Poag-Ray was reappointed as Pastor of Wayman Good Hope for the Conference year at the 68th Session of the Washington Annual Conference. The Conference was held April at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church in Glenn Dale, Maryland. First Gentleman F. Chester Ray was elected President of the Washington Conference Minister s Spouses, Widows, Widowers + PK s organization. Bro. Sherman Watts and Bro. Michael Swett served as the Delegate and Alternate Delegate for Wayman. Missionaries attended the Annual Missionary Society Luncheon on April 10 (see the following article). Several Wayman members attended the Ordination and Communion Service on April 13 during which Rev. Elisa Evans, Wayman s Director Youth & Young Adult Ministries, was ordained an Itinerant Elder. As a new Itinerant Elder, Rev. Evans preached for Wayman the first Sunday after the Conference. We welcome back Pastor Poag-Ray and First Gentleman F. Chester Ray and look forward to a blessed year. Braxton, First Lady, Potomac District Washington Conference. Her theme was What Are You Doing to Leave for Your Legacy? Later we held elections for our Missionary Delegates and Alternates. During our Lunch the guest speaker was The Honorable Dorothy Rev Elisa Evans preaches her first sermon as an Itinerant Elder Bailey, Former Prince George s County Council Woman. Her theme was Only the Work We Do for Christ will Last. The Night in White was held at Reid Temple A M E Church in Glenn Dale Maryland. The service began with music by the Greater Mt. Nebo Mass Choir, and Liturgical Dancers. Following the Praise and Worship Service, the Capping and Pinning Ceremony of 113 Missionary and Associate Members were presented to the 68 th Session of the Washington Annual Conference. The Messenger for the evening service was Mrs. Vivienne L. Anderson, Former Episcopal Supervisor, Retired. Mrs. Anderson s theme was A New Theology for a New Reality -Wonder Working Power. 2 THE RESURRECTION SEASON The Resurrection Season reminds me of how loyal and committed Jesus was to God, His Father. Jesus came to this sinful world to sacrifice His life for mankind, knowing that His own would reject Him (John 1:11). Yet, He stayed focused on the mission. He never deviated from His Father s will, even when He was being misunderstood, ridiculed, abused, mocked, scandalized and tortured. He stayed the course and secured the plan of salvation for all who would believe in Him. What about you? Can God depend on you to be faithful to His mission? Can He depend on you? To be the salt and light of the earth To tell others about His love To give someone an encouraging word To be a reflection of Him when being mistreated To be an agent of change in the world To fight the good fight of faith To live a life of integrity To treat others with kindness and respect To give others a helping hand To be a person of excellence To lift up His name in praise and worship To be an example of love To give from a generous heart To be slow to speak and never gossip To walk according to His will for your life To live a disciplined life To live a joy-filled life To live a faith-filled life To grow in grace and knowledge of His will To keep a positive attitude even in a negative environment To appreciate life and those in your circle of influence To be a good steward of time, money and relationships To live a moral life, one that glorifies God To think on things that are pure, just, honest and lovely To live a renewed life? Question to ponder... Has the resurrection impacted my life? Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 Scriptural Thought for the Conference Year Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. NEWS FROM THE COMMISSION ON HEALTH SIS. SYLVIA NOLAN, CHAIRPERSON LYME DISEASE Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Anne Arundel County, as well as in Maryland and the United States.

The County had 178 cases of Lyme disease in 2016, 107 cases in 2015, 115 cases in 2014, 96 cases in 2013 and 110 cases in 2012. How is it spread?

Only about 65 percent of confirmed cases noticed a tick before they became ill. The tick needs to be on a person for at least 24 hours before the person becomes infected.

SYLVIA NOLAN, CHAIRPERSON LYME DISEASE Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Anne Arundel County, as well as in Maryland and the United States. Cases of Lyme disease are found throughout the County and are not concentrated in any particular area. The County had 178 cases of Lyme disease in 2016, 107 cases in 2015, 115 cases in 2014, 96 cases in 2013 and 110 cases in How is it spread? Lyme disease is spread to people from a tiny tick the size of a pinhead known as a blacklegged or deer tick. The tick is hard to see because it is so small. Only about 65 percent of confirmed cases noticed a tick before they became ill. The tick needs to be on a person for at least 24 hours before the person becomes infected. These ticks are most often found from May through October in tall grass, brush and wooded areas. But they can be present, in smaller numbers, throughout the year. Pets can bring ticks into the house. Mice also carry ticks. What are the symptoms? Symptoms usually start within a month of being infected. About 75 percent of patients with early Lyme disease will have a skin lesion in the first one to four weeks of infection. Some get a bull s eye rash that has a red center. Other early symptoms may include fever, joint and muscle pains, headache, or feeling tired. Lyme disease is hard to diagnose because the symptoms often mimic other diseases. Special laboratory tests may be needed to make a diagnosis. If left untreated, the infection can lead to serious illnesses of the heart, joints and nervous system. Lyme disease may cause birth defects or miscarriages. How can it be prevented? Wear light-colored, long sleeved shirts and pants that you can tuck into your socks when working or walking in areas likely to have ticks. Spray arms and legs with an insect repellent containing DEET (up to 30% for adults, 10% for children) or picaridin. For occasional exposure, adults can spray clothing with an insecticide, permethrin, for more protection. Use repellents and insecticides as directed by the manufacturer. Follow your doctor s advice for extended use or for use on children, during pregnancy or if you have skin problems. It is very important that parents conduct a thorough inspection of children. Look along the hairline, in the hair and ears, and where clothing fits snugly. Because ticks can spread other serious illnesses, a whole body inspection every three to four hours is safest when in grassy or wooded areas. After coming indoors, wash and dry clothes as soon as possible, preferably at a hot temperature. Wash off insect repellent remaining on the skin. Remove leaves, brush and tall grass around houses, pathways and gardens. Treat and discourage infestations of mice in or near houses. If you find a tick Remove the tick right away, but do not touch it with your bare hands. Use tweezers to grip the tick behind its head and as close to the skin as you can. Gently pull it off. If tweezers are not available, use your fingers wearing gloves or a tissue. Do not smash or burn the tick. Tick Removal.Tick Identification is available through the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA). See the Tick Identification Instructions and Form. After removing the tick, wash your hands with soap and water or waterless alcohol-based hand rub. Clean the tick bite with an antiseptic such as iodine scrub, rubbing alcohol, or soap and water. Mark a calendar on the date you found the tick and watch for symptoms for at least a month. If a rash develops or you experience other symptoms within 3 to 32 days, call your physician immediately. Howard preached from Isaiah 40 :31:1 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.. GETTING TO KNOW WAYMAN S OFFICERS Bro. Earl Barry White, Steward Barry has been a lifelong member of Wayman. As a child he attended Sunday school and participated in many activities and programs.

Although he was not normally a lead singer, he does recall that he and his brother, Alvin, used to sing a duet of God is Not dead, He is Still Alive.

His great grandmother s family, the wife of Theophilus White, migrated from Madison County, Virginia to the Jones area of Anne Arundel County sometime before 1870.

7 GETTING TO KNOW WAYMAN S OFFICERS Bro. Earl Barry White, Steward Barry has been a lifelong member of Wayman. As a child he attended Sunday school and participated in many activities and programs. He sang in the youth choir and even sang with the Male Chorus for a time. Although he was not normally a lead singer, he does recall that he and his brother, Alvin, used to sing a duet of God is Not dead, He is Still Alive. In fact, they still sing it when the two of them get together. Barry s family roots extend back to the days when Wayman Good Hope was known as Baldwin. His great grandmother s family, the wife of Theophilus White, migrated from Madison County, Virginia to the Jones area of Anne Arundel County sometime before In the Jones community, they lived near the Cyrus Joyce and R Warring families. Most of the ancestors from the White family from those years are buried in Carpenter Hill Cemetery so they had a connection with Wayman. Barry has been a steward on and off since 1973 or 74 when he was appointed by Rev J L Young. When he was younger, his role as a steward was mainly counting the money collected on Sunday mornings. In more recent years, the role of a steward has transitioned to include being spiritual leaders as well. Reflecting on his younger years as a steward, he wishes he had taken advantage of the spiritual mentoring offered by the older, more seasoned stewards. He feels the biggest challenge for the stewards is to keep the Church vibrant and try to keep more young people in the church. He would encourage people to become more involved so there is a good team of people with different skills to help the Church. Barry has been married to his wife Penelope for 32 years. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. He retired as a civilian servant from the Naval Surface Warfare Center. One of his hobbies is studying history and tracing his family and community roots. Last year he served on the Jones School reunion committee with Ed White. Bro. Michael Swett, Trustee Bro. Michael Swett grew up in Jones community. His mother was a Coates. Has been a member of Wayman as long as he can remember. He joined the U.S Army and served from He did basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and spent 14 months at Bamberg Germany. After being discharged from the Army he worked for U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the USPS in 2007 after 36 years. He and his wife, Joelle, will celebrate 24 years of marriage this year. They have 3 children. Mike is also known for his work preparing taxes. He has been doing taxes forever. Mike has been a trustee for three years. He enjoys serving the Lord and is thankful for the God s grace. Around Wayman he wears many hats He can be seen driving the Church van, cooking, and doing other work. He also serves as Assistant Treasurer, is on the Stewardship and Finance Commission, is Secretary for the Board of Trustees, and on the Board of Directors for Wayman s newly formed 501(c)(3) corporation.. His favorite scripture is the 23rd Psalm. FAREWELL TO REV. LINDA BANKS We bade farewell to Rev. Banks and her son, Zion, on April 29th. Rev. Banks came to Wayman in February 2016 as part of the internship program for candidates for ministry in the Washington Conference. While at Wayman, Rev. Banks served as Director of Christian Education, completed her studies with the Board of Examiners and was ordained an Itinerant Elder in the A..M.E. Church. We were blessed by her pleasant personality, generous spirit, and insightful sermons. We watched Zion grow and enjoyed having his energy and enthusiasm. Rev. Banks will be serving at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in Washington D.C. but she has promised that she will visit us occasionally. We pray God s blessings on them as they continue work in ministry at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church. Page 7
