1 Trinity UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN RED SPRINGS May 2011 Happy Birthday KJV! This year marks the 400th birthday of the King James Version of the Bible. The 1631 version of the Bible was born in a time of conflict. James took the throne of England in The Anglicans were feuding with a group of Protestant reformers called the Puritans. King James sided with the Anglicans because they posed the least amount of threat to his authority as king. However, as politicians do, he threw out an olive branch to the Puritans: he agreed to commission a new translation of the Bible that took seriously the Greek and Hebrew texts. He also hoped that it would be a version of the BIble that 2009 would unify his kingdom and would be more accessible to everyone. Of course, the Bible did not unify James kingdom and it didn t solve the problems that the Anglicans and the Puritans had. However, it has had an amazing impact on the world today. This Bible, for four hundred years, has made the Word of God accessible to countless millions. It is beautifully written. For me, at least, the 23rd Psalm sounds best in the KJV. However, the King James Version has it s problems. It is not the most accurate translation. 400 years of study that have followed the book s introduction have shown glaring translation issues. And with any translation there are problems. For example, in Psalm 119, there is a word dabar that occurs 22 times. Dabar means: speech, word, matter, affair, act, event, cause, and thing. It means these all at the same time. In Hebrew, the meaning all rolls together. In Hebrew a word and a thing are the same. A word actually makes things happen in Hebrew while in English words and things are separate. The translation of word just doesn t capture all of the meaning in Hebrew. That is why I like to read the same passage in multiple versions because they often use different words. It helps to get the full understanding of God s Word. There are also some amusing errors in the KJV. In the original edition, one of the Ten Commandments was Thou shalt commit adultery. Yes, that bible told us that cheating on a spouse was compulsory rather than forbidden. That edition is now referred to as the Wicked Bible. Another version says, Printers have persecuted me without cause. Of course, the typesetters meant princes. In 1795 another version told us that Jesus said, Let the children first be killed (Mark 7:27). Jesus actually wanted the children filled instead of killed. Happy Birthday KJV! 3 Meeting Schedule United Methodist Men We will see you at 6:30pm on Wednesday, May 4th for our dinner and program. Good eating and good fellowship! United Methodist Women s Circle Meetings Circle 1 meets at the Parsonage at 400 E. 3rd Ave. At 10am. Circle 2 meets at 1pm at the home of Nancy McPhaul at 403 N. Edinborough St. There have been requests for an evening Circle. This will start up in the Fall! Walking is Good for You! And so is laughing: * I joined a health club last year; spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently, you have to go there. * Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional five months in a nursing home at $5,000 per month. * The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say, "Well, she looks good, doesn't she?" * I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people who annoy me.in A MOMENT FOR MISSION Jesus said to her, Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to God; but go to my friends and say to them, I am ascending to God John 20:17a, An Inclusive- Language Lectionary If Breanna Dahl walks into Chicago s Granville United Methodist Church and finds 20 people she s never met sleeping or showering there, she isn t surprised. As mission coordinator, she probably arranged their visit. These youth are staying at Red Line Ministries as part of a mission trip. Red Line Ministries is an initiative of three Chicago congregations: United Church of Rogers Park, Granville and Epworth United Methodist Church. It s really exciting to think about doing ministry cooperatively among three congregations, Dahl said. She loves engaging people and being a network of urban congregations. Often, alone we don t have the resources.... We re asking, How can we work together to have stronger ministries that can reach more people? Transforming young people, congregations and the world is the key. Red Line Ministries recently launched the Urban Mission Center, and the first group arrived March 20. We don t want [people] to serve in the soup kitchen and go away saying, we served dinner. Dahl said. We want them to serve in the soup kitchen and then learn about hunger and poverty. We want them to learn about the issues so they feel equipped to address some of the systemic problems in our society that make us need soup kitchens. 3 Native American Ministries Sunday May 8th We celebrate this Sunday every year on the third Sunday of Easter and collect a special offering. This Sunday is an effort to recognize the contributions that Native Americans have given to our country and our church. Your contributions... To the Native American Ministries Sunday enable ministries to occur right here in our own county like Sacred Pathways which feeds, supports, and encourages our neighbors to grow in their relationship with Christ because fifty percent of the offering remains in the annual conference to develop and strengthen local Native American ministries. The rest of the funds are then distributed equally between the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry to provide scholarships for American Indians attending the church's schools of theology and the Native American Urban Initiative of the Board of Global Ministries. Other educational tracks include social justice and the urban community, housing justice, and the intersections of oppression: racism, sexism, classism and homophobia.

But, if you are shopping and see a deal on Rice - Pasta - Drink boxes, we would love to have them! The team also needs a person willing to assist in the kitchen one Saturday a month. WESLEY PINES invites us to an OPEN HOUSE to celebrate the opening of the new campus, Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 2:00pm to 5:00 pm in the afternoon. The Dedication Ceremony begins at 2pm in the McMillan Fellowship Center. Tours and a Reception to follow. Sanctuary Servants Acolytes for May Volunteers needed Liturgists for May 1 Terry Powers 8 Wilson Ray 15 Todd Rentz 22 Jackie Rentz 29 Mark Merryman Thank you for your service to our community of faith! A note from Our Lay Leader: "...Truly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me." Matthew 25:40 Trinity is compassionate. Our love for one another is tangible. Our love and outreach to others is growing. How far can we go? The possibilities are endless when congregations are empowered through faith, scripture, and God s love. Not long ago I read about an outreach ministry called Operation Inasmuch, Inc. The more I read, the more I was convinced Trinity could be an Inasmuchparticipating church. Plus, collaborating with other churches, Inasmuch events would, without a doubt, unite believers in serving the greater good in Red Springs. Operating beyond denominations, Operation Inasmuch, Inc. mobilizes believers in their community. One of the core values of Operation Inasmuch is seeing the local church as the hope of the world and the means by which compassion ministry is best conducted. Their mission statement says it all: Operation Inasmuch, Inc. empowers congregations worldwide to catalyze community ministry with the Operation Inasmuch model and create a culture of compassion ministry. Take a look at Operation Inasmuch, and see if you agree: 5
