1 A Prayer Upon Entering Church Lord God, heavenly Father, bless the Word which passes between preachers and hearers this day. Accept the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs offered as praise. Give ear to the prayers spoken at altars in every place. Sanctify all the gifts placed at Your feet. Strengthen all who feast at Your table; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen The Feast of the Reformation October 30, :00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. Holy Scripture tells us to remember those who spoke the Word of God to you (Hebrews 13:7). By remembering them, we remember how God worked through them for the sake of His Church. On this day, we remember the reformers of the 1500s, led by Martin Luther, whose preaching freed the Church not to trust in itself but in Christ crucified alone. These reformers, by God s own grace, are some of our fathers in the faith whom we are called to honor and respect.

Screwtape explains to Wormwood different ways to keep a man from being Christian. He refers to the man as the patient. My dear Wormwood... Be sure that the patient remains completely fixated on politics. Arguments, political gossip, and obsessing on the faults of people they have never met serves as an excellent distraction from advancing in personal virtue, character, and the things the patient can control. Make sure to keep the patient in a constant state of angst, frustration and general disdain towards the rest of the human race in order to avoid any kind of charity or inner peace from further developing. Ensure that the patient continues to believe that the problem is out there in the broken system rather than recognizing there is a problem with himself. Keep up the good work! Today s liturgy follows the pattern of the German Mass published by Martin Luther in 1526 A.D. and includes the hymns that he composed or used in that service. This German Mass was one of the first Western Christian services composed in the every day language of the people. 3

Keep us steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort us in all temptations, defend us against all our enemies, and bestow on the Church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 6 PSALM 46 God Is Our Refuge and Strength Behnke Choir: Antiphon God is our refuge and our strength, our only help in trouble. Psalm 46 is the psalm on which Luther based the hymn, A Might Fortress, generally recognized today as the hymn of the Reformation. Choir: We will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountain fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. C: Antiphon Choir: Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. C: Antiphon Choir: He makes wars cease He breaks the bow and burns the shields with fire. Be still, be still, be still and know that I am God. The Lord Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress. 6

SECOND LESSON Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. L: The Word of the Lord. This is not a drink for drunkenness that would cut off even meaningful speech. This does not cause us to babble. It does not disturb our vision. Here it is: Learn to sing psalms! 15 The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
