1 A Prayer Upon Entering Church: O Lord, heavenly Father, in whom is the fullness of light and wisdom, enlighten our minds by your Holy Spirit, and give us grace to receive your Word with reverence and humility, without which no one can understand your truth. For Christ s sake. Amen. ~John Calvin, 16th Century A.D. The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 25, :00 and 11:00 A.M. Welcome to the Lord s Day. As Pr. Gulhaugen preaches his final sermon as a called pastor, we encounter a strange gospel: a rich man, a prince among his peers, suffers torment after he dies. He cries out to heaven for help won t someone please warn his brothers to live a better life than he did? God has a better idea: His Son, rising from the dead. In Him, our Lord Jesus Christ, the guilt of the world s sin is washed away, and sinners find themselves redeemed! Here is the message that the Church and her ministers preach, and for which we give thanks today and every day.

When our pastors speak, God works through them to work His gracious mysteries among us. They become the conduit through which the Father speaks, the Son fulfills all righteousness, and the Spirit hovers over the baptismal waters. Amen EPISTLE 1 Timothy 3:1-13 1The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not doubletongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please stand....what are they of themselves? Nothing different from us: weak, sinful, and in need of the same message they deliver to us. But we should not see them in their own person, for if we did, we would never heed them. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s side. APOSTLES CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Please be seated. 14 To obtain (justifying faith) God instituted the office of the ministry, that is, provided the Gospel and the sacraments. Through these, as through means, He gives the Holy Spirit, who works faith, when and where He pleases, in those who hear the Gospel. 16 The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing. O Lord, in this simple meal you have satisfied our ancient need. Bless as well the daily bread you give us to share that those you bring within our reach may through refreshment have a sign of grace. You are Lord forevermore. Amen. Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tremendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation. The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
