Lesson Text: Hebrews 12:1-13 King James Version (KJV) Sunday, October 30, 2016 I. ENDURANCE IN THE RACE (Hebrews 12:1-3) 1. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. II. TRAINING FOR THE RACE (Hebrews 12:4-13) 4. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the

chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8. But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10. For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13. And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is

lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. New International Version (NIV) I. ENDURANCE IN THE RACE (Hebrews 12:1-3) 1. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2. fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. II. TRAINING FOR THE RACE (Hebrews 12:4-13) 4. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5. And have you completely forgotten this word of

encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, My son, do not make light of the Lord s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6. because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. 7. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.for what children are not disciplined by their father? 8. If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10. They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peacefor those who have been trained by it. 12. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13. Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not

be disabled, but rather healed. PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. We will do well in running the race God has set for us as long as we are not bogged down by sin or anything that interferes with whole hearted obedience to Him (Hebrews 12:1). 2. We can have spiritual success if we have our eyes fixed on Jesus and what He has accomplished (Hebrews 12:2; Acts 2:25). 3. Jesus is our example of how to endure hardships (Hebrews 12:3-4). 4. We should welcome the Lord s discipline as evidence of His love and concern for us in all our weaknesses (Hebrews 12:5-8). 5. We should admit that we were powerless to bring about our own salvation (Romans 5:6). 6. Christ s death for sinners makes all other sacrificial acts

by people pale in comparison (Romans 5:7-8). 7. If we respect our earthly fathers who don t have all knowledge, we should respect our Heavenly Father even more (Hebrews 12:9-10). 8. Hardships and difficulties produce fruit in our lives and make us stronger (Hebrews 12:11). 9. The church should encourage those in the spiritual race who grow tired, and Christians should live in such a way that weaker believers will not fall into sin (Hebrews 12:12-13; I Corinthians 8:1-13). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
