welcome! Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish, a Roman Catholic community that gathers day by day, week by week, to know and make known the grace of God. By means of this abundant grace, we enjoy a diverse and close-knit parish family young, old, rich, poor, of various ethnic origins and differing backgrounds. From our extraordinary music program to a growing children s faith formation program; from the various liturgical ministries to the many opportunities for social outreach that the parish provides, Saint Cecilia is a vibrant community of faith, centered on prayer and worship that tries to keep the Gospel close to heart and to live by Jesus teachings. Saint Cecilia Parish was established in At that time the Back Bay section of Boston along Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street was the residential section of the Yankee aristocracy. The maids ( Irish working out girls ) and coachmen who served these residents had long requested a church of their own. When Archbishop Williams granted their request and carved the parish from the territory of the Cathedral, they built a magnificent church out of their meager earnings. The church was dedicated on April 22, Its architecture is Romanesque, XII Century Norman. The main altar, notable for its massive simplicity, was carved from a single block of white Carrara marble. The painting in the center reredos is a reproduction of da Vinci s The Last Supper, and the dome above is an array of 24K gold rosettes. For the sixtieth anniversary celebration in 1954, a massive renovation project was undertaken. During this renovation, a statue of Pope Saint Pius X (canonized that same year) was imported from Italy and placed on the right side of the sanctuary. Above the statue are paintings from Pius life. On the left side is a statue of Saint Patrick, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Boston, and above it are three scenes from his life. Fourteen circular and sixteen square panels adorn the nave and arches of the church. The square panels are decorated with the symbols of Our Lady taken from the Litany of Loreto and the circular ones with symbols taken from the lives of the apostles. The great window of the Assumption framed by the two oak cases of the organ was installed in 1954 (the Marian Year) in spaces originally designed for windows but not until then used. The original organ of 24 stops was built in 1902 by the Hutchings-Votey Organ Company, Opus 1465, and was rebuilt in 1954 with 32 stops. In 1998, Timothy Smith and Theodore Gilbert began a massive reconstruction of the organ. The current Smith & Gilbert Organ of 4 manuals, 50 ranks, and 2,926 pipes was dedicated on the Feast of Saint Cecilia, November 22, Today we are experiencing something of an awakening within these old walls. We recently completed a major renovation, our numbers are increasing, and we continue to grow in our commitment to issues of peace, justice, and service to our neighbors, both near and far. We ve been right here on Belvidere Street, in the same building for 127 years, but that does not mean that life here is stale, stagnant, or even predictable. We are proud to be entrusted with the legacy of Saint Cecilia Parish, where everything is the same, yet always changing; where we honor tradition while embracing the future; where God s love makes all things new.

CARDINAL SEÁN P. O'MALLEY, OFM CAP. STATEMENT ON ORLANDO TRAGEDY As our society faces the massive and violent assault on human life in Orlando on Sunday, the Archdiocese of Boston offers and encourages prayers on behalf of those who were killed in the attack, those who were injured, and all their families and friends. At this time our prayers are also with Bishop Noonan and the Diocese of Orlando, with the wider community of Orlando, and for our country, once again confronted by the face of hatred expressed through gun violence. Yet another lament about the prevalence of guns throughout our society seems a pale response to the horror of the crimes in Orlando. With each repeated occurrence of mass shootings in schools, theaters, churches and social settings it appears increasingly clear that any hope for thwarting these tragedies must begin with more effective legislation and enforcement of who has access to guns and under what conditions. However, legislation alone will not be sufficient as there are wider and deeper forces at work in these attacks. The United States proudly upholds its long-standing tradition of being open and welcoming to those in need of a safe haven. Our country greatly benefits from human creativity and achievement cultivated without distinction of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality or any other differentiating characteristic. From a multitude of differences we have sought unity. We must meet the challenges of combining freedom, pluralism and unity in our increasingly diverse society if the United States is to continue to be a beacon of hope to the world. Achieving the unity which promotes peaceful coexistence means addressing those deeper forces which threaten our well-being. In all aspects of our lives, including our government, the private sector, our faith communities and our schools, we must be aware of and reflect on how we think and speak about those who are different from us. And we cannot allow ourselves to be defeated by the worst instincts in human nature, by efforts to divide us based on our differences or by an immobilizing fear. Defeat in the face of the tragedies that we have seen in Florida, Texas, Colorado, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Arizona is not conceivable. Resistance is necessary; resolution is imperative. The resources to resist and the courage of resolve are on display each day in our society. Those who risked their lives in the midst of the assault on Sunday, the first responders and the friends at each other s side in the midst of the terror, symbolize the kind of generosity of spirit which makes our country great. Together let us go forward with the commitment to work for the meaningful change that will help our country and all her people to live in safety and peace.

Dear friends, It is difficult to find words to adequately express the profound sadness we all feel over the senseless and tragic massacre that took place last weekend in Orlando; so many young and innocent lives struck down in an unspeakable act of hatred and violence. I am also very mindful of the fear and pain that is felt in a particular way by the LGBT members of our own community. It happens, now all too often, that we turn on the news and see another mass shooting in our country and we are left feeling shocked, helpless, angry and numb. How many more times will we have to do this? As people of faith, as followers and lovers of God Who is Peace, how do we respond? What do we think? What are we called to do? Well, last night I was invited (along with our seminarian Kyle Jordan) to participate with clergy and others from different denominations and faith traditions to an ecumenical prayer service, Orlando: An Interfaith Sharing of Lament, Solidarity and Hope at Emmanuel Church and the Central Reform Temple on Newbury St. At one point during the service, the chorus sang from the musical Carousel, You ll Never Walk Alone. As I read the sixteen names on my portion of the list of the young victims, I thought to myself that each one of these persons had, at some point, possibly walked alone or felt like they were walking alone regarding coming to grips with who they were or who they loved. I thought of what it might be like for any one of us to suffer violence or hatred from another simply because of fear. Maybe it s our skin color. Maybe it s our religious beliefs. Maybe it s our physical disabilities and challenges or strengths or sexual orientation or ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Maybe it s because we re simply just different from somebody else. Whatever the difference, each of us quite probably, feels like we have walked alone at one point or another in life because of being different. Being different evokes in others all kinds of reactions. None of us knows what went on in the heart and mind of the shooter. We don t know how mental illness, unresolved matters of the heart, violence or pure evil reign in others. But we can begin to look at issues that are worth talking about as uncomfortable as they may be as polarizing as they can be: sexuality, gun control, politics, mental illness, radical fundamentalism, Islam, Christianity, violence in the name of God, justice, prayer, grieving and forgiveness. In this climate of very polarized political and civil discourse, how can we be civilized, listen to each other and learn from our experiences, especially the most painful ones like this one, as we go forward? How do we respond? And what do we think? How does each of us feel about someone who is different from us? What are we teaching our kids? and what may they be teaching us?? How are we or have we been as church? Are we fear-based and therefore breeding contempt for those who are different from us? Are we open, inclusive, less judgmental and more loving with those who are different? It s not always easy to look inside ourselves and see where we re at with these things. In his statement following the attack, Bishop Robert Lynch of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Florida wrote: sadly, it is religion, including our own, which targets mostly verbally, and also often breeds, contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people. Attacks today on LGBT men and women often plant the seeds of contempt, then hatred, which can ultimately lead to violence. Those women and men who were mowed down early yesterday morning were all made in the image and likeness of God. We teach that. We should believe that. We must stand for that. What are we called to do? Pope Francis says that we need fervent dialogue so that we might know and understand one another better. He urges us to free ourselves from a rigid idealism that prevents reconciliation between each other. Where there is rigidity caused by fear, there is no room for prophesy or fresh air or new and fresh ways of looking at issues, challenges or even one another. Today, we continue to pray for the victims who now rest in the arms of a loving God. May all those killed and wounded know they will never walk alone; may they be joined to the great cloud of witnesses who have walked before them the great company of saints. And as we pray for their families and friends, let us pray that we will have the courage to do what the gospel commands to engage the world with the message of love, understanding and ultimately the challenging call of forgiveness and reconciliation (even though we might not be there) so that all of God s children, no matter one s gender, sexual orientation, race or religion, find the world a safer and more generous and loving place. Peace, Fr. John

This week we celebrate the baptism anniversary of David Waters (June 24). May the Lord continue to bless David with the grace to live out his baptismal call. Happy feast day, David! Congratulations, Nicola! Nicola Henderson graduated on June 9, from Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. She plans to attend Occidental College in California this autumn. Well done, Nicola! Happy Father s Day! Today is Father s Day a good time to give thanks to God for our dads, living and deceased. Some years ago, a study demonstrated that while spirituality is transmitted to children primarily through a mother s influence, religious "practice" was most effectively passed along through a father s example. Happy Father s Day to all who are celebrating! Evening Prayer on Tuesday This Tuesday is the memorial of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. In commemoration of this feast, we will pray Evening Prayer at six-thirty. All are welcome to attend. Happy Summer! Summer officially begins tomorrow. This period around the June solstice is known as midsummer and Midsummer's Day is June 24 the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist is one of the oldest festivals of the Christian church and long ago helped to Christianize the pagan summer solstice rites. Pray for a happy and safe summer for all members of our community. Next Week's Special Collection Next week s special collection supports the work of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Together with a diverse network of collaborators, they serve the elderly poor locally in Somerville. They offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself. For more information please visit For the Victims of the Orlando Massacre Once again, we find ourselves reeling from an act of violence that is almost unimaginable and yet all too familiar. Pray for the victims of the Orlando nightclub shootings, especially those who died and those who grieve them. Pray that the abiding and compassionate love of God will be present to those whose lives have been shattered. Welcome, Kyle! We are so pleased to welcome Kyle Jordan to the parish! Kyle is a seminarian studying at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, MA and he will be with us for four weeks. Kyle is an associate member of the Society of African Missions and spent two and a half years as a lay missionary in Ghana, West Africa working for the Environmental Concern Office. Kyle also coordinated youth ministry programs in the Archdiocese of Cape Coast, Ghana. Kyle tells us that he excels at horizontal prayer, binge coffee drinking, and being easily distracted. He claims that one of his finer qualities is learning from the mistakes of others who have taken his advice. God willing, Kyle will be ordained in the spring of Be sure to say hello to Kyle and help him feel welcome and at home here. 7

SAINT CECILIA PARISH Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice For the Victims of the Orlando Massacre Please join us this Thursday evening, June 23, at 7:00 for a Mass in remembrance of the victims of last week's shooting in Orlando. Validated parking for $11 will be available at the Hynes Auditorium Garage on Dalton Street. THE SAINT CECILIA MERCY BOWL Our good Pope Francis has declared this year a Year of Mercy a year during which we are invited to consciously keep mercy before our eyes, in our hearts, and in our behavior. How shall we, here at Saint Cecilia, encourage acts of mercy during this year? We know that the "works of mercy" whether spiritual (e.g., praying, forgiving, sharing knowledge, being patient, etc.) or corporal (e.g., feeding the hungry, sharing clothing, providing shelter, etc.) are part of our daily lives already, but Francis, during this Year of Mercy, has asked us to be more attentive and deliberate about this. These acts, whether spiritual or corporal, make tangible our love for one another. We know that this is what Jesus calls us to do: "Love one another as I have loved you." To help us become more consciously merciful this year, we invite you to reflect on and commit to performing acts of mercy and to share your actions anonymously by writing them on an index card found near our Mercy Bowl located on the gifts table located in the back of the church. We encourage all parishioners to participate in this, including children. Do not include your name on the card, just what you did or plan to do (e.g., carried your neighbor's groceries; volunteered at a shelter; showing kindness and patience to someone who is difficult; praying for someone in particular; sharing your toys with your brother or sister; etc.). We will from time to time share some of these works of mercy with the Saint Cecilia community via the bulletin, thereby encouraging one another to live the love we are called to have for one another. We will continue this project throughout the next six months. When the Year of Mercy draws to a close on the Solemnity of Christ the King (November 20), we will bundle up the index cards with ribbon and place them on the altar as part of the offertory procession at Mass. It's that simple. Let us encourage one another to be a presence of mercy in our world. Volunteer Meeting for Open Doors Ministry Sunday, June 26 after the 9:30 a.m. Mass The Open Doors Ministry at Saint Cecilia is a response to Pope Francis' call for us to open ourselves and our communities to those on the margins, to each other, and thus, to God, through these openings. In order to keep the church open these days, we must have people here to ensure an atmosphere of welcome hospitality and to be sure that proper respect is maintained in the church. If enough parishioners participate, we might be able to keep the church open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For now, we are looking for volunteers for each of the following two hour blocks: 10:00 a.m. to noon, noon to 2:00, and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. If you think you might be interested in this ministry, or if you have any questions, please join us on June 26 or contact Linda Jenkins and Amy Paulin at amy.paulin11@ gmail.com. If I walk out into the field, look! those slain by the sword; If I enter the city, look! victims of violence... Why have you struck us a blow that cannot be healed? We wait for peace, to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes instead. Do not reject us, for your name's sake, do not disgrace your glorious throne. Remember your covenant with us, and break it not. Jeremiah 14:

saint cecilia parish WELCOMING THE STRANGER Many of us were moved on hearing that Pope Francis, while visiting a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, brought twelve Syrian Muslims back to the Vatican with him on the papal plane. The Pope addressed the refugees and said, "As people of faith, we wish to join our voices to speak out on your behalf. We hope that the world will heed these scenes of tragic and indeed desperate need, and respond in a way worthy of our common humanity." Inspired by the Pope's words and actions, Saint Cecilia parish is working with Catholic Charities to assist two Muslim Syrian families who have relocated to the Greater Boston area. With no friends or relatives in the United States, they have a great many needs. At this point in time, the parish has offered to provide them with supermarket gift cards so that they will have food while their applications for political asylum are processed. If you would like to purchase gift cards to Market Basket specifically and no more than $25 per card please feel free to drop them in the offertory basket. If you do not live near a Market Basket and cannot purchase a gift card, you can also help by making a check for $25 payable to Saint Cecilia Parish and putting it in the offertory. Please write Syrian Refugees in the memo line. DRIVERS NEEDED Each month parishioners have the opportunity to pick up donated meat, dairy products, and produce from three local supermarkets and deliver it to either Catholic Charities' Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester or the Pine Street Inn in the South End. This vital ministry takes place at 7:30 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday morning and on Sundays can be completed in time to attend the 9:30 a.m. parish Mass. We need drivers for all the Saturdays and Sundays in June. SAINT C's YOUNG ADULTS! Church and Scripture History 101 Tuesday, June 21 I 7:30 p.m. Are you a little rusty on your Catholic history? 11 SAINT CECILIA PARISH Saints Among Us Swedish Nurse Who Saved Jews During the Holocaust Is Canonized The Times of Israel Pope canonizes Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad, who hid 60 Jewish people for half a year in a convent in Rome during the Holocaust A Swedish nurse who converted to Catholicism and helped dozens of Jews during the Holocaust was made a saint on Sunday, June 5, Sweden s first in six centuries. Pope Francis canonized Mary Elizabeth Hesselblad at a ceremony in Saint Peter s Square that took place just a few months before he is due to visit Sweden, a largely secular country. She had been beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000 after a 30-year campaign. Hesselblad is only the second Swede to receive sainthood, following Saint Bridget 625 years ago. She reportedly saved more than 60 Jews during World War II, hiding families inside her convent in Rome for about six months before the war ended. Yad Vashem, Israel s Holocaust remembrance center, recognized her actions when it honored her as one of the Righteous Among the Nations in 2004, an award bestowed upon non-jews who helped Jews during the Holocaust. Sunday s ceremony was attended by Sweden s Culture Minister Alice Bah-Kuhnke and more than 250 Swedish pilgrims. Hesselblad was born in 1870 into a Lutheran family with 13 children before heading to the United States in her teens in search of better economic opportunities. (Article continues on page 12) 11

SAINT CECILIA PARISH (Article continued from page 11) She landed in New York and became a nurse. She converted to Catholicism in 1902 and left for Rome two years later. In Rome, she settled with the Carmelites, where she took the habit of the Bridgetines, an order founded in the 14th century by Saint Bridget, who was canonized in Hesselblad restored the order in Rome in 1911 and brought it back to Sweden a decade later, as part of her effort to unite all Christians and breathe new life into an order and a religion that had been languishing after the Reformation. She is credited with promoting peace between Catholics and non-catholics, and for pushing other Christians and non-christians alike toward the Catholic Church. Mother Elizabeth died in Rome in 1957 at the age of 87. Pope Francis is due to visit Sweden a country with just 150,000 Catholics from October 31 to November 1 to mark the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, which will be celebrated in Francis also canonized Polish priest Jan Papczynski, who took on the religious name of Stanislaus of Jesus and Mary, on Sunday. join camp coasa! 13 SAINT CECILIA PARISH Orlando, Orlando We Love You By ROBERT LYNCH Today I write with a heavy heart arising from the tragedy which occurred in the early morning hours yesterday at a Gay, Lesbian, Transgender night club in Orlando, our neighbor to the east. Yesterday, the best I could muster was to send these words by text message to my brother, Bishop John Noonan, bishop of Orlando: John, I am so sorry. With love to and for all. Today with a new dawn, I once again have some thoughts which I wish to share. Our founding parents had no knowledge of assault rifles which are intended to be weapons of mass destruction. In crafting the second amendment to the Constitution which I affirm, they thought only of the most awkward of pistols and heavy shotguns. I suspect they are turning in their graves if they can but glimpse at what their words now protect. It is long past time to ban the sale of all assault weapons whose use should be available only to the armed forces. If one is truly pro-life, then embrace this issue also and work for the elimination of sales to those who would turn them on innocents. Second, sadly it is religion, including our own, which targets, mostly verbally, and also often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people. Attacks today on LGBT men and women often plant the seed of contempt, then hatred, which can ultimately lead to violence. Those women and men who were mowed down early yesterday morning were all made in the image and likeness of God. We teach that. We should believe that. We must stand for that. Without yet knowing who perpetrated the PULSE mass murders, when I saw the Imam come forward at a press conference yesterday morning, I knew that somewhere in the story there would be a search to find religious roots. While deranged people do senseless things, all of us observe, judge and act from some kind of religious background. Singling out people for victimization because of their religion, their sexual orientation, their nationality must be offensive to God s ears. It has to stop also. Third, responding by barring people of Muslim only faith from entering the country solely because of their stated faith until they can be checked out is un-american, even in these most challenging of times and situations. There are as many good, peace loving and God fearing Muslims to be found as Catholics or Methodists or Mormons or Seventh Day Adventists. The devil and devilish intent escape no religious iteration. Will we ever learn? I hope so but until the above three points are taken seriously by society, sadly, tragically, we can expect more Orlandos. May the souls of those faithful departed who met their God early Sunday morning rest in peace, and those recovering from deep wounds heal, help and hope. Bishop Robert Nugent Lynch is the fourth Bishop of St. Petersburg, Florida. As a priest, Bishop Lynch served the Archdiocese of Miami as associate pastor of St. James in North Miami, and rector and president of St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami. His most recent assignment before coming to St. Petersburg was in Fort Lauderdale as the pastor of St. Mark Catholic Church. Bishop Lynch is known for his time spent as the General Secretary of the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB). 13

SAINT CECILIA PARISH 3. Don t take offense at insults or be grieved by injuries others inflict on you. Of course, if John of Climacus is right about this step, it reveals how few of us are able to make this much progress in the spiritual life! But we are not left to our own devices here. According to Christian teaching, God is with us, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and so over time and with much grace such change is possible. Getting Rid of Anger: A Christian Approach Jesus is described in the gospels as being meek, gentle, and humble. But this doesn t mean he was weak. According to the New Testament, Jesus was blunt with the Pharisees and he turned over the tables in the temple. He was not a pushover. What these traits point to, in part, is the fact that Jesus had no unrighteous anger. Just as Jesus did, his followers are to endure wrongs humbly and patiently and...let go of our anger, which is the fruit of pride (p. 63). What can we do to become more like him in these ways? St. John of Climacus offers practical advice about how we can rid ourselves of anger. Here are 3 steps we can take to rid ourselves of unrighteous anger: 1. Keep our mouths shut even when our hearts are stirred up with anger. This is a beginning, a way to start taking back territory in our hearts that we ve given over to anger. It is also a way to keep our anger from harming others. When we lash out in anger, the words we utter can often do serious damage. 2. Silence the thoughts that cause our anger to fester. Many of us tend to dwell on situations, events, circumstances, or people that make us angry. But this feeds anger, when we should be starving it. We must seek to let our anger go (Ephesians 4:26). We can choose what our minds dwell on, it is one of our greatest freedoms as human beings. We can undermine anger by wisely choosing where to place our focus. There are other things we can do as we seek to rid ourselves of anger. Developing patience is one remedy. Anger can be thought of as one of the many fruits of the vice of pride. And if pride is the ultimate cause of anger, then cultivating humility will be helpful as well. I think most of us have more anger in our hearts than we care to admit. Hopefully, this advice from John of Climacus will be helpful as we seek to rid ourselves of this destructive force in our lives. Michael W. Experiencing the loss of someone who has been important in our life is never an easy process and remains unique to each individual. Each grief educational series and support group is an opportunity for you to share your feelings (only if you wish), learn about the grieving process and be a support to others who are sharing your experience of losing a loved one. A new series, Coping with Grief and Loss, will begin September 13 (10:00-11:30 a.m.) and run for 7 consecutive Tuesdays. Also, a holiday workshop, Coping with Grief and the Holidays, is scheduled for November 8 (10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.). Registration is required. Let us hear the cry of the victims and those suffering, no family without a home, no child without a childhood. Outreach to Expecting Parents One of the discussion topics that got a lot of interest in our meeting was how to reach out to, include, and support expecting parents of St. C's. The group thought it would be fantastic to help expecting parents connect with each other and with parents and parishioners who have been there or simply care. So please Sarah at sarahelliottgoodale@gmail.com if: 1) You are (or hope to become) an expecting parent and are interested in connecting with others 2) You are a parent, grandparent, or friendly parishioner interested in connecting with and supporting expecting parents and those with new babies (through meal trains, visits, support groups, or in any other ways). Student's Prayer Christ our Teacher, You dwell deep within each of our students; In those who struggle academically, And in those who excel; In those who seek attention by acting out, and in those who remain silent and try to hide from notice; In those surrounded by friends, And in those feeling lonely; Give us the grace to know your presence in each of them and to respond to their needs as you would to ours.
