1 THE TIDINGS Settle Memorial United Methodist Church 202 East Fourth Street Owensboro, Kentucky Church Office (270) Dedicated to Christ Committed to Serve Radio Broadcast -WKWC Sunday 11:00 A.M. Worship Service Podcast - website: Vol. 46 No. 1 January 2018 I enjoy the Christmas season. A focus on giving and sharing helps lift the true joy and peace of our Savior s birth. And who doesn t like receiving gifts? However, I rejoice a bit more than usual the week between Christmas Day and New Year s Day. For many years, I thought my pleasure arrived from the lack of busyness. The Christmas rush over and no special worship to plan or attend provided a break from the pressure of activity. To be honest the midnight walk* from the sanctuary to the parsonage following the last Christmas Eve Communion Worship is the most peaceful moment of my year. This peace comes in part because of the end of all the Christmas activity, but mostly because the presence of God in the world is never more real to me than at that sacred moment. God Immanuel present at the midnight hour. I appreciate all who made our Christmas season a sacred time. Diane and the adult choir practiced extra hours. Aimee and her crew worked patiently and faithfully to prepare the children s program. Many persons shared their musical talents, and many more persons gave their time to provide the needed support for worship throughout the season. The remarkable outreach ministries are too numerous to list. Thanks to all who had a part in our worship and our serving the world this Advent and Christmas season! The week between Christmas and New Year s Day also offers a time of quiet reflection on our life. What blessings need to be lifted in praise? What new thing or things do we need to take on? What old thing or things do we need to shed? Who needs our Christlike love? I hope you have celebrated well the birth of our Savior. And I hope you have reflected well as you prepare for a New Year. May 2018 be a blessed year for your family and your church! Your Servant in Christ, Keith *This year I will drive. Thanks for the wonderful parsonage. WEDNESDAY NIGHTS TOGETHER On January 10, we will begin a new semester of Wednesday Nights Together. Supper will be served from 5:00-5:45 (any donation) and classes will run from 5:45-6:45. SENIOR NEWS FROM PASTOR CAROL Isaiah 42:9 The Lord says, See the former things have taken place, and the new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to In the afterglow of Christmas and as we approach a New Year we become aware that the Lord has a future prepared for us. Christmas Spirit If we could keep the spirit of Christmas we hold dear, We d be a little kinder each day throughout the year. We d find the time to pause along our busy day To lend a hand to someone struggling on life s way. If we could keep the spirit that prompts our Christmas living, We d be tolerant with others, a little more forgiving. Fewer hearts would need be broken; More folk would wear a smile Not just because it s Christmas, each day would be worthwhile If we could keep the spirit of Christmas through the year, We truly then would honor the Savior we hold dear ~Kay Hoffman January Birthdays: 10-Clarence Reynolds; 16-Jane McKinney SETTLE S GOOD SAMARITAN FUND When someone comes to Settle Memorial in need of emergency assistance we turn to our Good Samaritan Fund.
