses. While we do request and receive funds through grants, the lack of unrestricted funding has created a financial hardship on us. While our various fundraisers do raise some funds, more money is desperately needed. Please carefully and prayerfully consider what you can do as a church, as a family and as a member of The United Methodist Church to help this beautiful piece of God s earth flourish as it was intended. Truly, no gift is too small. Sincerely, Hilton Peel, President & Mark Christy, Executive Director List of needs * Tithe monthly to Camp GuilRock * Have a fundraiser with the proceeds to benefit the camp * Collect change from the congregation once a month * Have a love offering for Camp GuilRock * Become A Friend of Camp GuilRock * Sponsor our events: our annual golf tournament or regatta * Make a donation in memory or honor of a loved one * Offer any resources you have to the camp: gravel, dirt, lawn mowing/landscaping help, stump grinders, dump trucks, outdoor equipment, etc. * Organize or help at a work day. This requires 3-4 people approximately 2-3 hours per week. Mowing is done mid- week to avoid weekend activities. Contact Tommy Matherly at or tommy629@hotmail.com * Volunteer to be your church s contact to receive information about Camp GuilRock and ensure that it is passed on to your congregation through your newsletter, website, phone tree, appropriate church staff, etc. Contact Cheryl Lewis at or Cheryl@hardwoodstore.com * Put Camp GuilRock on your prayer list. 5
