Own us as Thy children in time and eternity. Amen ~ James Martineau, A.D. The Fifth Sunday in Lent April 2, :00 A.M. & 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. Lazarus, come out! Jesus calls Lazarus out of his grave and commands that he be unwrapped and freed. So has Jesus also freed us from the bonds of our guilt and sin through His forgiving, liberating Word. By this same Word, He teaches us to pray for our deliverance from temptation and evil in the final petitions of the Lord s Prayer. His ears (and so His heart!) are always open to the prayer and plight of you, His beloved family.

As We Prepare to Proclaim the Saving Acts of Christ One week from today, Zion joins with Christians across the church in the largest mass gathering ever seen in the world: Holy Week, held in a hundred thousand places, yet celebrate by one Church around one Altar, the throne of our Lord Jesus Christ. Together, by our worship, we proclaim, Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. To help us reflect on what we now prepare to do: We have no purpose of our own His will must be our peace His command must be our surrender We are as the clay which He uses to accomplish the work of His eternal pity in the sin-torn hearts of the world Nothing less than that will do We are to preach Christ and Him crucified in season and out of season... and the preaching of the Cross has never been popular and will never be popular We are to be and remain clay in the hands of the saving Christ clay which must wait for eternity before it is transformed into a Christ-given glory and power We do not have an easy road in this ministry but we do have a Christ-guided road And what is the reward?... What will we get out of it?... When the pitiless light of eternity falls upon us and our work, let us hope and pray that we will still be clay in the hands of the living Christ but clay now which bears upon it, body and soul, the blessed and eternal marks of the Lord Jesus. ~ O.P. We are ever learning to orient our lives between the font and altar and to mark our path with the songs and faith of the heavenly Zion. And I answered, O Lord GOD, you know. 4 Then he said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. The Law, the whole Law without subtraction or compromise, determined [Jesus ] existence. And He solemnly declared that every man s place in the kingdom of heaven would depend on how seriously he took the Law, on how he obeyed it and how he taught it. How does a man take it seriously?.... EPISTLE Romans 8:1-11 1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. 9 VERSE GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 11th chapter. 1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, he whom you love is ill. 4 But when Jesus heard it he said, This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, Let us go to Judea again. 8 The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again? 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. 11 After saying these things, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him. 12 The disciples said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover. 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his The full and explicit answer to that question could be given only on the far side of the cross and the resurrection, as Paul was to give it: God has done what the Law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin [that is, as a sin offering], He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the just requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us (Rom. 8:3,4). ~ Pr. 10 death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him. 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you. 23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again. 24 Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? 27 She said to him, Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world. 28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, The Teacher is here and is calling for you. 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying? 38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead 10

And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me. 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out. 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. 45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him. P: The Gospel of the Lord. APOSTLES CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 12 God wants us to pray to him for everything that attacks even our bodily welfare so that we seek and expect help from no one but him. But he has placed this petition at the end, for if we are to be protected and delivered from all evil, his name must first be hallowed in us, his kingdom come among us, and his will be done. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory. P: What is the seventh petition of the Lord s Prayer? C: But deliver us from evil. P: What does this mean? C: We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven. 16 AGNUS DEI ( Lamb of God ) The phrase for you evokes faith. Yes, for me too. Amen, we say, as Jesus gives into us His body and His blood. Those to whom our Lord gives His body and blood can pray, Judge me, O God. If He tosses you out, He is tossing out the body and blood of His Son and He cannot do that. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy. 16
